Without more knowledge on the lesson contents, I'd say - sadly - it's a good idea. So long as no militaristic procedures are drilled, like - I don't know, marching, saluting, mandatory nationalistic songs or oaths, and as long as the targets are abstract (not man-shaped, not associated with any particular country). Unfortunately, recent history has shown that a populace with some knowledge of armed conflict may be a good thing to have. I hope that for all of these kids it remains a sport.

Poland some decades back had basic self-defense classes called "przysposobienie obronne". They taught basic skills like first aid, how to use a gas mask, and in some cases students tried their skills at a shooting range. Naturally, safety was the priority. They were cancelled in 2012. It's not a new concept to us.

I don't think they actually mean for primary school children to defend Poland lol. I think the meaning was that starting in Primary School children learn the basics of firearms usage. @@Soulessdeeds Oh I know, I was being faceticious. It is a bit disturbing though, as the idea of training kids in how to shoot is a step away from utilising child soldiers. The war in Ukraine may get worse, it may spread to Poland but children should not be anyones first consideration when it comes to 'how do we defend ourselves?', even as a joke. The important thing is the culture surrounding guns, not whether ppl have, like, or know how to use them. There's a certain large country in the world infamous for its gun problems, but the problem is really the culture surrounding them, not the guns themselves. If guns are seen as a normal solution to a disagreement instead of an absolute last resort, that is when problems arise. If gun culture makes clear that they are strictly for hunting, sport, and only against humans as last resort for serious threats like war then it can be okay. As long as these kids understand that a gun is a weapon not just a tool or toy, Poland will be okay..I hope.

My high-school had a gun range. They discontinued the class about 20 years before I got there, but the range was still there, just being used as storage. Talking to my dad, who had gone through the same school, it was rated for .38 special but they just used .22lr. When I went through, they tried to start an archery team, but only 2 students were interested after finding out how regulated the sport was. Most of us wanted to use longbow or recurve and a handful who went bowhunting felt the regulation bows were too light, slow to react and poorly sighted.

@whitewarrior7215 then you are not paying attention. You might dislike Putin all you want. But right now NATO is attacking Russia. Russia has not attacked NATO. Ukraine was called the most corrupt nation by the US State Department, but politicians are heavily involved in that country. Since the fall of the Soviet Union NATO has grown, even if it was supposed not to. They have not fulfilled their part ever. It is an offensive force.

Depends. Are they going to live in a place where guns are a fact of life? If so, it's better to educate people about them in a safe and controlled manner than to pretend they don't exist.

There are pros and cons to this, but with the limited context I have, it seems like the pros outweigh the cons. And you can't argue that it isn't a smart move for Poland to make. The simple fact of the matter is that they legitimately are at risk of being invaded in the near future. Familiarity with guns is something their citizens need to have. It's sad, but it's true.

What a crazy thing to do. If you want to prepare for war, do as finland and make conscription for the army mandatory. Dont do this to kids, only thrid world countries do this and odcourse americans, which is kinda the same 😂

Conscripts army is ineffective. You can't force someone to fight against his will in 21st century. That's what is happening in my country now. Up to 200 000 deserters. And we had those military classes at school, in USSR it was common practice

Great idea! Isn't it better to know and learn how to handle them properly? In US schools, they used to do that and some have courses and school clubs. Great stress reliever and maybe kids can release their frustrations in a controlled manner. Learn responsibility, too. Other countries have done the same. We should, also! The way the world is these days, it's best to be prepared.

Visiting a range is nothing new in Poland, many schools organized such visits (although not on a regular basis) long time before the war in the Ukraine.

I just did a guessing game looking at some of the children’s in the video:”have they died in the war?” I’m guessing the little boy 25% chance of dying in the war in the future. That little girl 0%-75% chance. I’m going to leave my words here and hopefully come back wrong in 10-20 years.

If you don't know, basic military training lessons were already in the schools of the USSR, when Putin himself was still in school) this was introduced after the Second World War, for the initial familiarization of high school students with weapons, gas masks, methods of survival in a critical situation and providing first aid to injured people in various situations.

GDP defense spending and civilian preparation levels mandatory in all members would generate both overwhelmingly effective NATO deterrence, and signal commitment of the same to its overstretched Transatlantic ally USA. Stop talking about deterrence, "poland" it.

Using a rifle isn't rocket science, this training would be over in a week or less when needed, not much deterrence if you ask me. Even with this training additional training with an actual gun would probably be required, so its mostly a waste of kids time.
