Do you have any rules for alternation of L vs Ł, or do you have to memorize it? There is byli, but były, skały but skalne. Unlike Poles or Slovaks, we Czechs merged both variants of L to normal L. So only Slovak helps in written form - L sometimes means Polish Ł and Ľ means Polish L.

Certain letters (especially i, sometimes e) tend to "soften" the L sound from the Ł to the L. So if you see a sound change from y to i, and particularly for many locative case endings and masculine plural endings, the Ł tends to be softened to L.

@@sungalaxia Thank you. I have noticed that Ł is almost never followed by i, but to make it harder L could have both i and y. I was just trying to find some logic in this. I saw even "stronger softening" in zły -> źli 😀 or złe vs źle. I must always think about it to say it correct - Czech is bad advisor here (zlé vs zle).
