It is wonderful that these Very Early silent movies have been preserved and in such good condition.I am surprised that men like Charlie Chaplin were in good enough spirits at that time in our culture's development to sit down and write a script for a movie. People at that time had to work long hours to just to make a living . Most did not have hot and cold running water, electricity was only in the big cities, life was tough but they still had time to enjoy life.

This movie had it's very funny moments. Charlie ended up back in Europe after he was assosiated with the reds. The FBI waited till he went on vacation y 2 days later blocked his reentrance back into the USA. He settled down in Switzerland. His daughter Geraldine got an elite education in French y Spanish. To me his being blocked resulted in a blessing. They say he was a British Jewish man. Europe is ahead of the USA in various fields. I consider it to be a misfortune y curse to have been born as a US citizen. Charlie was a blessed man, athletic, y funny with heart..👍😊

Flicker Alley has a wonderful bluray set of this and all the rest of Chaplin's Essanay Comedys. They worked with the Archives Françaises du Film and Lobster Films in Paris as well as Cineteca di Bologna in Italy and The Museum of Modern Art along with the Blackhawk Film collection. It was a 12 year effort along with the backing of Association Chaplin to find the best surviving 35mm Nitrates all over the world. The result is absolutely mind blowing, 107 year old Films in Full HD looking like they might have been shot yesterday. I highly recommend it!

Thank you for the information. Film preservation is such an important topic. Over 90% of the world's pre-recorded-sound film era is said to be lost. It is a miracle that any 35mm film prints still survive, but they do. 35mm nitrate film gave incredibly detailed, sharp images with amazing tonality and depth. It was a very slow emulsion requiring a lot of light, depth of field was remarkable. Nothing recorded today can match that look. If the film was looked after and subject to humidity and heat the prints usually stand up pretty well. Congratulations to the teams that rescue film history, including the amazing work done with the Cinerama films.
