This is insane. I've used 3ds Max off and on since I was about 12-13, and I wouldn't consider myself a master because I've yet to do a quality head, though I've made a body that's at least solid. This past year, I've dedicated myself to it, and have learned alot, but this video has taught me alot too and I want to try my hand at edge modeling something like this (I usually do subdivision, though I've edge modeled clothes and such). I've never played with soft selection or FFDs though I was aware of them, and can't wait to try this variety of new workflow ideas and tools out once I learn more about face anatomy and topology in particular. I'm more commenting to say I like your content and you inspire me. Alot.

I'm still wondering whether to pursue sculpting or modeling. Just started sculpting a couple of days ago and I learned pretty much all the tools for it but I find sculpting is hard to control & it's difficult to make a figure that I already had in mind from the start (especially without a tablet). Modeling seems to give a lot of precision and allow you to build a figure that you know faster but I'm not very familiar with the tools yet (& don't really feel like learning right now...) If I understand human anatomy (to a certain degree) & I wanna make specific characters instead of sculpt blindly to find inspiration, is modeling better than sculpting?
@LuisEstrada3D9 жыл бұрын
tubester358 Well, I think sculpt is more easy than modeling in max, but the modeling poly by poly is nice for learn the good topology for animations or videogames, if you want modeling fast with poly by poly, you need a lot of practice and then you need sculpt for make the more small details. I recomend you start with sculpt but you can try with the two forms.
@tubester3589 жыл бұрын
I see, thanks! I'm using Blender. If I may ask, should UV unwrapping come before the small details or after u finish the model or anytime? (Too much topology is hard to unwrap nicely :/) Do I need to retopologize the high-polygon sculpted figure first? (I have no idea how yet)
@LuisEstrada3D9 жыл бұрын
tubester358 My model has the polygons with smooth mesh (all the softwares 3d has one I dont know how is his name in blender ), when you make a model you use a mesh simple and you assign the meshsmooth, you make the unwrapping over the model without smooth, and depends. if you make a lot of changes in the model with sculpture you need adequate the mesh low poly to the high poly, and correct the uv map. I hope you understand me. If you make a sculture model from the beginning, you need retopologize the model, this model (create other model from the high poly) and mapping this, next you make the projection (create the textures with the details of high poly for the lowpoly) like this (it is an old video the mesh is not very good ) kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6rJcq1-fLKHecU
@tubester3589 жыл бұрын
Luis Estrada Wow, thanks for taking the time to reply to me, man. You've been helpful. I'll try to learn the necessary tools in Blender (& try learning some 3Ds max later.) I think you should make your videos/work easier to find; add description, use tags & share them :)

That's amaizing! But I have a question: I imagened it to myself as creating of basic model in with mesh in cells or in Zbrush and then doing retopology via 3Ds max, but you've just done it without base model/Zbrush model... So the question is: Do you just prefer straight forward modeling with correct topology and do it because you can handle it? Or do you prefer doing retopology of ZBrush model... but in this video you've decided o show another way of modeling face? Basicaly... what made you to model this masterpiece in the way you've done it? //Just someone who want to learn. :)
@LuisEstrada3D9 жыл бұрын
Denis Dem This modeling is like old school, you can make this or use zbrush. I can export this model to zbrush and make more details and use the same mesh and dont need retopology. any method you use, what matters is to feel comfortable with it
