@@PolyglotProgress It's all about amassing efficient training hours. Either ad-hoc hours or structured hours. Elysse actually seems good about amassing lots of ad-hoc hours. 😂

Great video! Lots of great points! Yes -- I classify Elysse as a learner who puts a super high emphasis on speaking. And looks like that is her main goal -- so a great goal for her (based on her goals and what she likes to do). IMO the main thing is motivation -- keeping yourself motivated to log the training hours you need to learn the language. On my end I like reading (and I consider it the most "efficient" method to increase your vocab) so I put more time using reading to learn languages than listening or speaking -- although will say if you do have to put time into listening to be good at listening, and you have to put time into speaking if you want to be good at speaking. I do love your logging hours idea. Yeah, I wish I'd done that, I can only roughly estimate the hours I've put in -- it's work to log hours (and you have to be consistent about it) -- but it would be so cool to have my hours logged.

I’m learning Arabic rn, and a listening activity I do is playing vocab videos on youtube (e.g. 100 words for everyday life) and writing down how I think the word is spelled. That way, I can work on distinguishing similar sounds and can also connect words I might have heard but haven’t fully committed to memory.

I personally don't enjoy translating songs at a beginner level. It makes it feel like I'm studying every time I listen to those songs. Even after ten years. I've found that listening to A LOT of music in a specific language helps me remember vocabulary and improve my listening comprehension without even having to try. With my latest target language I just listened to whatever music I like. As my general level got higher I naturally got better at understanding songs without it feeling like studying. Now that I'm at an intermediate level I like looking at the lyrics on spotify if I do have trouble understanding some things. It feels a lot better at an intermediate level.

This video was so interesting. I’m a HUGE fan of Elysse and have often wondered how she’s acquired such high levels with her languages with a routine so chill. Witchcraft is the answer I suppose because I’m very much like you. If I don’t check off the boxes (flash cards, mandatory listening, italki etc) early in the day, it prob won’t get done. I think what didn’t help you was being so new in Bulgarian. Had it not been for that you could’ve thrown a movie or playlist on in the language and called it studying like I do 😂

My language learning methods couldn’t be farther away from Elysse’s. Still, I love watching her videos (especially because I know she speaks my native language beautifully- the language being Portuguese) and your channel is also one of my favorites when it comes to language learning. This was a really fun idea that I think I should try some time. After all, it’s still learning and improving in the target language. Great video 👏👏 Suggestion: t Matt vs Japan (Refold method). Please do Iclal next, she's a Turkish polyglot. I feel like she learns languages to a relatively good level in a shorter span of time than one would imagine so it'd be good to analyse and apply some of her methods i think. She also usually speaks at a faster pace which I find fascinating and has often been told by natives that her pronunciation is really good.

I learn whole sentences saying them aloud. 5 days - 300 repetitions per day at least. Later I don't need to translate. I know the meaning of words straight away like in my native language. And also I remember the meaning longer than by learning separate words. This method is called: chunking. It was a real game changer in my learning process and communication skills in English and other languages.😊

Have you ever tried Pimsleur? -- that's really kind of what Pimsleur is all about -- but a little more about using anticipation and spaced repetition (spaced repetition is more about being efficient in your use of repetition). I love Pimsleur!! Your method is kind of like how kids learn-- they repeat and repeat 😂 -- and it works because all kids learn their native language. 🙂

I will say you will learn a language if you do two things: 1) You are truly motivated and stay motivated!! and 2) you put in the training hours. If you do both of these things you will learn. Methods beyond this are IMO all around staying motivated and putting in the hours (regardless if you are on a 1 year, 2 year, 4 year, or longer plan). With some methods being more "efficient" than others -- meaning efficient methods will give you slightly better results. But believe me "motivation" is king!!

Nice concept and a great way to really test what does or doesn't work in your own learning. I think it's really easy to get stale and stuck with our ways of learning, ignoring when we need to shake things up a bit. Will definitely give the song translation a go!

The Easy series!! "Easy German", "Easy Spanish", "Easy Portuguese", "Easy French". They don't have all languages but for what they have amazing!! I'm learning Portuguese and can definitely recommend some learning channels that have native speakers in Portugues. On language learning theory (to keep you motivated) -- definitely Steve Kaufman.
