Ciò che colpisce maggiormente in questo balletto è l'estrema attenzione alle positure figurali alcune delle quali inedite ed estremamente accattivanti in dualità d'ensemble mirabile. OLTREMODO BRAVI.BIGHIN GIULIO RENZO

A stunning and disturbing look at narcissism and how it makes relationships impossible. Whenever they establish a connection, they turn to the mirror. "How do I look?"

There is a commentary that the ballet was meant to be a practice and the audience was the mirror in the practice room. 😉

i see it more as a representation of the fleeting emotional connections that dancers create with one another as they work on dance pieces. they are sensual with each other as the black swan and the prince, or romantically in love like the sleeping beauty and the prince and yet they are also two young dancers filled with hormones. all of this exists on stage and in the mirror as the dancers look at each other's bodies for the purpose of making a ballet, but also.....a sort of shimmering eroticism that maybe doesn't belong? the boy breaks the spell by letting the erotic energy spill into the real world, scaring away the innocent ballerina.

If you refer to Tanaquil LeClerc and Jacques de Amboise old version, what appears different is the speed and the passion. Tanaquil LeClerc was a unique dancer and when she performed this there was a certain way she moved that gave it an unhurried look. Her expressions were intense, as if her character was experiencing everything for the first time and moving in ways that extended the different moments.

Very interesting nice and sublime, I love it. If i remember right this is very different from the performance with dÀmboise and Le Clercq. (Love them both) Is this staged by robbins himself?Malakhof is super!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Likely not. Jerome Robbins died in 1998, when Polina Seminova was in her mid-teens.

I actually prefer Robbins version to that of Nijinsky, whose choreography is more of a modern dance piece than balletic and more erotic. This is sensual but more innocent. SemIonova is wonderful, but I wish though there was a video of Nureyev dancing this with Noella Pontois of POB which he did.

Beautiful dancing by Semionova, but ... the music is entitled Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun - NOT Prelude to the Afternoon of a Nymph! The male dancer should take the main role and, moreover, he should look like and dance like a non-human creature. Malakhov here is just a pretty boy dancing with a pretty girl. Nijinsky's choreography is still by far the best. If you want to re-choreograph the piece - fine! Just don't depart from Mallarme's original story, for which Debussy wrote this exquisitely beautiful music!

I fully disagree. If all you see here is a pretty boy dancing with a pretty girl, you've missed a great deal of symbolism and storytelling. This is not the same ballet, more than it is a ballet inspired by the original. Though less overtly animalistic, the Faun still projects primal energy and is just as musically luxurious in this version. Though less directly sexual, the ballet is just as or more so introspective and powerful. The mirror device is beautiful and expressive, as is the childish exploration between the two dancers and their self possession. It's a sensitive commentary on Nijinsky's masterpiece, certainly not a revival or a cheap adaptation.

@@duncanbarlow I agree that the Robbin's version is a great work in its' own right. I found your comments it's a "sensitive commentary' rings true for me.

This is another choreography by Jerome Robbins and ofcourse no one can tell a choreographer what a male dancer should do and how he should dance! It is another interpretation by an amazing choreographer with two exqusite dancers!

I don't like Robin's version of old good choreography. And nothing special about Malakhov. There were better fauns. Although Semionova is very interesting!
