Looks like Polaris has come a long way since I owned and rode them. I had 2 and quit buying them back in 2002 after having both be complete junk. We used to make bets on which Polaris would break down first on our rides back then. But looks like they sorted it out and make good stuff these days. Next time I buy I may give one a look

@khower Like most guys they have a dual-lever brake setup for rock. makes it alot easier. They both have 12" of ground clearance, the polaris is 1" wider and the new Visco-lok QE is night and day compared to the old one. 2012 is a whole new ball game.

I do know how it works. The Polaris AWD drive system is fully locking, and electrically engaged. With the switch in AWD, once the rear wheels spin more than 20% or 1/5 of 1 turn, and electrical signal to the front diff and magnets engage the locking mechanism. The reason you shouldn't drive with the AWD off, is your Hillard gear can become magnitized..which will cause your front diff to stay locked all the time (too hard to drive).

the fact is, they have a experienced company just to themselfs, just to make the top of the line motors

The problem with 14" wheels for Rock Crawling, is you now have 1" less tire for flex. You'd have to go to 28" tires, to get the same flex.

@khower try changing a side ways belt on the polaris, or changing clutches every 4000 miles, not to mention electrical problems and when riding 2 up you loose all ground clearance, i owned a 04 and 06 polaris and they were always breaking down. not to mention body roll and crap handling, smooth ride though lol

@khower Have you seen the new disco lok qe? it locks in less than a wheel turn. Most people have it lock in within a 1/4 turn the 850xp has to slip 5 lugs in the back before the front kicks in. Having the whole front end snap in breaks more stuff then one wheel lock in within a 1/4 turn. Jacobs magazine and ostacriuser find visco qe to be as good as the polaris system now

@khower 2009, first year of the 800R has a larger throttle body, mildly more aggressive cams, little more stock clutch, newere front diff, not as fast as the new qe visco lock but much faster than the 2007 and 2008 for sure

@zublacus14 жыл бұрын
CanAm is a nice ATV....no doubt. But....you want some advantages. 1) Locking Diff....the Visc Lok system sucks in comparison. Polaris is INSTANTLY, FULLY locking. 2) Towing capacity. CanAm is 1300, Polaris is 1900. 3) Suspension. Polaris is 1 in more in front and 1.25 inches in the rear. I'm not saying CanAm doesn't have advantages in other areas....I'm just pointing out 3 key reasons for Polaris.
@zublacus11 жыл бұрын
Kinda ironic statement....since 3 Polaris RZR's finished the 111 miles of King Of The Hammers. The top 6 that were still running, were all Polaris RZR's. Every Arctic Cat and every Can Am, broke and was out of the race. The winner of the Mint 400 was....Polaris RZR. Those are 2 of the most grueling and difficult off-road races in North America. Facts, not opinion.

@rocky2win It's a little hard to compare an ATV that didn't exist when it was filmed.
@zublacus16 жыл бұрын
No disrespect, but you don't understand how it works. The Polaris system has no effect on the motor or turning. When you turn the AWD switch on (which you should always leave on), ONLY the rear wheels turn. So normal operation, just the real wheels turn. However, if the rear wheels slip 1/5 of 1 turn or 20%, an electrical signal magnets in the front Diff, which cause the front to LOCK. All 4 wheels are now turning.
@RenelanderTV13 жыл бұрын
That's funny! I came in first place in the KL rock crawling/climing competition this summer.2nd,3rd,4th were also Can-Ams followed by Arctic-cat and Kawasaki. The best Polaris run was 12th place. So yeah, super good in the rocks. lol Polaris makes a very good quad I give them that, but it ain't no Can-Am. You can have the bragging rights to rock crawling. I give it to you. But i'll keep the Power, Handling, hp/lbs ratio, Kick-ass suspension and the best warranty. lol

@jetdr I just went rock crawling this weekend with a CanAm...the engine is AWESOME, but the visc-lock is horrible for rock crawling. It takes way too long to spool up, and when it does, it's not fully locked. Polaris locker in the front is far superior for rock crawling. The CanAm's are much better mudders, than crawlers.

Ok. You are completely wrong. Polaris was the first ATV to have a FULLY LOCKING differential. The switch is called AWD. It is instantly, fully locking front differential. Polaris doesn't have "limited slip" mode. CanAM has vis-lock...TOTALLY ineffective for Rock Crawling (What I do). Go buy one of the DVD's I'm in...Mountains and Mud II, III, IV or V.

Once again. Polaris is comparing their biggest ATV, against the biggest ATV that CanAm makes. Pretty simple concept. The visco-lok is that slow...I've heard they improved it in 2010, but yeah..it's that slow. I do agree....they should have compared the 850 to AC 1000...just to show the difference.

Here's some education my friend. BRP is a Canadian company. Rotax, is an OLD Austrian motor manufacturer. They have been around since the 20's. Rotax builds motors for BRP, and are owned by brp...they bought the company in the 70's. The point is....brp does NOT make the rotax motors. An Austrian company that has been making motors for nearly 100 years, makes the motors FOR brp. So the fact is...they bought them, just to have their motors. I love the motors,but brp doesn't make them.

First of all..I realize most people don't go rock crawling...just like everyone doesn't play in the mud. Secondly, I focus on the visco lock, because it's totally inadequate for my application or anyone who enjoys rock crawling. And to your other post...no I don't fix it after every ride...every other ride..jeez. ;) If you want to watch what I do...get Mountains and Mud 4 or Mountains and Mud 5..that just was released. i liked the 06-08 Sportsmans. i dont like the looks of the XP. i rode a 500 EFI Sportsman and a 450 carbonated Grizzly. one you get the 450 around 43 mph, it loses it. it GRADUALLY gets to 53-55. top. the Sportsman does 65 without breathing hard. and fer pulling, my Scrambler 500 ran outta gas and needed towed. we towed it with the Sportsman. i grabbed the brakes so it wouldnt pull just to mess around. it pulled it right up the driveway in 2x4. i dunno if the grizz would.

whats funny during the dyno on both the four wheeler is that it speedo says 0 mph now i dont care how they run the dyno if those back tires are turning like that the speedo WILL read the speed of which the tires are turning and in this video they are not..this video was just made to make the polaris look better but they couldnt exagerate too much because evrybody knows this thing will NEVER beat a can am..it would barely beat the sportsman 800

@bballplaya12367814 жыл бұрын
why dont they compare it to the outlander 800r xt that has power steering and newer engine, wuicker 4wd almost instant now, and lighter it would beat it in the 10 second run, the bumo steer would be lower and 4wd would be 1/5 a wheel turn

There's no way the Can Am would win any portion of that, EXCEPT the drag race. The Rotax engine is awesome, but the 4WD system is horrible. They've tried to fix it....but still it lags and sucks. You should really get informed before you type. cc is irrelevant. How much HP and torque does a motor have, is much more important. In 2008. the Polaris had 72 HP and the Can Am had 71 HP. Since both weigh 759lbs....guess what? Pretty much a tie. Polaris has since increased the throttle body size, which with the same "cc", has increased HP to 77hp.
