Polio Treatment ,Post Polio Syndrome,INTERVIEW With A Patient undergoing treatment

1. Dr. Bhola what is the meaning of adult polio and how big this problem in India?
We say Polio has been eradicated from India. There are no new cases of polio in India. But patients suffering from polio have very few treatment options in India. Patients who are more than 8 to 10 years old need treatment. .But they are not much aware about treatment options available in India.
More than 40 lac people are suffering from polio in India.
They are tired of roaming to different hospitals for polio treatment. Whenever they go to the hospitals they are suggested for the calipers, shoes & sticks by the doctors. Even doctors are not much aware about the treatment options for the polio patients.
2. Dr. Bhola when the patients come to you, are they depressed. So how is your experience with the patients?
When polio patients come we examine their muscle power, muscles and joints for 1 or 2 days.
We also examine their gait. We see how their gait can be made energy efficient. What are expectations of patients? After assessment and x-rays we come on conclusion.
We see which parts of leg is involved weather it is in hip, knee or ankle or both. I decide where to correct the deformity in the leg so that patient can get maximum benefits.
3. Now you have this patient, what were her complaints and what treatment you have given to her?
She is more than30 years of age. She is having polio in her both legs right side is more involved than left.
There is a stage of polio which is called post-polio syndrome. In this stage patient get another attack of polio after 10-20 years. After this attack the condition gets worse. Patient’s deformity increases
There are no more treatment options for this post- polio syndrome in the world, but when we do surgery in these patients they get benefits.
How is your experience after taking treatment here?
My experience is very good. My leg below knee was not straight. It is my 4th day after surgery. Now my leg is straighter than before.
When did you have this problem?
When I was 4 year old I got this problem. When i was child I did not know that my deformity can be corrected.
In 2008 I saw a patient who got operated in Bhola hospital. Her condition looked better than before. Her condition was worse before operation. After meeting the patient, next day I met Dr. Bhola. He said that you can get benefits with the operation, but it needs stay in hospital for around 3 months.
When I fell down previously I got injured on another leg also.
For last 8 years I am regular visitor to the hospital. Whenever I came to know that new polio patient are admitted, I used to come to Bhola hospital. I met them before treatment, during treatment and after treatment. I have seen 20-25 patients getting better.
How do you feel after meeting polio patients?
Patients were satisfied with the treatment. Patients said that their life has now changed.
What message you want to give to the patients who are suffering from adult polio?
After operation now I can feel that I can be cured. Adults who are suffering from polio should go for the operation.

Sir.... I m 37 year old...I had been suffering from polio in my tight leg since when I was 6 month old..... I had done measurements my both legs.... shortening is 1 cm...right tibial bone short is 11 mm.....but knee joint bend on forward..... tightening in gastrocnimus muscles...... contractions on achllies tendon....one degree Aquinas........ anterior rotation of hip joint..........theigh ki muscle weak h sir....ek saal se physiotherapy.... muscles activation bagrah le rahi hu......phele bahut limping thi but ab kam h.....but pain badh gya h...hip aur knee joint me..... please give me your best suggestions 🙏🏻🙏🏻
