WONDERFUL STUFF! Really brings me back! Recalling when there were live organists at skating rinks... truly talented organists who were "unsung heroes" made the atmosphere come alive! Long live the polkas & the organists who dazzle us! :D

I don’t often wish I’d lived in a different era, but going to rinks in the late 70s “disco era”, this would have been cool to experience.

Great. It reminded me of my friend organist Leon Berry and his pipe organ in his basement.

A little known fact about CONN Organs. They were one of the few organ manufacturers that used Independent tone generation for each note on the organ which is why the Sound of a CONN Organ is so rich and majestic sounding. The only other organ manufacturer to use this method is Allen. Conn organs will always be the Cadillac of organs, especially in the 500-600 series. They made a magnificent instrument. My CONN is my pride and joy and will take care of it forever. One of the greatest joys is playing a CONN Organ.

They were made in the town that I was raised in. Madison, IN (my sister used to work for them)!

I must agree about the Sound Quality and how its so rich and full, I am the Proud Owner of an old Vacuum tube powered 1956 CONN # 645 Deluxe Theater Organ and the smooth deep, hearty sound is perfection at it's finest. And...if i remember right, behind the back board are at least 120 individual Vacuum Tubes that give such a rich feel and tons of heat!!! Not to mention a generously large Internal Leslie Speaker and a whole Percussion Section as well.

I agree, I have a Conn 652 and am endeavoring to keep it going by collecting spare boards for the organ. I am an electronics tech as well as an amateur organist , both of several decades. I am slowly going through the instrument refurbishing all the electronics. I tune the organ once annually. I have owned a 651 and that was a great organ as well but even though the 652 is more complex it is capable of more variety of stops than the 650 or the 651. I would like an Allen 311 but lack the funds an instrument like that would require. Also any repair required of an Allen is fraught with difficulty as Allen keep circuit details fairly secret even on older instruments.

The 645 was made in 1966, I refurbished one several years ago, the percussion was not so good on this instrument being as it is older technology using germanium transistors prone to failure.

I have a cassette recording of me playing the Conn Artist organ in church. I think it sounds much better than the Rodgers that replaced it. It had a very rich tone quality, almost like a pipe organ.

Thanks for the advice regarding the spares.I have acquired a 651 in aboslute prisitine condition which Iam thoroughly enjoying.The sound of these organs are magnificent and Iam thoroughly enjoying mine.I believe that there is only 1 other one in South Africa.. Iam proud to have become a Conn organ owner and can now appreciate why one would want to own one of these organs

Agreed, Richard White. My dad had a Conn 650 in our house when I was a kid and it sounded fantastic! The only other one that came close as I recall was a large Lowry later on.

Excellent job! I noticed you turning off the tremolos during the solos. Does the 650 not have a solo tremolo kill switch to the left of the general pedal? (My 651 does, I'm just curious).
@johnferguson40895 жыл бұрын
No, the 650 doesn't have a tremolo kill switch although it could easily be fitted.
@mj69626 жыл бұрын
Were you using extra percussion that wasn’t done live on the manuals of this organ? I heard some of the organ’s traditional drum and cymbal sounds, but some of them sounded much better. ?? Just curious since I have the same model. Thanks!!

Many, many vacuum tubes inside, it uses A LOT of power (electricity) when it's on and makes a lot of heat. My late dad had a 652 when I was a kid and he had to have an electrician run a separate electric circuit just to operate that organ.
