Police Catch Em Partying Too Hard & Speeding in Manatee Zone

Officers with Florida Fish and Wildlife were on water patrol south of Peanut Island near the Rybovich marina when we observed a vessel heading south on the east side of the mooring field on plane in a posted slow speed manatee zone. We initiated a vessel stop to address the violation.We made contact with the vessel,and the operator of the vessel I told [REDACTED] the reason for the stop and informed him it was a slow speed zone he had violated. [REDACTED] had bloodshot and glassy eyes while speaking with him. I asked for his registration, Boater ID and Florida license. While he was doing this, I could smell an unknown alcoholic beverage coming from his person. I asked [REDACTED] about it and he stated his father had taken the boat out and spilled alcohol. I continued with the stop and asked for life jackets for the all 10 people on board. [REDACTED] entered the helm hatch and as he was showing me the life jackets I could tell the smell was coming from his person.I boarded the vessel and found under the back seat of the leaning post, a storage filled with empty containers. I had [REDACTED] board my vessel.I informed [REDACTED] that since he was [REDACTED] the age of 21 and there was probable cause to believe that he may have consumed alc that I was going to administer a portable breath test (PBT) to determine if he was over the .02 limit for an operator of a vessel under the age of 21 years old. [REDACTED] provided 2 breath samples on the agency-issued PBT. The 1st breath was .056 and the 2nd breath was .059. The vessel and [REDACTED] was released to his father and registered vessel owner.

I partly agree and partly don’t. I agree these “FWC” and “Sea cops” tend too “harass” boaters all day for no reason, Especially ones with girls on the boat. But Alcohol DEFINITELY has a smell. And it is illegal to operate a boat while intoxicated. It’s dangerous. And the smell it’s very obvious, i don’t know if it should be legal grounds for a search tho as people “lie”. Really a breathalyzer should be standard. But if it was that way the county wouldn’t be able too “generate” money off arrests. At the end of the day they(the FWC and Sea Cops) still play an extremely important role in keeping boaters, people, and the waters safe. And are needed. I just think the way they train them should change. And maybe some better evaluations for hiring. And these cops were good!

Back in the late 80's early 90's when we drank under age and got caught they would just make us pour out or beers and tell us to leave. Kinda feel sorry for this generation.
