La Callas chante tout de même le contre Ré final ,malgré l'État relativement précaire de sa voix à cette époque .Et cela est un exploit qu'elle relève avec beaucoup de courage .Elle ne se dérobe pas ,ce n'est pas dans sa nature !! Une grande Diva en somme .

Stamani, sentendo in TV MARIA DI RUDENZ di Donizetti, ho sentito questo stupendo tema del sestetto, quasi uguale. Li per li non mi ricordavo in quale opera di Donizetti l'avevo già sentito, ma poi sono andato a controllare e infatti è proprio lo stesso del Poliuto. Autoplagio? Niente di male per un compositore di questo livello che è stato "costretto" a comporre più di 60 opere. D'altra parte il brano si adatta perfettamente alla situazione scenica di entrambe le opere e poi pensiamo che anche Rossini faceva queste trasposizioni. L'ouverture del BARBIERE è la stessa di ELISABETTA regina d'Inghilterra. Comunque questo di Donizetti è un tema stupendo che solo un genio poteva comporre,

I can well understand the fascination that Callas's expressive singing here has for many, but the greatest achievement here, to me, is what Corelli does. This Act II finale, even more than Poliuto's cabaletta, demands the most heroic vocal persona required anywhere in this role. It's in fact the ten most heroic minutes of vocal writing that Corelli ever performed on stage, and he rises to the challenge with ringing highs and a louring ample middle for Poliuto's jealousy.

Bravissimi tutti! Gaetano Donizetti, (1797-1848) fu un grande "ex natura" talento. Pur vivendo in un ambiente musicale, dimostrò le sue abilità artistiche da molto giovane. Suo fratello fu direttore dei congiunti strumentali del sultan turco, mentre suo nipote ,Franz von Suppé (cav. Demelli) ,divenne il compositore,il più produttivo del "vaudeville" austriaco. Donizetti, uno straordinario 'inventore' di melodie, preparò, senza dubbio la strada per G. Verdi. Adesso, è più che ovvio che il "maestoso" dal irraggiungibile pezzo concertato e finale IIo di "Poliuto", somiglia molto alla "scena trionfale" dall' atto 2o di "Aida",('gloria all'Egitto'), la quale fu scritta quasi 30 anni dopo!(1869-71). Anche la melodia del duetto-finale, " il suon delle arpe angeliche", sostanzialmente, fu utilizzata da Verdi nel 1o atto della "Forza del destino".(duetto Leonora-Alvaro:"'seguirti fino agli ultimi confini della terra"). La versione francese di "Poliuto", fu rappresentata sotto il titolo "I martiri".

There were also 3 performances of this opera that Callas didn't sing. So Corelli and Bastianini sang them with Leyla Gencer...Sadly, no recording exists of any of these evenings But Corelli stated in interviews that at the end of this scene he and Gencer took the High D together....

I've heard a great numbers of Corelli's live performances and believe his performance in this Poliuto was his greatest. Perhaps it's the greatest performance by any tenor in the history of audio recordings. The only performance close to it is Bjorling's 1945 Met radio matinee of Romeo and Julliette, that was his first run of Met performances after WWII; or Melchior's 1937 Covent Garden Tristan. But neither of the latter two matched the excitement and sheer vitality of Corelli's Poliuto.

Si bien es cierto que la Callas aquí presentaba fallas vocales, no es dable negar que la magia de hacer tridimensional cada palabra y transmitir el sentimiento se ha acrecentado. Franco y Ettore maravillosos, pero ella llega al alma, su dolor vocal queda en la memoria y podemos escuchar a lo mejor vives plenas cantando esto, pero ninguna dará lo que esa mujer dio a la humanidad. Viva Callas. Por favor que nadie señalé nunca más que le falta a su voz, todo lo contrario su voz lo tiene todo.

You're 110% right. I've already mentioned in a comment I have posted 7 months ago, how G. Verdi had used 2 themes from "Poliuto" in 'La forza del destino' & 'Aida', respectfully. Ealier in 1842, when he was working on 'Nabucco''s 1st act finale, he had borrowed (quasi "copied") a theme (allegro agitato), from Donizetti's masterwork "Lucia di Lamermoor": It is the pezzo concertato & amazing finale of the 2nd act!
