That is why I like russian war movies. Even though they tend to have some propaganda, they also are not afraid to tell some truth, like for example that Germans were a force to be recond with. In american movies, there a single P51 would shoot down at least 4 german fighters, shouting in the cockpit, while american president would be giving his speech about land of the brave etc. Oh and of course a pompatic music would play in the background.

in fact, the small i-16 could and did sometimes take down bf 109s because they were more maneuverable and being slower could slip behind.

Those chubby little fighters are SO cool! They probly got chewed up bad by the 109's but I like to think a few I-16's got lucky now and then.

The I-16 is such an oddball plane, that you cannot help but love it. Think the only thing I wouldn't cotton to, is the open cockpit. Would be a good plane for a more equatorial environment but, heard it gets a tad cold over in Russia. Wonder if they ever modified it for winter duty? Or did they only use Yak's during the cold months?

Oddball or not it was highly influential in 1934 and arguably was the best fighter plane of the mid 30's. Naturally rapid development made it obsolete by the 1940's but it still could shoot down modern fighters (the first shot down Messerschmitt Bf109 was by a I-16) in the hands of aces. It was generally unwise trying to dogfight them at low altitudes even in 1941. Open cockpits were still the standard in the early 1930's and with practical parachutes being developed most pilots found that the early canopies were prone to either jamming or difficult to open if they had to parachute. For this reason the early I-16's did come with a canopy but most of them were removed for practical reasons since they experienced the very same issues. Here's how they kept the cockpit warm. The engine did naturally produce a lot of heat (which was an early issue in hot Spanish summers) and there were heat vents that lead the heat from the engine straight into the cockpit. So this was not quite unlike driving a convertible in the middle of a winter with the car heater ventilating heat into the driver's compartment. Cold but hardly unbearable for the pilot. It's also quite possible they simply put the canopies back on during the winter months.

The I-16 type 5 had an enclosed cockpit, but the visibility was terrible and it was cramped so they later removed it. It didn't help that the Type-5 had an Telescope sight instead of a regular one, making the cockpit even more cramped

That was true in the beginning but in a year Soviets were producing armament in the air, ground and sea equal or superior to the Germans. Trick was training men to use it and towards the end of the war the Germans were completely annihilated. Even Japan capitulated in Manchuria with a victory for the Soviets unparalleled even when compared to Marines on any of the island fighting in the Pacific. Planes specifically Yak-9, La-5, IL-2, Pe-2 and Tu-2 will go down in history as some of the best.
