3:26 My experience is that if the person responding to someone elses loss is religious, they feel free to share "prayers". They always did and do towards me, although I am not religious. But... they also know I hear the intent and their effort, instead of the words which I give my own meaning. So if you are religious and you feel free to express that: always say this. Although I am not religious, I think it is beautiful. Also: if you are spiritual or want to express a spiritual intent besides being religious use the sentence: "I'll light a candle for you".

You'd be GLAD for English prepositions if you ever had to do GERMAN prepositions. I can't remember English prepositions being even HALF as difficult as German ones are now. If you didn't have to always remember what Case is being aplled for every single adjective, noun, verb & preposition I don't think I'd be having so much trouble learning it. I didn't learn German grammar when I was 6. It's not coming easy like 'aussprache' (pronunciation) is.

Different ways of express sympathy when there is a tragic or sad situation, if someone you are close to is going through a rough time or a loss... 1. I hope things get better soon. (for every situation) 2. I hope you feel better. (for illnesd but not any chronic illness) 3. I am sorry for your loss. (for personal tragedy or death) 4. You are in my thoughts and prayers. (for someone in serious illness, death, personal problem) 5. Please accept my condolences. (specially for death) 6. I am saddened for your loss. (again for death)

@InteractiveEng6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. Sorry, at this point we're not offering any private lessons. However, a great way to practice speaking on your own, especially for the IELTS, is to record yourself talking about a topic. Afterwards, watch the video and evaluate your own speaking skills and consider these questions. Are you able to speak continuously? Are there many awkward pauses? Do you use good eye contact? Are you talking about events in logical order? 😃👍

In ENGLISH? I'm surprise they DO have words in English that "help." Sorry, but I lost someone in my family on September 11. I was told by grief counselors to say "I'm not doing well. Thanks for asking." Then move on so they know you're not going to take up large amounts of their time making them feel uncomfortable. I tried it once, and it did work, but most of the time I can't mention it. You get treated as if YOU'RE the one who made all this happen. I'm hypersensitive to how people have treated us. Some of their words have left all kind of words to be desired, but not heard yet. I actually wish I'd heard more of THESE ways of expressing sympathy. I won't repeat some of what we heard. Almost none of it was included in the video.

Actually, have the courage and sincerity enough to promise your prayers to the person you are comforting - regardless of whether the person in mourning is religious or not. Why would you offer the comfort of the Almighty only to a believer but something inferior to someone who does not believe? Are you scared to profess a heartfelt concern for an unbelieving person just because he doesn't share your faith? That's soft and dishonest.
