In light of riots and counter-protests taking place, Conservative Party leadership candidate said that it is 'wrong' to chant Allahu Akbar 'without being arrested'.
In reference to the comments, Labour MP Afzal Khan expresses to Tom that 'the use of language has consequences'.
Caller Laila says she's 'sick and tired of pandering to ignorance', and Ned says that Robert Jenrick is an 'idiot’.
Muslim politicians have accused the Conservative MP of "nasty divisive rhetoric" and "textbook Islamophobia" for his comments about the Arabic phrase meaning God is great.
Mr Jenrick was speaking about claims that far-right riots over the last week have been dealt with more harshly than other recent unrest, pointing to the policing of pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the capital.

Yes it’s the context that’s important. Whether you’ve just hit the jackpot or whether you’ve gathered as vigilantes in the middle of the night. I’m against moderating speech in general. But there will always be situations where lines are being crossed. Shouting Allahu Akbar or hallelujah or ‘praise the Lord’ shouldn’t be censored in and of themselves. That’s where context is important.

The rough translation of 'jihad' is struggle, and the rough translation of intifada is 'shaking off'. When these words are spoken in a particular context, they have a particular meaning that is more or less taken for granted by the surrounding audience. When you are speaking in the context of a protest against Israeli oppression, you are self-evidently not speaking in the same context as in a prayer meeting in the House of Commons. In my view,, protestors should have been arrested when calling for 'jihad' or an 'intifada', as they were transparently not calling for 'struggle' or 'shaking off oppression' but instead basically for 'violent resistance'. Words assume meaning in a particular context, and you have to be sensitive to this. Do the protestors not have the intelligence to grasp the unfortunate contemporary connotations of 'jihad', 'intifada', and 'Allahu Akbar' and act accordingly?
