Polish howitzer Krab is BETTER than you think!

In this video we will try to understand why in the current Ukrainian-Russian war, Polish self-propelled howitzer AHS Krab has a great advantage over other similar systems like French Caesar, German PzH 2000, Czech Dana and the US M109.

The Panzerhaubitze appears to be a fantastic howitzer, but in practice.... it's hard to fight with it effectively, as it's plagued by constant failures. Reliability is not a parameter that can be easily printed on an advertising flyer, like... firing range, for example.

Funny that it wasn't "plagued by constant failures" when Germany or the Netherlands used them in Afghanistan for years. And that, I might say, is even farther from the next place capable of servicing this system. I think a factor worth mentioning is that those 18 Krabs are brand new, while the PzH 2000 have been in service for 20 years. AHS Krab carries 40 rounds and has a sustained firing rate of 5 rounds per minute. So assuming a shoot-and-scoot tactic, you can expect them to shoot set up, fire 5 rounds, and get going to the next position. So 5 rounds and than several minutes for the barrel and other components to recover from the wear-and-tear on the material. A PzH 2000 has a sustained firing rate of 11 rounds per minute and carries 60 rounds. So in the same setting, they'd be firing 11-12 rounds in a minute before they move on to the next position. Twice the wear-and-tear for the barrel and other components. And according to reports, Ukrainian crews fired way beyond 100 rounds per day, for weeks. If you keep abusing a 20 year old machine like that, eventually it's going to break Also, of all SPH delivered to Ukraine, PzH 2000 has by far the longest range - 40-47km with base bleed rounds. @@szapio8480 That doesn't change the fact that barrels and a few other mechanical parts are the bottlenecks that restricts you to to 100 or 200 rounds per day - even if the PzH 2000 could probably easily fire 10,000 a day. Except it would probably need a new barrel after the first day and would break down the second, requiring several months worth of repairs. Anyway, yes those PzH 2000 are 20 years olders - the model is 20 years older (though the models the Krab takes it's main components from aren't necessarily) and the individual German units have been in service for 20 years, while the Polish Krabs are fresh from the factory. Apart from that: where do you get this nonsense from about the PzH 2000 being slow? Do they tell you those kind of stores on Polish TV? ​@@nupagadii5834 Honestly, I have no idea. I think normally you'd exchange the barrel every 2000 rounds or so? It's been reported though that the Russians don't mind sacrificing precision to get out more shots per barrel, since they often fire barrages by large amount of ranged artillery anyway.

You forgot to add about the durability of the barrels, Ukraine stated that it lasted 3500 shots and continued to shoot accurately. Nobody appreciates our engineers who improve components purchased from abroad, but the war showed everything.

Lufe is made by Poland at HSW Stalowa Wola under a license purchased from the French nexter and it is our plants that do it so well. Krab has turret bae system mtu engine and Korean chassis but the electronics of the topaz system is completely Polish. We also manufacture a lot of dam structures for engines and other components from other manufacturers

U can say whatever u want about Krab. The manufacturer gives a guarantee for 2500 rounds. Some of the Krab's have up to 8,000 shots on the timer in Ukraine...

Actually, you're mistaken. We (Poland) gave Ukraine 18 Krab howitzers as a gift and sold and deliver 54 at the exact moment before we even saw the money. Usually country has to wait for such a great order for about 3 years to have the weapon produced and delivered. Poland sent the howitzer taken not even from the army storage but from the regular artillery units. 72 Krab's been fighting in Ukraine for a few months already. Who helps fast helps twice.

The Polish howitzer is the best because it works in a system + command vehicles + drone reconnaissance (FLYeye from WB Electronics). In addition, the barrels are of very high quality, thanks to which the number of shots in Polish systems is 2 or even 3 times greater than in German ones.

@@janmajdowski It’s much more than that. Entire Polish army has integrated Topaz on some level. It literally is Uber for artillery. Soldier can request fire support by pressing the icon of enemy vehicle on his tablet. Literally every person with a Topaz terminal has all the data from all recon (drones and regular reco) in the area. You look at the screen, see an enemy formation ahead of your unit. You don’t even know or care if it was detected by a drone, recon etc. You just pick it and press the ,,attack” button. And then the guns shell it.

It's both funny and exciting for me to hear about the HSW Krab on english YT channel, because Krabs are made in my home city Stalowa Wola, Poland, which is rather small and has only ~60k inhabitants. Actually the whole city is based on military industry, and it even have been founded just 1 year before WW2 in 1938 mainly to produce military stuff.

another important factor - fire rate PZH has a higher rate of fire, but it cannot be increased due to the full automatic. There is a semi-automatic in Krab, so when the Ukrainians prepare ammunition, they exceed the rate of fire of the crab from the manual. So the Ukrainians can fire a salvo faster and run away, this is not in line with the procedure, but there are other priorities in war.

@@BlackSeaReport There's another factor, which is mentioned by Ukrainian soldiers: PZH due it's fully automatisation of rounds delivery system is useless when it is broken (ammo stowed under the floor). Krab's system may be completely omitted, when it's out of order and rounds may be delivered fully by hand and howitzer remains still operational.

One thing is not correct 2:33 - its not FROM a british AS-90. Its BASED on it, since Brits lost technical specs. HSW had to design it based on physical pieces. Which allowed them to improve design. Also, according to OSINT and Ukrainian troops, some AHS managed to exceed 9k rounds sometime ago, HSW guarantees 2.5k without failure :) EDIT: 18 - this was official number. By now its known that ~50 went in, at least.

WB Electronics Topaz is more than artillery calculator. It’s literally Uber but for guns. In order to request fire support all that a soldier has to do is press a button on his own Topaz terminal. And the gunners will recieve the fire mission on their terminal.

Actually Poland gave Ukraine over 52 Krabs. It was sources from internet cameras over railways. And it main advantage besides the mentioned above is the Topaz system. All of them are connected and managed by it, allowing for unprecedented control

AHS Krab is the best artilery piece for Ukraine. Only Pzh 2000 is better but only on paper. In reality they break down very quickly and around 1/3 of them if not more are in constant repair and out of action.

All those howitzers are great and together they fill up different niches on the battlefield. But Krab of those presented is the most universal one. Also it matches perfectly the style of fighting of Ukrainian forces: shot, quickly change position, shot, quickly change position and so on... You can't do that with the french one for example... I would say the best fit for purpose is Krab and German one. But Krab wins again, due to issues mentioned in this video with the latter one.

In data recieved from Ukrain Krab proved to be actually slightly more accurate then PZH2000 (and this is counting when it works properly), to it, it is cheaper for buy (but more expensive in long run because of the extra crew man), it is more durable also. Krab is currently proving to be superior to his german counterpart.

Experienced arty crews set the time frame to learn the basics of operating the PzH 2000 as it is meant to be at 6 months, but I read a quote from a Croatian artilleryman who said they knew how to properly operate them after 6 months of training, but it took them a year until he and his comrades had grasped all the possible capabilities of a PzH 2000 and knew how to combine and use them to best effect. Now, you might say a system with such a long learning curve - long but probably not very steep - is a liability. Learning a new weapon system shouldn't take almost half a long as learning an entirely new military occupation. Nonetheless, that's how it is, so data collected even this january would basically be data that compares (I assume) fully trained Krab and CAESAR crews with partially trained PzH 2000 crews. Apart from the fact that the data is invalid from the start since your competition is between almost factory-new systems on the one side and PzH 2000 that have been in service - at best - for 21 years, worst case for a full 25 years, potentially several summer getting scorched by the summer temperatures in Afghanistan. Armchair generals like us argue about to what extent they PzH 2000 were abused by Ukrainian arty crews. I think the Ukrainians know best, and they're the ones who decided to spend another €1.7 billion on 100 (new, not refurbished) Panzerhaubitzen 2000. As for the price, 2 of the 4 countries that joined the program since +/- 2015 bought old, refurbished units from Bundeswehr stocks. Only Hungary and Qatar ordered 24 newly produced units each. Croatia for example chose 12 old ones from Bundeswehr stock, refurbished and modernized, along with 4 additional units delivered "as is" for spare parts and training. The whole package cost them merely €55 million. Considering the 4 units to be used for parts are a necessity to keep the modernized 12 howitzers operational for another say 15 years, that's still less than €5 million per unit. Which shows that there are cheaper options for smaller countries, though I doubt Germany will sell off any more units. From what I've read they will conduct a thorough, joint "mid-life extension" program on their remaining fleet, keep some 110+ units active and complement them with an equal number of RCH 155 - of which Ukraine ordered another 18 units for €12 million per unit. I think that it makes more sense to compare the Krab to the RCH 155 than it's predecessor from 25 years ago. And once they'll finally get delivered, I'll be very interested to see if all these new technologies that KMW has been working on basically for 20 years are actually coming together in this configuration. Part of their approach was to take the gun and all related mechanical parts from the PzH2000, make the loader entirely autonomous (which is already an option for the most recent PzH 2000 I think) and combine their proprietary hard- and software in one module, the AGM. Recent years have seen experiments on using the AGM on ships, as well as different mounting platforms - the first one was the carrier for the M270, until about 15 years ago development included a version using the ASCOD 2 platform (dubbed "Donar") but ever since they seem to have finally decided on the Boxer chassis, maybe with version mounted on their own HX3 military truck line as a side project. I have no information if RCH 155 improves the already exceptional precision achievable with a PzH2000, but other performance markers seem more like they're a tad of a step back compared to the PzH 2000. However, as we've discussed, the PzH 2000 already crosses IMO the line where more firepower/frequency is actually usefull, given the artillery is limited severely in the number of shells it can fire per day. So if the RCH 155 fires 9 instead of 10.5 rounds per minute, that may not be all that relevant. As for range, again it seems the RCH 155 barely reaches the performance of the PzH 2000 - though maybe future iterations will push the envelope there, same as it was with the PzH 2000. Boat-tail ammunition fired from an early model of the PzH 2000 also had a range given of 40km, which was later corrected to 40-47km. Whether the reason was a real hardware improvement, software update, new ammunition type or simply the result of taking on targets beyond 40km on test ranges and finding it didn't cause any damage to the hardware, I don't know. Anyway, apart from possibly being a bit slower and (more significant) potentially a bit shorter on range than it's daddy, the RCH 155 comes with some massive innovations that are so far unique in any artillery system on the market. First of all, they reduce the complement per unit by 60%, and if they manage to make the RCH 155 even remotely like other Boxer modules that can be exchanged within hours, if they get it down to 2 days say, that would provide enormous flexibility to artillery units to quickly field more units if necessary - and prepare for it not by having load and loads of additional SPH that need maintenance, etc - just by buying more AGM modules to use on other Boxer frames - troop transport, fire support, reconaissance, IFV, or even Skyrangers. The Bundeswehr has hundreds for different roles. Imagine if you can turn your SHORAD system into a howitzer or an IFV, depending on your need. And I thought Transformers existed only in the movies. Then there is the option to control the RCH 155 remotely. Which creates entire new possibilities. Imagine in the early days in Ukraine, as the Russians were advancing rather swiftly at certain fronts. If the Ukrainian army had been equipped with the RCH 155, they could have just left half a dozen of them behind, hiddden in a barn - only to activate them, let them spread out over the occupied territory and create havoc at dozens of positions, creating the impression of successful attacks at one place, draw all available reinforcements - before actually attacking from entirely different position. The resupply is also entirely automated. The resupply vehicle connects to the RCH 155 back-to-back and automatically transfers new shells and charge packages - and I guess fuel as well. That would mean you could keep your artillery constantly on the move, no need to pause for the crew to rest, and even if one gets spotted, what are the chances Russian artillery will hit a moving target? Even if they let a whole battery fire a volley, by the time those shells hit the ground, even if the RCH 155 is moving at only 10 km/h while firing, it would be 500m away by then.

If an unexperienced crew managed to get better resoults with lower logistical problems at the same time, then it is an indicator that, this system is better. Btw Ukrainians both a 5 year production plan of Krabs from HSW and they got most of Polish ones (i think 80 or so). So still Ukrain will focus on Krab with PZH2000 just as support (as Poland cant produce them faster or more, and its one of the reasons why they are buying K9's from Korea).

@@T0ffik1 If you don't mind me asking, your estimate that the learning curve for AHS Krab and the 20 year older PzH 2000... is based on what? Have you done MOS artillerist training, followed by a year of service in two different armies, one that uses the Krab (well, that would leave only Poland then) and one that uses the PzH 2000? Otherwise the statement is just nonsense, no offense, the learning curve for any two complex artillery systems will be different. 54 AHS Krab were transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces so far, and 28 PzH 2000 (initially 7+5 by DE+NL, followed by 3+3 by DE+NL, finally another 4 by DE and 6 by IT). And I think the fact that Ukrainian crews managed to break 6 of the initial 12 systems in less than 8 weeks despite video-assistance from the artillery center in Idar-Oberstein kinda proves my point that it's a significantly more complex system. As do the statements by Croatian artillerists describing the change in the results they achieved after 6 months of training compared to another 6 months of practice. Then there remains the fact that the AHS Krabs were new, while the first batch of German PzH2000 was not only 20+ years old, but the units came from storage, not even from active service. Finally, out of 54 AHS Krab, 7 were destroyed and 2 were damaged, while out of 28 PzH 2000 1 was damaged, as was 1 SPH CAESAR. www.oryxspioenkop.com/2022/02/attack-on-europe-documenting-ukrainian.html I guess part of that difference would be due to half of those PzH 2000 being absent several weeks for repairs. 18 CAESAR however were not in repair, and you would expect from the numbers fielded to have 3 of them destroyed/damaged. I'd guess an additional factor in greater losses to enemy fire were probably differences in range. If a PzH 2000 or a CAESAR fires a projectile from 36km, while an AHS Krab fires from 30km, that adds about 1200km² that the enemy has to scout to locate the unit firing from 36km distance. The part about why 118 PzH2000/RCH155 are meant as a support element to 60 ordered AHS Krab I didn't quite get. Didn't quite get the part about why Poland ordered 648 K9 Thunder, either. I mean, the first batch of 212 K9 Thunder will be delivered until 2026, but the remaining 436 will be produced in Poland in facilities that will be purpose-built until then. Seems to me they could have built at least the same production capabilities for the AHS Krab in that time. So I understand why Poland decided to purchase 212 K9 to backfill their own artillery, but I fail to understand why they chose to continue to locally produce a foreign howitzer instead of their own domestic development. If I were a potential customer, I'd ask myself why Poland chose a foreign system over their own.

@@hisredrighthand5212 Im sorry how do you estimate that first of all Krab is 20yo? the project was started 20y ago, the first krab is 9yo... 2nd of all how do you estimate that outside of autoloading mechinism PZH is more advanced (and till now it seems it is a regression and not update)? Krab has basicly all the same functions and it got delivered with all the equipment except comunicating system that is specific only for Poland. Till now data from Ukrain shows that Krab is has accurate targeting/gun system that also can work for 8000-9000 shots (what was proven in ukrain - althrough warranty is up to 2500), and no braking autoloader. Till now you cant even dat when the Krab was made and yet you talk like you know anything. Please read about Krab first then talk. Btw till now im basing on Ukrain delivered data + actually being in army as im from a 3 generation army family (and half of my family sits either on tanks or on mobile arty. Im in a tank unit).

@@T0ffik1 That's a misunderstanding, I wrote that PzH2000 is 20 years older. Which is only a rough estimate. 185 PzH 2000 were ordered in 1996 and delivered until around 2000 afaik. As for the Krab, from what I understand there were a number of different prototypes based on different barrels and chassis being tested, but according to Wikipedia, regarding the decision for the K9 chassis and it's delivery it says: _"It went through type acceptance testing in October 2015. The test ended successfully in April 2016, allowing series production. In April 2016, the Ministry of National Defence and the manufacturer concluded the research and development phase."_ Subsequently, five regiments were provided with 24 new AHS Krab each, one regiment per year. That's how I end up with 20 years: cleared for series production in 1996 (PzH 2000) and 2016 (AHS Krab), followed by the rollout of newly produced units in the following 4-5 years. As for being more advanced, I was thinking about rate of fire, range, etc. But I don't have any firsthand experience, while you seem to have plenty. So who am I to tell you about your profession? I guess they're roughly similar, no? As for the breakage of the autoloader, I have no way of verifying whether that was as stated by the German side due to excessive strain from too many rounds being fired per day and repeated attempts to go beyond the allowed range by using additional propelling charges - or if the autoloader is just too frail for the conditions of months-long artillery duels, I have no way of knowing. Now that Germany has a decent defense minister (I think) I hope he will fix the terrible mistake of his predecessors and introduce a separate Air Defense Wing in the Bundeswehr again. A good place to start would be buying a dozen PSR-A Pilica or two from Polish PGZ. Beautiful system. Would be ideal to shoot down Iranian Shahed-136 drones in Ukraine.

Well, Ukrfaine got 70 Krabs months ago, beside that 80 akacja units were delivered. Nobody talks about that, since its not broadcasted in news. Polish military experts already confirmed those numbers. 70 working Krabs are much better than 6/12 working Pz2000, simple

Correction: The K-9 is not from Samsung. Hanwha acquired the company, specifically Samsung Techwin, in 2014. Hanwha is now manufacturing the AS-21 Redback IFV, K-239 Chunmoo MLRS, AESA radar for KF-21 Boramae, etc as well as K-9 Thunder SPG 2:22

You forgot to mention that - according to Ukrainian soldiers at least - AHS Krab can fire a few thousand rounds and still be operational while vaunted PzH 2000 can fire only a few hundred rounds before it needs to have its barrel replaced.

Sorry, that is nonsense. Ukrainians fire several hundred shots per day with every artillery system, which means the PZH2000 would need a new barrel almost every day. Do you really think that's accurate? The manufacturer's guarantee for the PZH2000 is 4,500 shots before the barrel should be replaced and some Ukrainian crews have fired 20,000 shots with one barrel.
