This comment will be a little biased (as I am left-leaning) but I think that one of the reasons people tend to dislike conservatives is because they come off as self-centered people that entrust god with everything and don't really care to listen and analyze other people's ideals. In order to achieve equality we can't ignore that there are such differences. We need to realize these disparities exist and try to work together in order to fix them. We can't ignore the differences between black and white people, between men and women and between LGBT members and straight people. We need to acknowledge these differences and do everything we can to make sure everyone can live the life they wish and that they aren't discriminated for it. That is why we aren't going anywhere with either communism or fascism. We need to find a good balance to make things work. I know it is easier said then done, but we need to start small and grow from there.

In Europe "Liberal" means economic liberal, and is generally considered centrist or centre-right. They support unregulated free economies while also being liberal in social issues. So similar to American Libertarians, but not as crazy, and more grounded in their ideology. The Left-wing in Europe is known as "Social Democracy". They grew from the laboyur movement and support labour unions, and today they support Government programs to address issues, regulation of the Capitalist economy and are generally Progressive in social issues.

+OneManArmy Not necessarily. In Britain we have the Liberal Democrats, and whilst the Liberal party before the merger were considered on the economic right, a 'brand' of Liberalism emerged called Social Liberalism. These believe in social liberty, but economic regulation in favour of personal and consumer rights. The Liberal Democrats sit both sides of the economic spectrum, but since Tim Farron took over as leader, it's fair to say we're a centre-left party now. So I identify as a Liberal, and am on the left of the economic spectrum, but I wouldn't identify as a Liberal in the American sense.
@sayuas42939 жыл бұрын
+OneManArmy However, like in American politics, most of the time they don't actually follow their ideologies and instead do whatever they need to to stay in power. Europe has different kinds of left and right-wing too. There is a high diversity of political parties compared to the US.

+OneManArmy Same case in Australia where our far left party is The Greens, centre-left the Labour Party (American Liberal) as well as minor parties on that side like the Liberal Democrats and with the right of center being held by the Coalition which is a consortium of the Liberal Party and the National Democrats. We also have/had the party Palmer United Party but no one really knows what the fuck they stand for as it essentially fell apart after it won a balance of 6 seats out of 33 in the Senate (essentially holding the balance of power votes). And our election system is very different to the American version, i believe most EU and the UK have a similar preferential system to that used here in Aus

This indicates that the issue of sexual attraction to children may very well be one borne of human mental illness in a significant number of individuals often mistakenly deemed as irreversibly and inherently evil by society.

Social democracy could be your game Do you think capitalism is *really* bad for people? You could always try socialism Do you hate capitalism and also hate the state? You could go for libertarian socialism (which is actually where the term libertarian originated as a political ideology) You can have markets without capitalism, you can have markets without the state, you can have capitalism without the state, you could have a strong state and heavy capitalism, you could have capitalism intertwined with the state! That's not even to get into the social aspects of different positions I mean you've got fascists, anarchists, ancaps, Leninists, syndicalists, populists, progressives, reactionaries, the list goes on. @TheClassicalSauce9 жыл бұрын
+SirVolcy Because you have to limit freedom to create equality. Some people don't want a bunch of people with guns telling them what to do and how to think and what is right and wrong. True freedom is the freedom to succeed or fail on your own merit. Conservatives don't blame people when they fail, they blame themselves and try again. Liberals blame other people, and cry about how life isn't fair, so they get the guys with guns to force everyone to value them. That's not freedom, that's state slavery. If everyone is equal, everyone is poor. See the USSR, China, any other far left nation, etc.
@MrOplef9 жыл бұрын
+TheClassicalSauce There are different kinds of equality. I believe in equality of opportunity and equality under the eyes of the law, but trying to force equality on gender and race is a fever dream. I am against quotas for minorities and women because to me that is extremely racist and sexist; having lower standards for them doesn't make them more equal it's just condescending as fuck. I believe people should be judged based on the content on their character, skills, and achievements.
@VolcyThoughts9 жыл бұрын
TheClassicalSauce that's actually false. You don't not have to limit freedom to create equality. When liberals talk about equality, what usually is meant is equality of opportunity, socially, and under the law. We clearly do not have that. I do admit that some legislation is misguided in an attempt to fix this, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't do anything. If a person fails on their own merit, they failed on their own merit. Everyone knows that life isn't fair. However the big issue with conservative boot strap theory is that they forget that some people don't have boots in the first place.

@TheInevitableX9 жыл бұрын
+benaldo138 It certainly depends, you do have those "Constitutionalists" who principally are Conservative [i.e., supporting positions ubiquitously coined 'Conservative' - economic liberalism, weak federal governance, parochial power etc.] Though I wouldn't generalize, Libertarians in a American context is a very muddled label [frankly all over the world] as you have demonstrated. To start you have 'Anarcho-Capitalists', these "Libertarians" are more _extreme_ if you will than Moderate Right-Wing Libertarians such as Rand Paul. And far more "radical" than 'Fiscal Conservatives' . On the "left" you have an ample amount of "Libertarians", like for example: "Libertarian Marxists", "Anarcho-Communist", "Anarcho-Syndicalist" and "Libertarian Socialists". Similar to those on the "right" these individuals desire an enfeeble government, and/or total abolition of the state. All of these people are described as "Ultra-Left", "Radicals" or "Revolutionaries". Now if I omitted some labels I do apologize, and if I was ostensibly unfair to either "right" or the "left" I apologize. P.S: I personally view Nazism as 'Ultra-Right-wing', Hitler described Nazism as "syncretic". Clearly Socialism is universally associated with the "Left", however within the context of Nazism, Socialism was relegated . Nazi Germany did not attempt to implement Socialism, Hitler and his inner circle coupled with the Capitalists, domestically and abroad. So if anything Hitler, though opposing Capitalism himself, could be described as left-wing economically, but socially his was very much an 'Ultra-Rightist'. And his social views had a preponderance within his regime. P.S (2): Also radicalism and extremism isn't appalling in it of itself, some ideas that may be produced from these _extremists_ leanings may work, they just happen to be out of the mainstream. That goes for the "left" and the "right". P.S (3): Also regarding the "Left" libertarians some of the labels are often conflated and arguably they could be reasonably done so. But they do have their unique quarks and distinctions. [Edit (1): P.S (4): Regarding 'Moderate' Right-Wing Libertarians such as Rand Paul, these people are 'Libertarian Statist' or more congruently 'Libertarian Minarchist'.]

I identify as liberal however I also have many conservative ideals. I do support family, tradition, morals, even religion. I am against the form of conservatism which manifests as white american nationalism, war mongering and so forth. Those conservatives are an embarrassment. I do believe in multiculturalism and support negotiating peace with other nations, only relying on military force should there be a clear and imminent threat to this country. Stay out of conflicts which don't concern us. I believe that for a healthy society we need to embrace our home but also be prepared to reform it, should something not work properly.

As someone who's dipped into a bit of political science before, I have issue with how Americentric this video is. Liberalism in general means supporting individual freedoms and largely being against government control over it's peoples (think classical/social liberals), and conservatism in general means being supportive or protective of older traditions and values.
@Ricky911_5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it doesn't make much sense to me either. A liberal is supposed to be someone who's open to new ideas while a conservative is supposed to be someone who's more into keeping traditional values. I guess both sides kind of adopted which one suited them the most. Calling a right-winger a Republican and a left-winger a Democrat isn't technically right but whatever, it's 2019 I guess lol
@tonystark87575 жыл бұрын
It's weird in America because here our founding values are Liberalism, and thus are, in a way, the older traditions and values now for our society. We have a trend of very slowly increasing government control throughout our existence, and the more we increase government control, the more we risk pushing away from classic Liberalism, making classical liberals react conservatively against increases of power. This is not to say that all conservatives are classic liberals or that people in the modern day left cannot be classical liberals, simply that as we move towards more government, where classical Liberalism falls on the range of common ideologies shifts more and more to the conservative side since Liberalism is our old traditional ideology in America.
@koushiro865 жыл бұрын
The entire series is about American government, it's Americentric by definition. If you saw the Party Systems video, you'd know the Gilded Age and the Great Depression kinda together inform the progressive/liberal movement in America - good government reforms, the trend towards protection of rights of minorities and civil liberties, the capability of government to alleviate poverty and direct the rebuilding of society. Conservatism, at least on the social side, is much as you say, though a majority of self-identified conservatives since the Nixon Era have been reactionary authoritarians who support the curtailing of freedom and the crushing of dissent.

There is a difference between a liberal and a leftists...liberals support liberty and free speech while leftists support censorship however the term liberal is often used interchangeable with progressive/leftist. Modern conservatives are not about conserving the status quo as much as they are about conserving our countries foundational conservative values as life, liberty, free speech and limited government True liberals and constitutional conservatives have a lot in common but with different approaches to various issues

I feel like an opportunity was missed to mention the di-axised political spectrum, since Libertarianism was mentioned, and the opposite side being Statism (however I am a bit biased as I'm a libertarian myself). Though, to be frank, not many people openly profess a statist viewpoint because it's been thrown around as a slur by many politicians of today, but there is a growing amount of support for libertarian candidates, like for example Ron Paul, and it would have been nice to at least see some recognition for that, but given that there have been two main viewpoints so far, it's forgiveable.
@ilikegearsofwar39 жыл бұрын
+Suitaloo But there's such a thing as libertarian statism, so it'd have to be defined in a way that is pretty much anarchy, if you want to compare libertarianism it to statism. 1:53 AMERICAN CONSERVATIVES usually support a strong defense. This is one place where we generally don't think spending should be cut. 2:11 This means that we don't like flag burning, and we favor prayer in schools because these reflect traditional religious and patriotic values. 2:21 Many conservatives, as strong adherents to religious faiths, are against abortion. 2:29 The social sphere is where we differ significantly from our libertarian friends who don't see any role for government in people's personal lives. 2:23 This means that libertarians often support things like marijuana legalization that more traditional conservatives do not support. 2:41 If there's one value that American conservatives privilege above others, it's LIBERTY...

I was a far left liberal socialist for years. It was the liberals who convinced me to become a Republican. How? If I point to peer reviewed statistics by the Justice Department showing that blacks aren't being targeted by the police... I'm racist. If I mention that it is possible for a black person to be racist against a white person, I'm racist. If I question flawed studies promoted by the left and want to have an intelligent discussion on them, I'm racist. If I believe in racial equality, I'm racist. If I say I have black friends, clearly, I'm racist. If I'm white on a sunny day, I'm racist (and that last one's not made up either: www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/yes-all-white-people-are-racists-now-lets-do-something-about-it ). What's worse, if you're trying to explain yourself or have a discussion with the left, then you're either "man'splaining" (if male) or have "internalized misogyny" (if female). Saying a woman is attractive is objectification, wishing a woman well is harassment, holding a door open for them is sexism, telling them they're valuable is benign sexism, and the moment any of these stop, it’s due to "privilege". What it means to be democrat or liberal is *NOT* the same thing as it was in JFK's time. These days it's about supporting minorities with a diaper pin (Yes, a literally diaper in - google it I'm not making that up). I'm a transgender lesbian atheist. I'm also a grown woman, and I *DO NOT* need your diaper pin, thank you very much. There's a difference between theory and practice when it comes to political alignment, and that's what brought me over to the right.

When I returned, it was like almost everyone had a new set of values: Feminism wasn’t about having the same opportunities, it was about having perfectly half and half genders in every profession-bonus points for transgender people. I was in favor of free speech and a proportional tax system. But when I returned, people wanted “hate speech” restricted, and “hate speech” includes anything you disagree with. So speech isn’t free. And proportional taxes were actually insufficient, and the wealthy need more taxes than that. What happened? I used to be left-leaning, but now I’m right of center! Yea I'm a conservative and I come from a strongly liberal home as in my uncle said he's moving to Canada if trump wins. I really do think the core values of an individual reflect the outlooks of a society, that the minority even though I am black could be living just as good as white Americans if they had the jobs instead of welfare, that the government shouldn't be involved in all business affairs though companies should be more responsible and caring with their profits, that criminals shouldn't be given any breaks, that the 2nd amendment is important because of the governments existence, that change should come in due time instead of these violent pushes that set back the progress of minorities, that racism should be judged by action not words, and that Trump is better than Hillary simply because of the level of trust. I'm not a racist Uncle Tom I just have individual beliefs that match up with a political party.
@patpatng28 жыл бұрын
Coming from an outsider of US politics, IMO trump cannot be trusted, similar to Hillary, he is an elitist, part of the "establishment". If people believe that Hillary Clinton is dishonest because of her career standing(which I do not), I too would paint Trump as dishonest. I would place Hillary on a level of more honesty than Trump, because hillary is a veteran politician and its just natural that dishonesty is used against her. The allegation towards her IMO just simply do not compromise her capability as a president.

+TM04 Free trade. If I'm free to make my life better, to pursue my own goals and dreams, then I will end up benefiting everyone around me. A very simple example: I plant Carrots and you plant potatoes. Then I suggest we exchange. My carrots for your potatoes. Sounds fair? It may seem like we exchanged 1 for 1. But actually, we both eat better. Now I can focus on planting just Carrots. I become extremely good at it, and so do you with your potatoes, which we'll trade later. But there's only so much we can eat, there's extra production that comes from each of us being exceptional at our Trades, so... We can feed more people, have a bigger familly. All thanks to the human-exclusive ability that we call "trade". Screw opposable thumbs. What makes us really different from other animals is our ability to trade! It's the Invisible Hand. Andrew Carnegie didn't nearly gone bankrupt investing in a new process of making steel because he wanted to push Science forward. He just wanted to make money. J.D. Rockefeller didn't push for the invention of Otto-cycle engines because he was concerned with the possible environmental impacts of oil refining waste products. He wanted to sell what was left after the Kerosene was refined. Gave it the name "gasoline". Henry Ford did not invented the Model T to help his fellow man travel faster. He wanted to make money. As for a society that puts equality before freedom, refer to the Soviet Union. Or if you'd like a recent case study, read about Venezuela.

You should have had a Libertarian clone that just flopped around on the desk, screamed "ROADS ARE THEFT" and then made out with the eagle.

More like the one most likely to just leave you alone. Also, most ideological libertarians are Republican (myself included), not Libertarian, so I'm not sure the capital L is representative of the average American libertarian. And believe it or not, most aren't fixated on the roads. "Who'll build the roads" is more of a liberal go-to question, a tired left-wing FAQ whenever libertarianism comes up. Liberals become obsessed with the roads for some reason whenever a smaller government or Ayn Rand are mentioned.

Hell yeah. I'm surprised how well (most) of the people responded, and how unbiased this video was. As a mostly conservative I really don't trust media to accurately portray my believe. actually have to do a lot of s*** through what I believe in. most people believe that since I'm a conservative I believe that all gays should have no rights and then there should be no government intervention with in economics. I just looked at what I'm replying to and I realize that this comment has no relevancy.

The way I see it, the republicans, libertarians, constitutionalists, ect. are all sects of conservatism. Republicans are socially mixed (i.e. pro-regulation for some things and anti-regulation for other things) and fiscally conservative. Libertarians are socially liberal and economically conservative. Constitutionalists are economically and socially conservative.

Better to say Leftist than liberal. A true classical liberal believes in the Rule of Law, Free Markets, and Individual Freedom.

Another predictor is personality. Some people just naturally lean liberal, resent inequities, and are more care-oriented, while others are more survival- and continuity-oriented in their view of society and will lean more conservative.
