That's the jist of it, we spend our money on the cards and every dollar we have to spend on quality of life is less money we have to spend on Pokemon, buy the cheapest storage you can at Ikea to make due. I still need to buy a new desk and plan to upgrade my audio and video in the future. Even go hunting for binders in Value Villages to get binders for 69 cents instead of paying 13$ for a package of 4 new.

Hey Pokesoup- I wanted to give you an update with my PSA order. They are reviewing 2 of the lower graded cards and then depending on the grade change difference if they regrade it the rest of the order will be reviewed. Basically if one of the 5's is evaluated as an 8 or higher which I believed it should be then they will look at the whole order. I had to call about 3 times to get to this point but they are working with me for now

Values constantly fluctuate, so Its hard to keep an accurate estimated value. But I do try and keep a spreadsheet updated a couple times a year.

I really like your collection Soup i'm happy for you to have these cards i really want them too my biggest goals are to have the Charizard goldstar card mint in german (because i'm from germany), blaine's charizard because of the very very cool artwork, rocket's charizard because of the cool artwork too (in holo of course), scizor from aquapolis in holo (because i love scizor) erica's venusaur because of the cool artwork and to have the 3 canto-starters and their evolution-lines completed from the base set. I know that's a lot and it's even more money if i want them in completely mint but it's a very big goal for me and i will keep fighting for that goal. Someday i will have all these cards in my collection and i don't have to dream about them anymore. :-) But i need to wait a couple of years because i'm only 14 and my parents would not allow me to buy cards for 1000€+ because they don't understand the meaning and the worth of old cards and the spirit of collecting. But when i'm like 20 and make my own money and live allone i will start raising money for my goal. I will fight ;-) Keep on going Pokésoup you earned already the goal (and lots of more) that i'm dreaming for and i'm happy for you thumbs up 👍🏻👍🏻

I’ve seen a few but why don’t people grade their cards with beckett?

Beckett has a different grading approach. With .5 grades, getting a 10 is harder with beckett. If you don't manage to get a perfect 10 with beckett, a 9.5 is worth less than a PSA 10 in most cases. Some people also just like PSA cases better. Its really up to preference.

I'm not an expert, but i think no one does it because no one does it. PSA is more reputable and popular with youtubers and such so people pick that. Also there are services like ludkins that use psa so its easy to do. I don't know how psa got ahead of Beckett in the first place but obviously they surpassed beckett by a longshot in the popularity contest. ;)

Are the cases in plastic? 🤔 I've never seen that before. I don't think at least. The only other person I watch get PSA graded cards is Rhymestyle. Is the plastic something you can request?

Can ANYONE at all explain to me the appeal of the PSA market? Why does it exist when 1) The barrier to entry is an insane 1000% mark up (not to mention the permanent increase in price base due to psa peeps trying to scoop them up and double/triple their money) 2) An increase to the physical space needed for your collection anywhere from 10 to 100 fold compared to even nice modern side loading binders. 3) And the fact that is spaces out your cards from one another to such a drastic, disorganized degree. I don't see those factors being beaten by and arbitrary graded value in a hard plastic case so that your cards are all slightly closer to perfect. Especially considering that realistically the 10s and even 9s floating around are maybe 1/3 actual 9s and 10s respectively due to psa graders just not caring/letting cards slip/generally being inconsistent.

Ive tried to wrap my head around some of your points, but I'll give it a shot. 1) The cost mark up is based on rarity of the card graded. 1000%? Not sure what you're looking at. The market value for NM raw cards is approaching the value of a PSA graded card (depending on what card). Thats a whole separate issue. 2) Physical space required, each person can deal with this however they want. Doesn't bother me. Id gladly make more room for high value cards that are well protected. 3) I dont understand this point at all. Sorry I grade cards to mainly PROTECT THEM from myself. I also grade cards that have value/potential value so there is a grade to go by, or I grade cards because I like them, and want them protected or I want to work on a collection goal (all 9s or all 10s etc). Its true that there are strong/weak 9's and 10's etc. Its not a perfect system. Smpratte has covered this topic very well, I recommend watching some of his videos.

Considering I'm a hard ass about psa cards in most of my comments, I can respect the respect you've given me. I still greatly disagree with most of it, but I can see some of your points I suppose. I disagree with 1) though. I'm arguing that the 1000% mark up has been informed over the years by the obsessive amount of rare cards getting psa graded: You have both extremes on the market now and pretty much forever onward where things like bare gold star prices are informed on what the PSA versions have sold for and so the barrier to entry has a ceiling x3 higher that it otherwise would have been. And then because of those extreme examples, the other form the PSA beast takes is people not only grading literally everything, but then asking the same kind of 100s of dollars mark up on things like arbitrary reverse rare holos from the past no one really cares about. That's the 1000% mark up I meant. All because of what people ask online to sell them and the higher end nonsense. Here's my issue: It's similar to buying repacks online: The ratio to which you risk losing money is so much astronomically higher than buying normal packs because of the double fold on profit engines: You have the profit engine of the company which actually made the cards to make money from their time and effort now ON TOP OF this other random third party that wants to make money off of their time and effort as well. The same thing happens with PSA graded cards only there's also now a third profit engine behind the price tag as well now: PSA itself as another middle man between the actual collector and the card itself. And people have just gotten more and more greedy with their asking prices on PSA stuff over the years because of that while also including this inflated sense of value on their time to get it in that arbitrary case. It's partially the markets fault for buying them, but it's like... there is this massive deficit of sense both the selling and buying arena. p.s. 3) simply means that it makes it very hard to incorporate your collection into any kind of meaningful organization as having cards in psa cases makes their stand alone nature that much more inherent rather than if you were to put them into a book with other cards. The default of psa cards being stacked and rowed.
