POLO- I was there! ❤ As a blown away 16 year old! ❤ Janis idolized Bessie Smith. She even bought her a truly befitting headstone for her grave. She also studied Tina Turner, Aretha and Otis Redding. I also saw Otis at the same festival- a major highlight of my musical life! ❤ To see happy dancing funky Janis, check her out with Tom Jones performing “ Raise Your Hand”.

The story behind the film of this performance from the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 is as incredible as the performance itself. One of my favorites. I recommend Try (Just A Little Bit Harder) This is one of Janis Joplin's best studio tracks. Try (Just A Little Bit Harder) proves that she was as much of a powerhouse and force of nature while being constrained by her producer in a studio, as she was on the stage where she could just let loose. It is one of my favorite tracks of hers, and I hope you give it a listen.

About the 'crazy drunk lady' observation, I think I know what you mean. Joe Cocker and some others from the same era do it too. It's having the freedom or the courage to lose yourself in the performance. The leg spasms, arm spasms, facial ticks - rather than trying to control all that energy, or hide it, the artist lets it fly. It's then that you see greatness. Not *because* of the odd movements, but because you know those movements reveal that the artist is completely losing him or herself 'in the moment', they are holding *nothing* back . It's not polished, it's raw. And raw is real. The essence of a truly live performance, where anything could happen. And that is why it is so electrifying, and riveting, to watch 😎

Janis Joplin would drink a fifth of whiskey sometimes before going on stage. So, yes, she does look drunk, like that hotel parking lot prophet screaming her pain to an empty heaven. But she made it a thing of beauty that reaches deep and touches us in the greatest pleasure center of them all, our souls. She was and is a worldwide treasure.

You know, I think a genius performer like Janis could sing a rubber ducky song and it would be fabulous.
@hog72037 ай бұрын
You said it perfectly, she was something else. Trying to explain Janis's singing to a person who's never heard her before, is impossible. She does have that thing like James Brown, a kind of controlled chaos that sets them apart from everyone else. Hendrix is like that Imo. His guitar playing was sorta sloppy and crazy sometimes but it worked. I don't think you can't really teach that. It's natural for artists like them. If you're picky about blues singers, listen to Buddy Guy if you haven't. He's probably more famous for his guitar playing, but I love his voice. It sort of mirrors the way he his guitar playing sounds.

Yes! About the blues. I can't listen to pure blues. I mean, there's a difference. Like, I'm not into SRV, or BB King...respect they were hella talented. But the blues I like tends to be blended with rock or R&B, or even ctry, like ppl like Patsy Cline or Chris Stapleton. For blues I tend to go with The Animals, The Doors, Janis, even Hendrix! 'Hey Joe' def got a blues flavor..🤘 basically all the great bands or singers influenced by the original blues artists. They gifted ALL OF US. ❤
