I know this is an old thread but seeing that turbo brought back memory's from when we raced back in 1983-1985. My parents owned Arizona Power Sports. We had a real genius of a mechanic, Ron Chasteen. He designed a turbo system that we used on 4 Polaris Indys. We mostly raced in Colorado and New Mexico. They were very fast and really not many sleds could come close to us. He then started Injection Research Services and designed a EFI system that he took to Polaris in '87 . After meeting with Polaris and Fugi , and showing his EFI system, Polaris said no thanks but came out with their system in '89. Ron took them to court and won around 57 million dollars. I don't know what happened to our original 4 race sleds but I'm always looking hoping a collector might have them. Those were some fun days racing.

I grew up around the Middlesex Power Marine Shop and Mike Mazur made these 600 / 650 Turbos fly... there is lots more to it than just bolting on a turbo and airbox and expecting it to have more power than a stock 650 carb and clutching setup.. this was OLD School Technology when comparing to todays 4 stroke and continued 2 stroke turbo applications

I had a 1996 Indy xcr 600 triple that I boosted and ran on 110 octane made 8psi i used 3 fuel pumps one for each carb. I had to take a special plate for the heads to hold them down. And ran 488 fan pistons. I’d send pics if I could but you tube won’t let me

Those turbo kits worked very good back in the day. Primitive but functional. For more HP you needed to lower the compression ratio pack more air into the engine. A good running 650 would go past the C note. The new 800/ 850 would have its hands full to outrun a 650.

@thatbigblock70074 жыл бұрын
Joe Blow dude why you will spend so much money on a sled that’s not worth over 1 grand, sell it and get like a xc 700 or 600 for the same power as the turbo 500
@GreatLakesLogger4 жыл бұрын
A 700 won't keep up to a properly turboed 500 for one thing. For another, it's the experience I'm after and as I don't ride a ton as far as trailriding goes, I have no excuse to go buy something like that. And btw, I paid 300 for it.
@thatbigblock70074 жыл бұрын
Joe Blow I doubt that honestly, you are stupid to even turbo a Indy 500 unless you have a shit ton of money and if you do do a turbo your going to have to run a lot of psi to even keep up with a xc 700, just jet, clutch your Indy 500 they are not made to be turbocharged they are reliable and cheap that’s what Polaris made them to be
@GreatLakesLogger4 жыл бұрын

Yes, it has been done many times over the years. If setup properly, the hp gains can be exponential. Very difficult to tune a carborated two-stroke though.
