in brief: In this video, the speaker discusses her polyglot language learning routine and shares her core philosophy for language learning. She presents a pyramid consisting of core practice, supplemental practice, and serendipity. 1. Core Practice: This is the daily practice that should be easy enough to integrate into your routine but still challenging. Be honest with yourself about what you enjoy most about language learning and how much time you have. The speaker's core practice revolves around learning vocabulary for multiple languages, which she does by watching KZbin videos and noting down unfamiliar words. 2. Supplemental Practice: This includes activities done out of curiosity, such as reading books, watching videos without taking notes, listening to music, or striking up conversations with native speakers. Supplemental practice helps with pronunciation, exposure, and reinforcing vocabulary. 3. Serendipity: These are the lucky events or encounters with native speakers that provide language practice, but you shouldn't rely on them. The speaker emphasizes the importance of finding your sweet spot in terms of practice and being consistent and sustainable in your language learning journey. She believes that education is a choice, and mastering a skill requires intrinsic motivation and practice on your own.

l recently started using English, a language l've been learning for 1 year and a half, to study French. l'm using a method a Brazillian teacher 'created', he's called Mairo Vergara. It basically consists of getting some material with audio and a transcript and studying the written form of the material and after just listening to it until you get to a point where you can understand 80%-90% of that certain material, whether you're listening or reading it. That technique is fundamentally the Lingq system Steve Kaufman created. In my opinion, that is the most effective method for getting the nuts and bolts quickly and then getting into material you really enjoy.

My routine is to view language like a sculpture rather than a subject to master. To study is to chisel the marble: the vision of fluency inside the “block” of difficulty is the flame that fuels my persistence. I look at Italian Renaissance painters and I marvel at the detail, the veins on the hands or the wrinkles on the forehead. I aspire to such mastery and view the small “veins” of pronunciation or the “wrinkles” of correct spelling as moments to imitate the giants before me. When I view language as art it is not so much a matter of being “good” or “bad”, it is a process, the unfinished block of choppy grammar, bad pronunciation and limited vocabulary is just that, “unfinished”. Every time I have a language exchange it is a “chisel” on the marble, every time I read an article in my target language it is a “strike” against the form. My routine is to daily “think” about how languages should be viewed because this is what ultimately shapes my habits.

I'll say this: if you wake up one day and don't want to do something you had otherwise have been passionate about your whole life, don't do what this girl says. Passion is not a feeling of desire. It is not the fire that heats the metal, but the hammer which strikes that shapes it. Passion is defined by having the will to do when you want it, but also when you don't. It is to believe in a goal and move towards it even if your own desires would suggest otherwise. Moods are fickle, passion is not. So if you are passionate about languages, and one day you wake up and feel like you don't want to do it anymore, keep pushing for as long as you need to remember why you started this journey in the first place

I agree "it's not how you feel but what you do that counts". The same can be said for many things in life like working out, you may not feel you want to do it, but everyday you decide to do the workout anyway despite that. Then a few weeks later you will notice the improvements which would not have been there if you decided to let your moods and feelings in those moments affect your actions. I also believe doing this creates a positive feedback loop, once you start noticing improvements, you have actual proof that your effort is worth it which can be very motivating. Though all this means nothing if you can honestly find no reason to want to do it and if you realise you really don't care about it, my opinion is in that case the best thing to do is just move on and look for something else that does give you reasons to want to it. Life doesn't need to be stressful, language learning is great and has many benefits but it might not be for you, though I believe that means you have to keep searching for something else that is

weird, that doesnt sound like the definition *an intense desire or enthusiasm for something.* passion is about *DESIRE* not force yourself even if you dont want to do it.
@gawayne13744 жыл бұрын
@@JustinK0 Desire doesn't have to be a physical emotion. You can desire something with your will. Consider the Eros and Agape definitions that the Greeks gave to love. When chasing life goals, I think most people use passion in a more abstract way, like I have. Language has the blessing of being fluid, allowing us to refine words within a specific context to express ideas that otherwise hard to put forward with the conventional meaning. If you have a word that better describes what I am trying to communicate, feel free to share.

I know it's been months since you posted your comment.. But if you still haven't figured out how spaced repetition works, just know that when you study your vocabulary list & you find some words difficult to remember, study them that same day. Then test yourself after 1 week. Then study your vocabulary list after 3 weeks etc. The goal is to test yourself after a certain amount of time to see if those words have been solidified in your brain & your actual vocabulary that you use when you talk. Hope I helped, even though I'm late❤️

My language learning routine: * Tell myself, "I can do this." * Prepare myself mentally by targeting a specific area of interest. * Identify my study material/s. * Make something to eat. * Close my eyes and lie down on the sofa. * Surf the Internet. * Listen to music. * Look at the time: noting that it's getting late. * Get ready for bed. * Start reading or playing the study material. * Fight to stay awake, as my eyes begin to close after only a few minutes. * Kid myself that, "I'll pick up the slack tomorrow," as I drift off into a dejected slumber.

Me too. I lived in the Czech Republic for years and learned Czech this way even though it's "so hard." You eventually memorize words and sentences without understanding what they mean, then look them up, and you have a word in your head for life. It also helped to watch a soap opera and some 90s sitcoms dubbed in Czech, since, besides some of the jokes, the language was pretty simple/useful for everyday life. Then I switched to following political and economic news....

Being in university is such a great place when learning languages. It's not even about the classes but all different people and their cultures which may so happen to be part of the language you're learning. I kick myself all the time for not taking advantage of that when I was taking German, French and Spanish classes. Oh well. This is a good learning philosophy/system. I would say my core is reading and listening which I do for 25 mins a day, everyday. Some days I double up on that. I actually have a chart that tells me what I should do each day as my supplement so that I at least get 75 mins of practice a day. I may need my own youtube channel to explain my routine haha.

Deliniate, nice word choice that you don't often hear. I don't have a structured routine because I am inconsistent. As of last week I began learning portuguese on Memrise. I learn twenty new words daily and aim for at least a half hour on the app, I am onto level 2 but the speed and retention is helped by having reached level 3 in Spanish in the past, so my own studies of temporary states vs permanent and verb conjugations for example mean picking up the early levels of portuguese is not as difficult. But I am inconsistent because I haven't practiced Spanish for maybe 4-6 months. For this moment I am focusing on Portuguese because I want to go. I will improve upon just memrise. For pronunciation I have just got pimsleur. I will use gold lists also, Hello talk. I will build to trying to get 2 hours practice a day minimum but this will evolve as I focus on more than just vocabulary, i.e listening, pronunciation etc. Sounds dumb and nothing special but people like you help encourage others, which is awesome. What quality of yours do I aspire to most. Discipline. I am yet to be disciplined enough but I am working on it. Blah blah long and boring but i just wanted to say something about what your asking. Peace.

@@KarenVanessaBuitrago Wow, thank you so much for caring. I will update if it is of any interest to anyone hahahaa. I am not practicing my spanish at the same time. Even though this is the case Memrise method enabled me to retain a lot permanently for some reason combined with my outside study of especially verb conjugations and sentence structure, states of being, now I am able to read a good amount of spainsh and more often than not have a good idea of what is being said, which is amazing to me because before 2019, I knew zero spanish. Nothing compared to you but I want to connect with as many human hearts as possible so that is a good motivation. I think you are right about routine. Routine is something that I completely lack when it comes to core practice. But with children I find it impossible to find a regular time to sit down and do this. I have tried but am inconsistent. Most of my practice would fall in the middle. II really don't have trouble finding time to expose myself to the languages I practice as over the years it has just become a part of my daily life. Throughout the day I listen to videos in one or multiple languages. In the evening if I have the chance I'll pick up a book or watch a television show in one of my languages, as well, on average I do anywhere from 5-10 hours of online classes a week in the languages I am practicing sometimes even more. Some of these classes are conversational while others are very structured. I also put a lot of energy into teaching my kids a language by teaching them myself as well attending there online classes with them. I like your dedication to your learning routine. 14 words a day? I tried 10 words a day but I was inconsistent. I think this process is very valuable. I need to find a way to start doing something like this consistently too. Great video.

I would generally consider my English not to be very bad. I study the language and have been studying at a boarding school for a certain time. Now I have to say that when I examine your language skills, I see that you think in the language, have totally taken it and subconsciously use it. I would love to get to that point. My English meets the standards of C1 with a tendency towards C2. To gain more fluidity and confidence with the language I would very much like to ask for your advice. Perhaps you can reflect on what has helped you and help you to use English at the level of speaking and writing. Thank you very much, I appreciate it. What I probably need is a bit more time of exposure to the language) My brain and consciousnesses simply need more time to be completely accustomed to the language i am learning. Any advice on how to reach this?

Yes, for sure. I think that the only thing that really got me to the native level was ultimately talking to other people. I know that can be difficult if you don't live in an English speaking country, but I would suggest that the best thing you can do is a list of 10-14 words everyday that you review consistently. I hope this helps!

If you want another notch under your language learning belt, you should definitely add Romanian. That's the easiest way to get to 7 languages. Noobs will be impressed. But if you really want to optimize the language learning process, I recommend learning an FSI level 4 or 5 language. Learning a difficult language will add credibility to your name and ensure that the methods you use are actually effective.

@@uw3904 yup, the first sentence is french and it is what u understood. Then it is spanish but it is worded a bit awkward. I understood they meant "I'm looking forward to watch more of your explanations about language learning". If that's the case it'd have been more natural to say "Estaré viendo más explicaciones tuyas sobre aprender idiomas", which translates to "I'll be watching more of your explanations over language learning" (it's more natural to say aprender idiomas than el aprendizaje de idiomas). We don't really have a good translation of "look forward to", and "ojalá" is used in cases when something is out of your control, for example the weather ("ojalá mañana haga un día bonito" which is roughly wishing tomorrow's weather will benice), but since they are talking about an action that they have to initiate themselves, then you'd word it more as a "I'll do this" rather than expecting you'll do something in the future. Hope I made myself clear, just wanted to contribute a bit to op's comment! :)

I like listening to songs too as a passive practice. I have noticed that I am way better at listening and understanding written word than I am at speaking and writing.

Important part of the speech Method of language learning (from the most important to less important) 1. Core practice 15 min to 3 hours practice based on personal schedule. Her choice is 14 word everyday. Write those word that you don't understand. Start with watching some favored target language videos. 2. Suplemental practice More relaxed type of practice. When you are curious, listening to target language music without writing down the unfamiliar word. Do things that you love (her loved practice is reading) that has a connection to language learning. 3. Serendipitous practice A practice event that has a connection to luckiness. Either a pop up friends chat with your target langauge, or pop up target language advertisement. We can't depend on this type of practice, because this practice based on luckiness. But it's also helpful if you already doing the first and the second method kind of practice

I just want to say that I had a huge smile on my face as I watched this video and enjoyed it from start to finish. First of all, I'm thoroughly impressed with your vocabulary. I'm a native English speaker and am also a vocabulary nerd and it's very rare that I can use the full range of my vocabulary even with native speakers: most of my colleagues will give me blank stares when I use words like "traipse", "saunter", "mirthful", etc. and I'm constantly having to dumb my speech down for most people. You used a ton of impressive words and CORRECTLY. Really inspirational! I just stumbled across your video and am seeing you for the first time, so all I know is that you're not a native English speaker but at this point, I don't even know where you're from or what your native language is. All I can say is that I don't think I've ever met a non-native speaker who has as good a mastery of English vocabulary as you do. I'm thoroughly impressed. I speak eight languages so know a thing or two about language learning, but I don't focus nearly enough on vocabulary as I should and you've inspired me to incorporate some of your techniques - and I don't often learn a lot of new polyglot techniques from others. Plus your core philosophy of learning in general resonates a lot with my own and I loved it that you weren't afraid to get into the deeper mindset stuff here. Kudos to you. We've started an online language learning company where students can find paid teachers because we believe that all serious language learning involves both a self-study component plus a human practice component that self-study can't give you and if you would be interested in any kind of collaboration, please reach out. I can't wait to find out your origin story and see more of your stuff.

Couldn't agree more about finding that sweet spot with your language studies. With Spanish in the beginning I had the false expectation that the more I study the faster I'll learn (which is true in some aspects), so I would spend hours and hours, sometimes enjoying it and sometimes forcing myself, but my schedule would fluctuate because my study schedule was crazy. But over the years I learned what amount of time worked for me (usually 20 minutes of vocab, 50-60 minutes of audio repetition, and 1 hour of conversation with a native speaker a couple times a week), and what was sustainable, and what I can do every single day, which that consistency is whats so important to me.

Hello!! I just want to say I love your channel and i have a question about language learning. I have been loosely studying French, Spanish, Russian, Modern Greek, Brazilian Portuguese, and Arabic but while I excell in my textbook studies I struggle to practice speaking in the beginning stages because forming sentences with correct grammar and vocab is so difficult specifically in ghe bwginning, do you have any advice to get past this? Also, when watch TV or Movies in a target language do you have the subtitles on in your first language or do you keep it in the target language and try to decipher it using body language and social cues? Thank you again so much for all this information!
@KarenVanessaBuitrago4 жыл бұрын
Hi Eliana, so to start forming correct sentences at the beginning, especially when you don’t know what sounds correct and what sounds wrong, I’d learn phrases instead of individual words. For example, if I was learning the verb “to get picked up” I would write down the entire sentence on my Vocab list, so I’d write “Mary got picked up by her father” to understand how to use the verb and with what prepositions. Another thing you can do is ask native speakers. If you can’t get a grasp of any in real life, you can always ask people in Tandem. It’s a great app that allows you to talk people to learn languages. To answer your other question, when I watch tv, I usually use the subtitles in Italian or French. I don’t use subtitles in English or Spanish because using subtitles in the other languages I am learning forces me to learn 2 languages at the same time :) hope this helps and good luck to you learning all those languages. Very impressive!

Maybe to add something regarding the topic: - I like to study a language with a teacher who is speaking a foreign language which I already picked up quite well, e.g. I learn Russian with a teacher speaking english. - another lesson: try to be as active with the content you learn as possible. So In fact: prefer actively watching a movie, making notes or looking up words instead of passively just consuming the content. Basically, try to be proactive. But this is true for everything you learn. Actually, I just get known the concept of polyglotism. I know this only from programming languages, which are much easier to pick up due to the reduced amount of vocabulary. I think it's great to speak so many languages! Very interesting concept indeed.

The first time I read in English I closed the book after one page. Fast forward a month, I opened it again and I finished it from the start w/ the same knowledge (I read a new word, translate it and remembered when it came around again, if not than the 3rd time was the charm). I just changed my mindset. I had a period of time when I was obsessed (~8/16h reading...) I hope I can do this with my next language too.

I don't have a routine yet. I have a lot of time now, so.. it's not like I really have to plan. But I spend most of my learning time on listening, 'shadowing' and writing down sentences with new vocabulary. The new vocab comes from the videos I'm watching (easy Brazilian portuguese). Some tips: - Focus a lot on listening in the beginning. - Find your best moment of the day for learning. It might be in the evening or in the afternoon. Find the moment when you can concentrate the best. - Don't skip a day. - Learn phrases. Not just words. And if you like listening to music in your target language: it's also a good idea to let 'google translate' translate the lyrics of the songs you're listening. If a melody sticks in your head and you can sing it along. And then then you'll remember those words easily.

I study etimologies and definitions in my target language. Por ejemplo etimologia de palabra, then that normally takes me to latin and greek origins. I would do that for Spanish, French, German. I even do for it English words, since modern English has roots in several languages. Then I would write down a page of sentences with a target word. For example, serenidad en espanol I would look at ejemplos de serenidad and write a page of sentences. Then for a kick I would look up serenidad en Frances o Aleman. That would force me to learn a language in another language. If that makes any sense, I hope that can work for someone. It makes my practice interesting. Ive been studying multiple languages for almost two decades. It refreshing to see people with a passion for language.
