Thanks for sharing your adventures and your haul. I will say being a Westerner, being a woman, and in my case a Black woman.. negotiating with men in other very patriarchal countries was very daunting. They typically are not used to women standing up to them or even challenging them. I felt it in Sri Lanka and India. The women did all the work but the men did all the negotiating and took the money. I'm glad you really like your pieces and have some possible solutions.

Hi there - Moroccan follower here. Re: your jewelry, for future reference jewelry in Morocco is typically 18 carat not 14. So if that happens again, be on the lookout. The other thing I wanted to flag is if the rings are solid silver, they aren't costume. You should see a stamp on the inside that should read 900. Final point, assuming that the ring is solid silver, putting a thin layer of gold on it makes it automatically vermeil. Happy shopping!

Not quite true on the gold vermeil point. Gold plating is actually a thinner layer of gold and tends to fade quicker. Thanks for the tips!

@Politics & Fashion not quite to your not quite. Gold plating is done on brass or lesser metals, not silver, which is a precious metal. The thickness of the gold came later as a way to regulate the industry, but historically, vermeil is just gold on solid silver. Happy shopping!

@@123alicat1 I only buy gold plated sterling silver and it is sold and described by Nordstrom, Macys, Bloomingdales etc…as “gold plated sterling silver.” It’s rarely described as vermeil in my purchases.

Most jewelers can gold plate jewelry. There is a problem when stones are involved. They can remove and reset the stones in most cases, probably at an additional cost. Good luck. The rings are stunning.

you can try to clean it with hot water baking soda and lime or vinegar in something aluminum leave it for it 15 mins and scrub it with a whitening toothpaste

We have carpets from Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Indian, some of our rugs are worth over 25K dollars but their silk on silk rugs. We have about 15 different rugs. Their more intricate in design but yours is a nice start. We had a similar experience in San Francisco with carpets but lets just say thank goodness for American Express cause that mug got sent back with a quickness and the money was refunded. They tried to negotiate a better price but after they tried to stick us for 20K we were done, done

Hi, as someone that works for a jewellery manufacturing company I though I might be able to help with the rings. If the plating came off so easily is most likely "flash plating" which is the cheapest way to gold plate an item. If the base metal is sterling silver then re-plating them is a great idea. Vermeil is a good choise. Vermeil plating is plating done on silver at a thickness of over 2.5microns. We usually recommend at least 3 microns for rings due to the daily use or even 5 microns for a thicker layer. Please ask the plating company you plan to use how many microns they use. If the plating is under 2.5 then is not Vermeil. Hope this helps 😊

I've had rings with pave stones replated and they look great. Had it done by a goldsmith for a reasonable price. The replating ended up being more resilient than the original finish, so well worth it IMO.

I was in Morocco the week before you... I went into that jewellery shop with my mum and I fell in love with some pearl gold encased earring but decided not to buy. I remember seeing the rings you bought. Such a pity as that store visually looks amazing! I'm so suprised that the gold was plated. I was quoted really high prices for the pieces I wanted so changed my mind and bought antique jewellery instead.

That’s interesting, I was a gold girl all my life until I got about in my 40’s and I changed like you switch from cold water to hot water; my eyes would only gleam if my jewelry was silver.

You don't have to explain why you didn't know that the rings weren't solid gold. If the person/store selling the items say it is solid gold, there shouldn't be any reason to think otherwise. Most jewelers do gold plating. I am sure you'll be able to find many in the DMV.

I went to Tangier a few years ago with friends for a few days: my friends husband is from there. He negotiated everything because there is the tourist price and the local price. We had a great time but it’s different and they can be aggressive. Perhaps Marrakesh is different - I still want to go there but Tangier is probably not as Westernize even though it’s close to Spain.

The museum is less traffic than the gardens so you may be able to get tickets at the door. However, I'd recommend getting tickets to both in advance.

Exactly you needed to be careful if you would have had someone trusted with you that speaks the language this could have been prevented. And you paid to much for the carpet. My husband shopped all the time he’s from Morocco I’ve gotten my wedding ring from there beautiful gold diamond ring the real thing 😊and a second silver wedding ring few years later still beautiful 😊
