The greatest interpretation of the greatest of all piano works, the one that set the stage for Chopin and Liszt and everything else that came afterward. Yes I'm talking about you Berg and Bartok. I was a bit indifferent to Pollini and his powerful technique and fast tempos until I heard his recording of Diabelli. Now I'm convinced he comes from God. Thanks for posting.

This video was uploaded 16 years ago, so this might easily be the first video of Pollini that was uploaded on KZbin!

@anisometropie I respect your opinion (BACH IS BACH) but for me, Diabelli variations is the greatest work of all time in the piano repertorie! Ok, of course this is my opinion! I LOVE BACH, I LOVE MOZART, I LOVE BEETHOVEN.

it's supposed to be sudden, and i'm pretty sure that suddenness, like a door slamming in someone's face, is what Beethoven intended. i suspect that Beethoven's radicalism is underestimated by the previously mentioned pianists. if there's a rit here, why isn't it in the score?

The comments here, in general, are refreshingly thoughtful - in marked contrast to the average mindless drivel that people spew out on KZbin.

32: je préfère de loin le tempo de Yudina (mais elle ne le maintient pas dans la 2° partie); Boone version desservie par une prise de son exécrable Pourquoi un do à 0'46 ? 33: bien dans l'esprit.

To discover the real Beethoven , listen to Schnabel (same part of the Diabelli) . Pollini is a nice child . . .

If you listen to the live recording of Pollini playing Hammerklavier from 1989 in Salzburg (which is on KZbin), you might change your mind about that. The third and fourth movements are particularly moving and powerful.

I guess not. I think he's covered with flowers for his enormous talent... And I don't think he was 30 less. Maybe 15 or 20.

Why oh why does every pianist insert that utterly wrong (and unscored) ritardando at the end of the fast section of the #32 fugue right before the coda? There's no way that's what Beethoven intended - hence he didn't include it in the score - and it misses what he was really trying to do there, which was to basically slam the door in the fugue's face To be fair to Pollini, Brendel and Barenboim do this too, and it's just so wrong

Probably great, but way too deep for me. You really need, I think, a functioning brain and years of listening experience to penetrate this kind of complexity and structure. Yet I can fathom most Rach, Tchaik, Scriabin, and even Brahms with only 10 years' effort. Marvelous, thanks.

As for Diabelli, I don't know anything that even comes close to Anderszewski's interpretation with all due respect to Pollini.
