If you canonically place this in the Evil Dead lore, he shouldn't be surprised. He usually has something really tragic happen to him in the end. Just look at the alternative ending to Army of Darkness, otherwise known as Evil Dead 3.

@@synaesthesia2010 Actually, there's also a very pretty lady dog that COULD be Sam's new girlfriend. Mr. Purcell posted a drawing for Valentine's day with him, her and cupid Max. We don't know her name or if the picture is even an indication that it's canon other than Purcell drew it himself. It could just be the sake for the holiday and played as a joke. Edit: so uh...I looked around a bit more and as it turns out, nothing ever really stays canon in the Sam and Max universe. The closest to canon is Sam and Max's friend(relation)ship.

I like to think that Sam is secretly a romantic and loves weddings and such. It doesn't sound too far fetched since it's obvious he like nerd stuff (computers, he gets excited about getting an action figure from Claptrap, the trading cards...). He's also a doofy dork that's just too damn cute sometimes.
