I climbed it before they closed it down. It's a room up top and the sun shines thru at certain day of the year into these keyholes and illuminate whatever was in the line of light

I was able to climb it when you were allowed by tourists. Back in 2009... I was able to go in the temple where the panther is. I will admit the climb down was intimidating

When I was there in 2002, you were allowed to climb up the steps of any of the pyramids and take pictures. I mean, they were built to (walk up), lol. Oh, how the times have changed. Rules for everything.

Yeah they are worried about the 2 thousand year old steps are going to become damaged, and also, these Pyramids have recently become sacred to the mostly Spanish descendants who live in Mexico. So much so they will turn to violence if you risk damaging the sacred stairs.

I love that place it was so amazing when we had our opportunity to go I wish people would respect it so it would be around for thousands of years more but the more people trample on that place the more damage is done. Please folks respect it at a distance. These are definitely one of the wonders of the world to me I'm so thankful I got to take my sons and let them see it.

I'm thankful to have climbed it with my young son. Going down, he insisted on sitting on our butts and going down one at a time. It was awesome and everyone loved it. Great memory.

I was there in the early 2000 . Going up wasn't that bad but coming back down was a lot more difficult. I ended up sitting on my butt and slid down. You don't realize how narrow those steps are till you start back down.

I was fortunate to climb this pyramid on 2006 jusy prior to its closure. It's a beautiful view from the top step but gets scarier the closer to the edge that you get.

For those that don't know why the last 2 walked up in a zig zag.. The steps where intentionally made steep, this was because it keeps your eyes focused on the ground and not up towards where the god would be.

When he got to the top you it’s crazy how small he looked. Makes you take into account how tall the structure is. It’s not allowed but many of us wish we could experience that. Imagine how horrifying and amazing to be standing there on top of that glorious structure - taking everything in and thinking about those poor sacrifices and what they may have seen in their final moments.

It seems they don't have a clear sign to tell them not to climb? Im sure the real pyramid builders wouldn't care for people climbing the pyramid which is why they built it with stairs!! But If they clearly said dont then dont! No point in annoying the locals!

When I was at Chichen Itza in 2011 the tour guides encouraged the members of our group to climb them, i didn't but others did, so it isn't forbidden. If people are acting like this they can kiss the tourists' money good-bye.

I was there and Uxmal when I was 8 or 9 years old (1981). We were then allowed to climb all over them. I am glad they are wanting to protect their heritage and historic sites

Structure is probably prone to damage, even for a hundred dollars so many people would do it that I’m sure damage and wear would build up quick. Also it’s sacred and the descendants of the people who built it still own it

Climbed that on honeymoon in 2003. They had a rope down the center and an ambulance you could see close by. We also saw a dude run up and down those steps like an idiot. No wonder they closed it.

Back when i visited rivera maya in 2014, everything was fresh and mostly untouched. The roads were mostly dirt and unpaved, very little resorts and tourist one local told me they had to ban turtle expeditions because people would grab onto them and ride them. Some people just dont care

I climbed it in the year 2000 when it was still allowed and at the very top is the chamber where human sacrifices were made to appease the gods.. it was dark and eerie up there with a very heavy vibe, no lie.
