Well apart from here is just one of many examples of them using the dagger to try and kill someone. In this case he attacked a woman and tried to kill her. She was left needing 100 stitches. He happened to see her in the street and of course he had a knife but it is illegal for the woman to carry a knife to protect herself, so she nearly died. So we allow them to have knives but we cannot have them and then they try and kill women in the street. Acceptable? www.expressandstar.com/news/crime/2016/07/01/sikh-who-stabbed-woman-with-ceremonial-dagger-in-neighbour-dispute-is-jailed-for-six-years/

Not one person said "islam" or "muslim" in this video. There is no "islamophobe" in this video, also there is no such thing as islamophobia as fearing islam is justified at this point. Respect to the Sikh gentleman in how he conducted himself here. This is anothet example of the beauty of the Sikh religion. I'd say 99% of the white UK population who are aware of the difference between Sikhi and other religions have nothing but respect and warmth towards the Sikh community. At the risk of being controversial here, the problem the elderly gentleman has is very clear to, he is making the mistake that many folk do ie confusing Sikhi with Islam which beggars thr question of why many people feel very uncomfortable with Islam. When you remove the apologists arguments, reference to western foreign policy, taking verse out of context etc etc and you are left with islam as an ideology then I feel that people should indeed be uncomfortable with it AND should feel confident in voicing that. Not so with Sikhi, to my knowledge Sikhi never mandated many of the things that Islam did, even when Sikhs where being pursecuted by Islam and the British empire. The actions of individuals then maybe but as an ideology then no.

there should be no confusion between a Sikh and a Muslim, I find it offensive and rude when I am labeled a religion that I don't even follow. and this is due to the lack of education and knowledge amongst the average citizen. Either we get our own homeland which the British, Pakistan and India took away by force, or we educate others on who we are so we don't get confused, and thus we must state we are not Muslim to declare that we are Sikh, just like we aren't Hindu because we are Sikh. The average person thinks Sikh means a sect of Islam like Shiite or Sunni, they don't realize that it is a completely separate religion, all they see is the turban and the beard and similar skin complexion and quickly jump to the conclusion of Muslim, its offensive.

It's the culture and the mindset of western nations that they see weapons as hostile and display of aggregation. In streets and crowds it can be quite frightening to them member of public wearing any weapons. Sikhs need to keep their image clean with their good deeds.

Respect the way you handled the situation! I feel like you should also explain the symbolism of the kirpan as well instead of just simply saying weapon. People should know the difference between a weapon for instance a gun compared to a kirpan which is part of a religious ceremony like the other cop said and hold tremendous value just like a cross that people carry. Wahe guru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh.

Sikh religion was born in an era when northern India faced lot of oppression from the “peaceful” invaders. The gurus made a warrior clan out of the innocent Hindus at that time. The dagger serves a purpose . I am proud of the Sikhs and Guru Nanak’s songs can melt a stony heart. Being compassionate and courageous sums up a Sikh at its best !

I hope no Sikhs watching this video think the views of this old man are common in Britain. They are NOT. The Sikhs are our brothers and sisters here. I'm very impressed how the speaker kept his cool. An old timer such as the old man should be the first to appreciate the heroic efforts of the Sikhs for Britain in the war. Normally I'd have sympathy for a misguided old man like that, but I expect he was just as ignorant when he was younger. Another great video from Basics of Sikhi!

I am a Sikh myself. If I put myself in other shoes, Even if i know about 5Ks, I would still have a question back of mind, Why you can carry Kirpan and I can't carry a dagger? Bringing legislation in other countries and having some special status, well then also expect people will go against it. These people are way tolerant then us. Instead of wasting your time on the streets, put you time in fixing flaws in our religion and community. 1st thing lets work on Separating Politics from our Religion.

+WorldChronicle I support your view. Religion doesn't need to start governing one's life. I know salesmanship, and I see how this Sikh brother continues to sell the free food distribution in Gurudwara, as a hallmark, to others unaware of Sikhism in many of his videos (ofcourse reflecting alongside the other great virtues). But within this very one act that he so eagerly keeps pointing out to, what greatness I see over and above the free food, infact even over and above the fact that the consumers can be of any religion, is that even those, who service and volunteer towards this great task of free food distribution within a Gurudwara, can be of any religion. No one is kept out from engaging in this positive karma. That is great and may be something unique to Sikhism. I am a Hindu. Post seeing this video I noticed a bit of hypocrisy. Our Sikh brother in this video stated that he would move to another country if he was not allowed to carry Kirpan, but in another video of this very channel he said: "Sikhs carried Kirpans (in UK) illegally even before the law came into existence, and if in case the law was to be removed, Sikhs would continue to carry this Kirpan illegally as it is part of our religion".

This whole "one rule for one person and another for other people" idea is stupid. Police can carry taser's and drive faster than the speed limit. People don't say "oh one law the for police and another for everyone else. If you want to drive above the speed limit and carry a taser, become a police officer and take on all the responsibilities that come with it. Same with a kirpan if you want to carry one become a sikh and take all the responsibilities that come with it.

One question : If you do carry the knife for those in need you might as well carry around a small handgun or something. I mean if your true purpose is to defend people. I doubt a small knife like that is going to defend someone effectively.

+Joe KPS Idea of carrying a knife is not to just carry a weapon. It is about carrying a mindset and purpose. It is also a reminder. No matter how good a weapon is if right purpose and mindset is not there, that weapon is useless. Also, defending efficiently does not need best weapon, it might just need a weapon (it be a gun or stone or even a pen) to be used in right place, right time and right way if needed.
@sunhun

+Joe KPS I somewhat agree. As a non baptized sikh in adoration of my faith i recognize the fact that our Guru`s told us to abide with the turning of time and also stand up for reighteousness. As a martial religion for upholding truth and fighting against oppression, we must adapt with technology as a means of knowledge as well as warfare. What do you say basics of sikhi veero?

Thats great to hear. We sikhs look different so we can stand out and people can know who to call for help. People trust us because of our faith and our history and our actions... You are an individual, and sound like a good person but the state cannot just trust anyone without a history behind them. Thats why perhaps there can be permits for people with a proven history of community work
