There are some serious implications of engine idling when it comes to fuel efficiency. Excessive motor vehicle idling leads to increased fuel consumption which not only increases wear on engine components and shortens vehicle life, but also negatively impacts the environment. What these officers are talking about is called a Runlock system and yes the engine is still idling which means its harming the engine and also using fuel, why you wouldn`t just turn the engine off is beyond me.

I can safely say that I would have a lot of experience with vehicle power systems. Modern, properly equipped vehicles will be able to charge an aux battery even when just idling as shown here. Quality alternators can provide about 80+% of their stated output while idling. The aux battery will be charged typically using a split charge system, or using a DCDC charger from the likes of Redarc, C-Tek etc. A police vehicle should be equipped with a battery with sufficient capacity that it would not need to have the engine running to keep the "lights" from functioning. Even, if by some miracle, the aux battery was depleted, the electronics onboard would shut them down safely, and as soon as the vehicle engine was started, charging power would go directly to the aux battery to enable the use of the lights and so on. LiPo4 batteries charge extremely fast, the battery does not need to be fully charged to allow equipment to operate. We have an aux battery in our vehicle and that powers all the lights, a 2400w oven, an 1800w induction cooker, the diesel heater, charging points for mobiles, laptops, 2 fridges and even cameras. We have been several days without needing to recharge, and thats even excluding solar input. The Sergeant should spend less time stuffing his face, get himself fit, and perhaps once he is happier with his own body, he will develop a more positive mental attitude towards members of the public with legit concerns.

The alternator works by turning mechanical energy into electrical energy. When your engine is on, it powers a drive belt that rests on a pulley attached to the alternator. The pulley turns the alternator's rotor shaft, which spins a set of magnets around a coil generating alternating current.

The (IVMA) project are currently building the new product which will replace the existing mobile data terminals (MDT) in 1330 vehicles on the MPS fleet. The IVMA solution will be permanently fixed in the vehicle and powered by the vehicle battery. The main difference between the old and new systems is the IVMA device has its own battery, substantially reducing vehicle battery usage. One of the benefits of the new solution is police vehicles will not need to be kept running to maintain power to the in vehicle device. Fuel emissions and costs will reduce. emergency vehicles are exempt from certain sections of the RTA, leaving engines running is exempt provided that the vehicle is an emergency vehicle and being used for that purpose. Take for example a fire appliance that has to have its engine running to be able to have its pump running when no-one is in or on the vehicle. The sergeant argues that his vehicle is running certain equipment for the purpose which it is being used for, i.e. radios, CCTV etc. He might be a bit grumpy but he's right. On this occasion at least.

“It’s secure”… ah ok, “a legal exemption to s42 is the vehicle is locked or has lots of equipment”. I’ll try and find that in The Road Traffic Act 1988. Meanwhile pointing out a criminal offence to a police officer is now an offence. Fact: All police vehicles have 2 (TWO) unique high power batteries. Most modern batteries don’t charge whilst idling either. So, you’ll never guess, but the police were RUDE, IGNORANT and very IGNORANT of the Law. And refused to identify properly. What a prat. Utter first rate prat.
@paulraper12 жыл бұрын
The simple solution would be to follow the law and put an officer in the vehicle so it would not be left idling unattended. We have to follow the law, so should they. There must have been 5 or 6 officers stood about, put one in the vehicle.
@iconhash51942 жыл бұрын
I believe that the law might not apply to police vehicles, which is why police cars are able to stay running without the keys. It wouldn't make sense for the police to spend money installing a system which would be illegal if used.

I deal with these vehicles all the time. When the vehicle is "operational" the aux battery works the onboard electronics. They are charged while the vehicle is running and you can also charge the aux battery via mains adapter overnight. The law you cite does not apply to operational police vehicles.

2:50 You're right AB. An idling engine won't charge the battery. It can help to provide power to auxiliary devices, but even then it would be a bad design decision not to have a secondary battery to provide power to those devices if they draw so much power. That might have been the case a decade or two back that the devices would've drawn a lot of power, but with modern equipment very unlikely. The main battery would be more than capable of keeping the devices going for an hour or so, more than enough time for them to handle whatever they are doing.
@matthewjdouglas64712 жыл бұрын
I think he means there's a secondary battery for the extra lights and klaxons etc. Still the the vehicle is idling and causing pollution
@gjclark24782 жыл бұрын
Wrong. An alternator charges at idle or at any speed. A generator only charges the faster it gets. If the batteries are in line and one battery is duff, it will drain the good battery .
@retroclickmedia44222 жыл бұрын
@@gjclark2478 While it is technically possible to charge your car battery by just idling, it’s not very efficient. You’d likely have to leave your car running for hours to even come close to a full charge. This is due to the amount of charge that is initially lost when cranking the engine. Some studies have shown that it can take between 15-30 minutes to recoup this initial charge
@TheSadButMadLad2 жыл бұрын
@@gjclark2478 An alternator is a generator. Leisure batteries are never in line with the main battery. The whole point being that the main battery is never drained by the devices thereby allowing the vehicle to always be started and then to charge up both batteries.

They have no regard for public money. I know this as my cousin is a sarge and he said fuel bills for police vehicles are incredibly high. Nobody cares as they don’t pay and nothing can be done. Engines are kept running in summer so the AC can run and in the winter so the heater is one and their vehicle is “cosy” when they return.
