**I am aware of my attention span and my focus in a long session and cash out when I start NOT thinking about a hand and stop really caring. That's when I get way too loose and my opening and calling ranges open way up. (no bueno) **I also leave in those sessions when I keep getting "rivered" or none of my draws come in, but ALL of my opponents' draws come in. (demoralizing) ** In addition, when I KNOW a couple of better players sit, I will get up and look for "softer" players at other tables. (Down here at 2/5, 1/3...It's not difficult to find a better table).

No, I usually quit too late. That said, twice over the last week, I decided to quit just before the next BB got to me, and on literally the last hand I caught AA and doubled🤣 But I made a very good decision to quit under the following circumstance: I had lost about 4 buy-ins at what I perceived to be a soft cash game getting coolered and sucked out (and let’s face it, I made some mistakes too)-I made my 5th buy-in and requested seat change to be left of a player I thought was splashy and loose and had been killing me and had a huge stack, and as I sat down with the 5th buy-in, he got up and left. I wasn’t super pissed after losing 4 buy-ins, but I *was* reallly ticked off he left with my $$ just as I sat down-so I vented at him, collected my re-buy and cashed out and left. I was tilted at that moment and the table just got less soft and lower $$.

I never loose my bankroll because I watched your videos and I stick to your advice when I get to 25 or 30 buy ins of a previous stake I move down and build it back up then I try again and again and again and my time will come sooner or later

Thank you for doing this video. I started playing in 2000 as a rec. I loved the game. It was a nice supplemental income. In 2008, when I lost my job, I decided to play for a living. I did well; more than I made working. However I began to lose my love for the game. It's a lot of stress. Every 18-21 year old at the time wanted to be a poker pro. I told them that if that's what they want, great; but be realistic about what it is to be a pro. If you think it's all about winning millions on TV, being on the cover of CardPlayer and hob-knobbing with celebs they are sorely mistaken. It's countless hours of grinding and stress. It's not for everyone. I gave it up after about a year and went back to playing recreationally.

It took some time for me to figure it out. I would go to Winstar to play & it just didn't feel right. I kept getting felted time & time again yet I wasn't playing bad. Then I noticed every raise I make the same 2 or 3 or 4 guys always called. They were all buddies from DFW. They sit there all day felting one new player after another playing them as a team.

Good video. My approach to quitting a session is mainly the first point: when the money I expect to win no longer justifies playing. I could rephrase it as- the risks I have to take to keep playing are no longer justified to try to win some more. Or at least thats how I feel. The game being abnormally tough- rarely applies When I expect to play poorly- yes, due to my feelings about risk, or due to tired When I am abnormally unhappy- yes, I ll usually quit then.

My rule online is 3 buy-ins on a cash game, 1 buy-in for a tournament; means i manage risk, limit losses and well, if i'm just drawing dead there's no point in flogging that horse, plenty more races tomorrow. Plus no late entries, just doesnt work for me, prefer getting a read on people and absorbing the play to get the best out of my game in the moment. Watching people in the last 5 minutes going buy-in, all-in, bust, buy in, all-in, bust, buy-in, all-in, bust is just crazy to me. These people are never at the final table.

I quit playing regularly because of the poker robots with headphones. Back in the old days people talked and had fun at the table with a majority rec players. We had game choices like low ball, stud, high low stud 8, Omaha, Omaha 8, condition pan, limit and no limit hold em. I find no limit ring games boring. So now I play the Wpt once per year for larger buy ins. Thanks Jonathan for all your friendly informative content.

@@colet911 I started playing poker in 1984. I’ve read the Bible of poker and about 40 other books including zen and the art of poker. I find no limit hold em boring and the players are generally introvert nerds that wear headphones (poker robots). In the old days most players were recreational and drinking, just there to let off some steam. I’m outgoing and like to have fun and don’t enjoy ring games anymore. I play h.o.r.s.e. at the Wpt once a year and I’m happy with that. Keep grinding Cole, sounds like money is a good motivator for you, but not for me.

Being ready to go for value, despite the risk of getting outkickered by an idiot that thinks he is bluffcatching, that is where the true skill in poker lies... everyone else is just the rest. This last weekend. I was playing live 1/2. I made a little over $900. Then a reg got seated at my table. This reg always tries stealing pots by raising big. Sometimes he has a premium hand. Sometimes it's junk. You never know. But it felt like he was targeting me specifically. Any time I'd raise or even flat call he bumped it way up. I know that if I stayed long enough I'd eventually be able to trap him. But idk how much of my profits I'd lose to get there. So I made the decision to just take my profit and go home after just a 3 hour session.

Play the games you can beat , but the games you can beat, don't pay your living cost... quit! I like to play tournaments ,to living in Boston I have to have a 30% ROI on $200 AVG buy-in and play 30/week , just to cover the living cost, so is better do something else like Uber to build back the Bankroll and studying mean while than grind lower stacks that doesn't cover my living cost.

When to quit a session? As soon as you think about leaving, leave. Too many times we think we play to our button or just another round and get sucked into bad situations. When your head is off the table, you should leave.

You have to listen closely to what he says. "not winning consistently, but in the long run". This is why I don't like the idea of $/hr because it's totally disingenuous. You don't make money consistently at a specific rate in poker. You average out over time a certain ROI which again to me is playing with the devil. Like seeing red hit 10 times in a row at a roulette wheel and saying black wins 50% of the time or a ROI of 50%. You may go broke before you reach your intended ROI.

Need a little help. I’m a newer player, been playing for about 8 months, tournaments only to get live reps and slowly try to grow a bankroll. 12 total tournaments, 5 final tables, made the money twice, bubbled (w/o pay) twice. I made the money on my 3rd tourney and my ROI shot up to 149%. Since then, I’ve been bleeding and my ROI is now down to about 13%. Haven’t touched my technical bankroll since that big win. Should I sit on my bankroll and play online micro stakes whenever I go to Vegas or keep at it? Average buy-in is $56. Currently have less than 2 buy-ins at this spot before I go in the red.

Has anyone noticed something doesn’t seem right with Americas Cardroom? I’m a winning player literally everywhere else I play but on there the craziest shit seems to happen. Use to play semi pro years ago and understand swings etc and needing to put in volume to over come down swings but something doesn’t seem right with ACR. It doesn’t matter how far ahead iam when I get all in I lose every time or some crazy cooler happens. Again I have been a profitable player for 20 years everywhere but ACR. Part of me wants to just quit playing ACR but options are limited for Americans as u know. I have stories forever just from the past month alone which no one wants to hear. Idk if it’s their RNG or what but something doesn’t seem right. I have felt this way about ACR for years. I almost feel like they know I will deposit money on there so I’m constantly targeted by their system to lose lol as crazy as it sounds. Got back on ACR last Month and I made a deep run in a $33 tourney and $10,000 for first place and I got out in 20th with AA all in pre vs A9 off which happens but ever since then crazy shit like that has not stopped. I understand this can happen to some degree but every game I play in tourneys, sit n gos or cash games from Holdem to Omaha etc a large majority of the time I get it in when I have the best hand I lose. I have even thought ok “what can I control” so I started doing pokercoaching and GTOWizard etc and didn’t find any crazy leaks or anything and found out I was playing well like I thought. It’s just constant torture lol. Luckily I’m not having this crazy shit happening constantly on these apps and elsewhere so it’s evening out but I’m honestly considering to stop playing on ACR. I have quit playing on ACR in the past too bc of this very problem. I’m experienced so I know this will happen to some degree etc (not a pro but you get what I’m saying). I’m a winning player on everything I have ever played but ACR. I Specialize in tourneys mostly but do very well in cash games elsewhere but on ACR I just can’t hold up or win or constantly get coolered so no momentum is gained ever on ACR. Has anyone noticed this about ACR?

While we all try to figure out whether that's a gambling problem or a marital problem. An old guy who was a regular at Foxwoods, had a wife in a wheelchair who would play slots for maybe 8 hours and then show up to try to get the guy to leave. He'd always say "one more orbit, then we can go" but she'd be waiting in the wheelchair for hours. One night, she falls asleep or passes out, falls out of the wheelchair and does a face plant on the floor. Floor people, security, and the EMTs are quickly there. They get her back in the wheelchair, have an oxygen mask on her, and she's reviving a bit. He never got out of his seat at the other end of the table. So, he yells across the table, "Are they taking you to the hospital, or can I keep playing?" Epilogue. She died about a year later. He was a bit down for a few months, then was happier than ever, able to play as long as he wanted. Then a couple of years later, he died, but the legendary stories about him lived on. One time he came running down the stairs into the poker room yelling "I'm even at poker now!" He had just hit for $125K at some stupid "poker" game (Caribbean Stud?) versus the casino. Everyone was happy to hear that his bankroll was healthy. He didn't move up in stakes, just was able to play more hours at his usual games, so it was a time-release capsule of money for everyone he played against.

In a casino (or large public card room) they don't factor in at all. Leave anytime you want, ask for a table change anytime you want, ask if a seat is available at other stakes/games anytime you want, ask for "meal reseating" anytime you want. Once the casino ships a pot to you, it is your money, no strings, you don't need to give anyone a chance to win it back. Find out their policy about whether a table change forces you to take your whole stack to the new table or not. Some places force you to, some force you not to, and treat it as starting a new session. Some give you the option to either, or something in between. If they force you to play the whole stack at the next table, you can get around that by going to a table at different stakes, which will likely require getting on the wait list if no seats are open. You can also ask how long you have to wait after cashing out, before buying back into the same game for just an initial buy in amount. Usually the answer is 30 or 60 minutes. I wouldn't rack up immediately just due to winning a huge pot against a belligerent person, but I wouldn't feel obligated to give anyone a chance to get it back, and I wouldn't let it change my plans to go to dinner or leave when I'd originally planned, or sooner. Playing one more orbit (very tightly if you wish) plus waiting for the blinds to reach you, has never caused a problem. Even just picking up when the blinds reach you is almost always difficult for anyone to complain about beyond a joking comment about doing a hit and run. If you've been playing a couple of hours, nobody thinks much of someone leaving, even if they are winning big. If concerned that someone will get bent out of shape, you can ask the dealer or floor how long you can leave the table for a meal, then say you'd probably need longer than that, and ask what their rules are about reseating you after a meal. Usually the answer is you get up to 90 minutes or 2 hours to return, you don't usually even have the choice to come back to the same table, much less an obligation to. They usually just put you 2nd on the waitlist for the next seat at any table for the same stakes, if you return. Cash out at the cage and go, whether to leave, or to eat and return, or to eat and leave. At a home game, it can be touchier if the game is shady or you are friends with the host. That's why I never play home games except truly for socializing with old friends, coworkers, or whatever. Because I'm a poker shark and my friends and coworkers are not, any home game I'm in is invariably at much lower stakes and in softer games than I routinely play in casinos.

Trust me. There is a ton of skill involved. Luck does play a part. But if you have the skills you can make a profit despite bad luck. I can't win on the slots or blackjack if my life depended on it. I have terrible luck when it comes to gambling. But I'm able to win at the poker table more often than I lose.

Realizing when to quit is a very mature thing to do. However, to win at poker (online tournaments at least) you need to play 2500-3000 tournaments per year. Expecting to win with less is an overestimation of skill and underestimation of luck. ;) I personally played 6K MTTs last year and made decent money, but I've had days, weeks of bad runs. So, yeah, you are right and wrong at the same time: without a massive volume it's more "luck", with a massive volume it's more "skill".

@PandaPoker is totally correct. I think a lot of people hope to turn on the computer once a week and bink a massive tournament. That just isn’t realistic. In the long run it is categorically skill based, if you’re a good player and have an edge on the fields you play in you will make money. But you need to play thousands and thousands of tournaments to even out the “luck.” Good bankroll management and controlling your mental game is crucial
