Nice video. I uses this style of rough polar alignment a lot. Its a great way of aligning on the sun or even the Moon in twilight when your finder scope can't detect stars to plate solve

Thanks! The little green piece of hardware is out of stock but I have a long enough dove tail adapter on my lens so I can mount the phone to it using the adapter.

Do you need to factor in the magnetic declination at your location when using this method? In my area, magnetic north is around 4 degrees west of true north. Is that enough to matter?
@JeliSpace9 ай бұрын
On the compass app I have you can click on an option that shows true north. I am 5 degrees off so similar to you. I would try to make it as accurate as you can, the adjustment after that should correct the difference but only offers so much room.

If you use your az adjustment knobs to center the sun instead of your slew controls does that not throw your entire polar align off?
@JeliSpace9 ай бұрын
The idea is to get it setup aiming as close to the pole as possible, then have it slew to the sun, at that point it should be very close. That is when you use the adjustment knobs to line it up the rest of the way at that point it should track fairly accurately. I really suggest practicing as much as possible on any sunny day that you can. I know I will be this weekend!

Does the sun burn your ZWO cam? or do you have a solar filter in there somewhere

There is what is called a white light filter on the front of the telescope otherwise yes the camera would be a crispy critter 😆

Hi, how would you make up for the fact that the telescope might not be facing forward exactly. For example, extreme case, let's say the tracker is completely polar aligned and the telescope is pointing to the east (so right). When we make it point to the Sun with your method, you will have to turn the tracker 90 degrees away from North and the tracker won't be polar aligned anymore. How do we take that into account? Does it not matter?
@JeliSpace6 ай бұрын
Pretty straightforward, on occasion you will send the slew command to recenter on the sun and the correct the image using your adjustment screws. Making adjustments made to recenter the image will correct those imperfections. That make sense?

What model is the SVBONY? SV503 80mm? I also have a SA GTi mount, and was looking for a scope with a longer focal length than my RedCat 51. (Yes, I know there is a quality difference there). How well is the mount handling the weight?
@JeliSpace9 ай бұрын
Yes correct it is the 503 which is a er doublet. So there's a little bit of blue fringe on starts but it's subtle and not to bad. Focal length is 560, with reducer 430. The mount handles it perfectly fine I'm right at the limit and 300 second exposure aren't an issue. You can see the picture I took of M45 and M31 not to long ago.
Dont have problems with metal and magnetic interference?

I'm not familiar with SkyWatcher GEMs. I have Orion, Celestron AVX, and ZWO AM5 mounts. Did you use Sidereal or Solar tracking mode when you did the goto for the Sun? Also, did you stay in Sidereal or change to Solar tracking? It never dawned on me to approximate PA and then use the adjusters to finish the alignment. I usually struggle with the buttons when trying to get a daytime GEM to track the sun.
@JeliSpace9 ай бұрын
I'm using Nina and a plug in called orbitals to slew to the sun when it sends that command it auto starts tracking at the rate that's appropriate for the target, including comets. So yeah solar but the telescope controller that Nina talks to is green swamp server and I can change the taking rate there as well. Either way I would setup any sunny day you can and practice.
@xro58419 ай бұрын
Like I would trust a phones GPS. But yeah I guess. Why not just use a compass?
@JeliSpace9 ай бұрын
Mostly everyone has a phone. Compass would work too as long as you had it stand off enough from the mount so the stepper motors didn't effect it. With the GTI and the phone mount it's far enough away, at least it was for me.

This is NOT a polar alignment. I can do the same rough "polar alignment" without any compass, bubble and analogic indicator.
@SSIGreenHeron9 ай бұрын
Why are you so negative and down on Jeli-Space? This is indeed polar alignment. You need a "bubble" to get a level mount. How will you know where north is without a compass? Lastly, what is an "analogic indicator"? I'm not sure you know what analogic means. Pointing a telescope at our nearest star is harder than it looks. So much of astrophotography is art and technique that there are usually no wrong answers. I thought his technique to quickly align a GEM to the sun was quite good. You obviously have spent a lot of money and time on this hobby judging by your photos and equipment. Don't be so negative towards others. BTW, how do you get your Coronado aligned for solar observing?
@MrMa19819 ай бұрын
@@SSIGreenHeron I'm not negative, is the usual disapointing video with no secret for a perfect daylight polar aligment. Maybe it's just impossible. Anyway anybody can align roughly a mount toward the north in daytime I dont think a video is necessary. Personally I have spots on the ground to put the tripod or I imagine polaris in the sky becouse I did thousands of time and often the align is good enough for short 60 seconds captures. Thank you for the nice words but I'm not so good. About the Coronado I need a monochrome camera badly. That's for sure.
@JeliSpace9 ай бұрын
There are those that haven't set up thousands of times and this is a once in a lifetime event for some. So if this video adds value to them, then that is who its really for. Sorry its not for you, but doing this the sun stays in sight for a very long time before needing intervention on my part. By all means though I welcome any tips and tricks that people can share, by far more helpful then saying you don't like it cause its similar to others. Cheers mate and I hope you both get to enjoy the experience coming up. Don't forget the lunar eclipse on the 25th!
@mark22209 ай бұрын
It absolutely IS a polar alignment, just as even you admitted, it's a rough one. Good even for subs of a second long and will keep them sun in the FOV for a half hour. What fucking perfect alignment are you needing? You gonna do 5 minute exposures of the eclipse?? Lmfao
@MrMa19819 ай бұрын
@@mark2220 You would laugh less if you need a pretty good polar alignment when you capture 1000 videos in 5 hours and process 1000 frames for a 5 hour timelapse of the Sun in H-alpha.
