This was cathartic for Lennon, he had been searching through spiritualism, various therapies. This song practices Primal Scream Therapy , remember how constricted conventional society was as he grew up. Men were not ever allowed to be vulnerable, we were all supposed to buck up and get on with life.

John was raised by his Aunt Mimi, his mother Julia had given him up as his father had left the family. His mother was killed by automobile when he was young. He did have a relationship building with his mother - she taught him some chords he used on the guitar. He was into scream therapy at the time he wrote this song. He had felt abandoned by his mother and father, and her young death took her away from him when things were developing in their relationship.

I am so sorry to hear that you, too, did not have your parents in your life and that this was part of your background as well. Hard to say this, and maybe really hard to hear, but it gives you an amazing insight into this song. John Lennon and Paul McCartney both lost their mothers at a young age. But the way they dealt with it was quite different. Whereas Paul would always put on a brave face, John just poured out the emotion. I suspect it was one of their deepest bonds in their musical collaboration in the Beatles, and in their friendship in general. Plus this terrible emotional pain, I suspect, drove both of them deeply into their songwriting and music as a way to attempt to deal with this pain that really never really goes away.

Three of the Beatles had absent abs/or dead parents. John essentially lost both as a teenager, although his care had been shifted to his aunt when he was younger. It’s hard to imagine how he wouldn’t have felt unwanted when neither of his parents were parental and then one suddenly was killed.

And because Paul McCartney could see how John's abandonment was affecting young Julian, he wrote "Hey Jude" for him. Jude was the nickname Paul always used for Julian, and he would spend time with him when he could.

John's mother died when he was young. His father left prior to that. John went to a therapy called "Primal Scream Therapy" and one of the biggest things he had not resolved was the feelings about his parents, hence why he is screaming. Another great song to check out is "Cold Turkey" which he wrote about when him and Yoko had a brief sting with heroin. Another song to check out is "Bloody Sunday" which is about the horrors the English soldiers are guilty of doing the the Irish Republicans in Northern Ireland. And because of these atrocities- John gave back his MBE. Another great one is "Grow Old Along With Me" which depicts the love he had for Yoko. I can talk about John forever, he is my favorite Beatle. My mom used to sing me Beatle songs when she was pregnant with me, and she said when she would sing them, I would move around a lot.

VERY sincere! Lennon shared his journey thru therapies with us on that album. He was big into some of the popular psych therapies of the day, and as he started to let out his pain and frustration he wrote about it and shared it with us. I loved the album as a kid when it came out but my parents (who always “had to” listen to whatever music I was playing upstairs) didn’t like this album much because of his pain and suffering coming thru in a totally dominating way. Today, all these years and decades later, I totally get their reaction to it. But then, we’ve learned so much more about Lennox’s early life and life at that time, that I am now acutely aware what that poor little boy went thru emotionally, and it does in fact CAUSE PAIN. It’s not touching, it’s messy and quite pitiful actually.

John's dad left he and his mother when John was a baby, causing his mom to be viewed as "A woman with loose morals", since her husband left. This caused John to be raised by his aunt Mimi, someone more "suitable" by society. One night, after his mother Julia, left Mimi's house after a visit, she was run over by a drunken off duty police officer, and killed, almost right in front of their home. 2 years earlier, when Paul was 14 and John was still 16, Paul's mother died of cancer. This bond of both boys losing their mothers, is what tied the two together subliminally.
