I can’t decide if I want to rebuild mine or not. I bought a 99 scrambler 400 from the original owner. Still has original tires with hardly any wear. Very low hours and engine has tons of compression. It runs so perfect I hate to mess with it. People keep telling me the piston skirt will fly apart and ruin bottom end if I don’t change piston. But it’s all factory stock and I don’t plan on modding it beyond a pipe upgrade.

JohnnyRebKy hey there...if the compression is good don’t mess with it.....not sure the thinking that it’ll blow apart if you don’t change the slug.....one day it’ll need to be done but I don’t think that days here. I’d ride it and enjoy it. It’s more fun to use than tearing it apart and spending money you don’t have to right now . RESTORATIONS CREATIONS Thanks man. Supposedly they have a factory flaw and the factory piston is prone to breaking the piston skirt. They say when it happens it drops down and ruins the bottom end which is much more expensive to repair. The thinking most have is to replace with a weisco piston and avoid that from happening in the first place. I see lots of posts about it but very few saying it actually happened to them. I’m starting to think it’s more of a fishing tale the more it gets talked about the bigger it gets lol

It may be like a lot of scenarios on a production line where a part fails and it may have been due to a bad run of that certain part for let’s say 2000 units....it’s not to say it’ll happen or it won’t but a lot of it is fear tactics and some may be truth.....like I said if it’s not broken why bother and it’s even more true if you don’t try to kill the machine by riding it excessively hard. Skidoo/bombardier faced this major problem in 2007 when they released the new 800 r sled engine.....there was an issue with the cranks in them and they were blowing up like popcorn for the first 3 months. A change had to be made and all failed engine units were replaced. Does happen but fairly rare 😊

RESTORATIONS CREATIONS I think your right. It should have been a known issue by 1999 and some changes made. The 400 had been around since 95 I think.

Howdy. Double, triple ur engine life if you will simply ride it real EASY for a few minutes to allow water temp to equalizer and parts to expansion gradually. Tolerances are close; that is how I got educated, badly scuffed a piston gittin on it before it was warmed up.

Hi bro..great video..does it matter what ring goes on first ? and how do you know what side is up on the rings ?

Hey thanks. Usually start from bottom of the piston working your way up. Most rings are beveled to fit the ring slot and the top compression ring or all ring sets will have a dot at the ring gap showing which side is upward. Dot is up . Thanks again

When my 400 2 stroke scrambler idols it has a pecking sound is that normal some videos say its the clutch some say it needs a fresh top end Thoughts please

Do a compression test, ideally 120+ if it's below 115 rebuild.

So do i buy the rebuild kit 1st or take the cylinder to shop and let them decide what i need

michael miranda hi micheal....I’d take the jug in to your machinist first to see how bad off it is first.....gives them the time to mic it and check for cracks or too much wear.
