Police seize $2.5M in drugs, lay hundreds of charges in investigation targeting GTA gang

York Regional Police say they have seized approximately $2.5 million worth of drugs, as well as cash, luxury vehicles and 18 firearms as part of a 14-month investigation targeting a criminal gang.
Police say 20 people have been charged in the investigation, dubbed "Project Lookout," which targeted drugs and guns.

Yup, and September 10th is just a quick hearing, not a trial or anything. These guys won't be sentenced for at least a year or two, until then they'll continue to be the neighbourhood drug dealers, and they'll have time to re-grow their stash / business, and arrange to hand off the business to family or their other gang members who have not been caught, by the time they need to go do their time. They will also arrive to prison with probably several $1000s worth of drugs stuffed up their butt, and will continue to make money off of struggling addicts in prison still and funnel the profits back out of the prison into their gangs hands, to buy more drugs and smuggle more back into the prison for them to sell more. VS. just arresting them today with no drugs and with their "business" left in shambles and they had no time to set up for someone to take over their business (their personal clients) so those are all now customers the gang will potentially lose... Our system is so fucking dumb. Like none of these people are innocent. Keep them in jail til trial!! If any are found to be innocent then we can give them some financial compensation in a year or two when their trial is done. Heck, they'll probably actually want to get to trial ASAP if they have a case to make for innocence so it won't even take that long...

Nah that's some BS people say. Only about 5% of fentanyl/heavy opioid addicts are on safe supply and the number is much much lower for other drugs, and I don't think safe supply even offers cocaine and several other popular illegal drugs. Most addicts are still out there struggling to afford drugs from drug dealers who make bank off of them and abuse them or use them in various ways. And they are still liable to be arrested for possession, too, though that is a lot rarer now than it used to be, but it is at the police discretion really, when they're dealing with someone. Not officially, of course, but I've had quite a few times where cops turned a blind eye or simply confiscated with no charge drugs that I had on me (probably so they can go use it themselves, whether actually via ingesting it, or like, use it in a sting operation or something, maybe plant it on someone who they really want to arrest compared to you, stuff like that).

This has to happen every single day endlessly if we actually want to solve the drug crisis in our country. $2.5 million worth of drugs and 20 gang members is absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of Toronto gangs and drugs... $2.5 million is MAYBE 1 day worth of drugs consumed in the York region. Toronto is much higher than that. The GTHA is probably $25 million worth of drugs sold per day, give or take like $5-10 million, I'm sure it is very inconsistent with spikes when welfare cheques drop + later in the week (pay day for working addicts). Most addicts spend about $100 / day on drugs (some A LOT more, some maybe a bit less like $60 - 80, but very very few under that level). I'd estimate we have about 200,000 addicts in the GTHA, maybe a bit more.... Easy to see that the numbers are well in excess of $10 million sold per day, and maybe much more. The EU, after 2008 recession, added illicit drug sales to their official GDP stats in order to make it seem like they got out of the recession quicker than they really did (though drug sales ARE economic activity... but still hilarious that they started to add it on even though they pretend like they want it ALL to stop completely, which 100% they do NOT actually want, there is big money in drug trafficking as well as addiction creating desperate young women to become prostitutes and porn stars, and then you start think about all the addiction counselors, the homeless outreach workers, the doctors and nurses helping addicts, the methadone and suboxone clinics, the pharmacy sales to addicts, all the different government agencies "looking into the problem", plus a major part of police budgets)... Anyways I bring this up because I'm thinking it'd be a classic Justin Trudeau move to follow the EU and add drug sales to our GDP here, since they're so obsessed with keeping it up artificially via immigration...
