I feel safer in a police car than I do in my own - or standing by the highway. Years ago, I had a deer run out in front of me on U.S. 54 just outside Fulton, MO. Although it was in state jurisdiction, it was not a state trooper who responded, but a very nice officer with the Fulton PD. He suggested that I sit with him in his car while he wrote out the paperwork and we waited for the tow truck and for my wife to pick me up. I felt totally safe. If you're a law abiding citizen, there is no danger getting into a police car. And if not, well, that's your fault. And I would think that even if you're a criminal, officers would be generally polite and respectful - as long as you cooperate. But break the law and resist - that's a different matter.

As easy as it would've been to pit, until she crossed that median she wasn't hurting anyone, just wasting the cop's time. A car is a deadly weapon and thus a pit maneuver is lethal force reserved for individuals using their own cars to try to kill people by running red lights, speeding excessively, blacking out at night, driving on the wrong side of the road, etc. If you listen to the radio traffic, the reason they pitted at all is because she crossed the median into oncoming lanes. Prior to her doing that they were planning on just boxing her in. When TRP Smith went to get in front of her, that's when she crossed the median and only then was a pit warranted.

With as many of these I've watched, there seems to be a regular litany they follow... They don't stop or they run because they're "afraid". They "can't breathe" (screamed at the top of their lungs, by the way). They yell "I'm not resisting" while they fight being handcuffed. No matter how crazed they act, they can stop and clearly articulate "Where's my phone?", their car can be totaled/on fire/upside down, but they're more concerned about where their phone is. They immediately "wanna call my momma". Strangely, for some reason, never their fathers. They are being "harassed" or "racially profiled" They "didn't do nothin'", never mind they were doing 100 in a 45 zone or have expired plates. They "don't feel safe". They have "mental issues". The cops are "racist". They repeat the same thing over and over and over and over and over.... 9 times out of 10 they don't have their license on them, or it's revoked/suspended/expired.

Another thought to consider - when someone doesn't stop where the cop wants them to, they can be calling ahead, because Lord knows they HAVE to have their phones, and setting up an ambush that they'll lead the cops into. I don't believe someone should be allowed to just get on their phones at a traffic stop, and call momma or brother, or their friends to come meet them at the stop. That is just increasing the tensions at the stop because, again, you KNOW how that is going to go when a group of them surrounds the cops.
