Why do I seem to see you in the comments of like every freaking video these days? Not complaning, but just kind of a coincidence. But I totally agree, all Geddy, Alex and Neil are all geniuses in their own right and Rush are one of the few bands (along with Tool and Led Zeppelin) that doesn’t have a bad member.

@@nasticanasta Nonsense. If that's where they went past you, fine. I myself don't like the "dense" sound they took up in later years, preferring more the "clean" 70's sound of say "A Farewell to Kings" (my favorite Rush album) But the lyrics got better and more emotionally relevant as Peart got older. You can't expect a 50 year old to write "By Tor and the Snow Dog".

In the early 80's, rock bands were very lucrative in the southeastern U.S. I was a road crew monkey for a regional band. Worked several RUSH shows. The audience, as well as the crews, were sometimes mesmerized by the performance. Neil was finishing his solo and we got in the way of a backstage prop move because everyone stopped to listen (very professional). I became an accountant. But I wouldn't have missed the end of that solo if you had set me on fire.

Neil's stated that Rand was a passing influence, not a major one. Peart says that he read widely; he got serious about reading on hitting the road with Rush. 2112 was their third album. They had not had enough time on tour for Neil to have read much. Rand was among the first writers he read. This coincided with his writing their next lyrics. Peart paraphrased her on 2112, a record defying the record label -- this was meta. He gave attribution out of respect and to avoid plagiarism charges (there are videos on youTube where he says that). Their subsequent albums abandon Randianism. To say she is a ‘major influence’ contradicts Neil himself. It's more fitting to conclude that his love for being true to himself came from his exercise of it. Defying the record label proved, to him, that being true to oneself was the path to personal and artistic fulfillment. His advice to the rest of us is to do the same.

I'm glad you clarify this. As someone who is *not* amused by the toxic levels individualism (inspired partly by Ayn Rand's work) some societies have reached and still a fan of Rush, I'm frustrated that collectivist appeals like Closer to the Heart... Philosophers and ploughmen Each must know his part To sow a new mentality Closer to the heart ❤ ... and The Trees (IMO, though the last line is a bit jarring)... So the maples formed a union And demanded equal rights "The oaks are just too greedy We will make them give us light" Now there's no more oak oppression For they passed a noble law And the trees are all kept equal By hatchet, axe, and saw 👀 ... haven't been mentioned.

I find it amusing that Rush is constantly criticized by people who don't like them for there lyrics. Yet you would be hard pressed to find another band that writes about artistic expression like they do, a band that clearly only cares about the music they create, not the lifestyle or the money that comes with being famous musicians.

I think a lot of the reason people like Peart, and others in the 70s counterculture, got attracted to Rand's ideas was the simple fact that the devastating consequences of her economic thoughts were still blissfully abstract, due to them not really being all that implemented yet. Reaganomics, and Alan Greenspan's "life's work" still hadn't happened. So I can imagine it was easy to mainly focus on the aspects of Rand's "Philosophy" that were, and I guess still are, universally appealing: Namely those of individualism and freedom and so on and so forth. When you focus on those, and you've yet to see the incredible damage the implementation of the "virtue of selfishness" can wreak on a society, I get the appeal. Same as when people who have been effectively isolated from all us "Peasants" in an upper-middle class world and above can adopt the philosophy. You have the luxury of not getting the ugly side of it thrust in your face. That ugly side falls on the poor and the struggling, without them having any choice in the matter. But for those in the ivory towers, I can imagine the view is great, even if there is the occasional fire in the distance. It's very easy to overlook how narrowly this kind of "Freedom" is defined, how selectively it is applied and how narrowly it is distributed when you're either among the fortunate, or the ugly consequences simply haven't happened yet.

Supply side economics (which is what he means by Reaganomics) has been shown to be a failure for anyone who was not already wealthy. Middle class income stagnated as their buying power fell. While it was a boon to the investor class, the working and middle class paid for it; are still paying for it.

All right, I liked your conclusion. Peart (and Geddy and Alex) are really their own philosophy; informed by previous philosophers, but that is always the case. But more than being iconoclasts, Rush is inspirational. I would never have become a professor of philosophy is I hadn't listened to them when I was a teenager. And I still find the lyrics insightful even now. Thank you for being up the topic...

As a musician, and someone who has always sought out interesting, and new sounds, Alex Lifeson’s guitar tone on “Spirit Of The Radio” is possibly one of the greatest in Rock History. He is not given enough credit for his monstrous, thunderous, and insanely complimentary tone. It’s such a perfect cap to the intensity, and power of the rhythm section of Rush. The man sounds like he is 3 guitarists. Having also seen Rush live, I can confirm he is but one man, with some sort of magical tonal power that drips from his fingertips to wash us, the musical masses in sweet sweet tone.

Progressive Rock has always been my favorite genre, and I’m only 20 years old. It’s honestly one of the most misunderstood Genres. You don’t quite get it until you really try to pay attention to wants happening. Rush is my all time favorite band too. I also love Genesis and Yes, but Rush has always stuck out to me as a band. When I was ten, my Dad was driving me to school and had classic rock radio. The song Tom Sawyer (I’m a diehard Rush fan, so don’t worry that is not my favorite Rush Song btw) started playing and completely blew my mind even at that young age. That’s when I discovered that Rock music in general was better than pop and rap. I think many people in my generation lack the ability to really think about reality from listening to a lot of meaningless rap music. Neil Peart has taught me many ideas that have helped form my view on learning to be myself and not just someone who goes along with the norm. RIP to the Professor! As a guitar player, Alex Lifeson was the reason I picked up the guitar in the first place. Musically, they were one of the most talented bands, and were able to have hits while having many really cool deep tracks that stayed pretty true to the band’s signature sound. I love Rush and I don’t regret trying to find my own taste, and a band where I can escape from the world to learn something many people don’t quite get.

I do not care if you love Rush or if you hate them, their ridiculously high level of musicianship is not up for debate. All three were incredible players, but it goes beyond that. The detailed arrangements of rush tunes give me a headache just thinking about, with the constantly shifting time signatures and key signatures. Geddy Lee once said that everything they did with the band they felt like they were always reaching or pushing to make music that was just beyond their ability or skill level. That always amazed me that guys this good felt like they could always play even better and push further. What an amazing group that did so much for people’s appreciation of not just enjoyable songs to hear, but for the respect of stellar musicianship.

Though I appreciate your reference to " 2112 ", You totally overlooked their two core releases that built off from the success of " 2112 ". ( " A Farewell to Kings " y " Hemispheres " ). Understanding " Permanent Waves " y " Moving Pictures " were both really awesome albums, The title track of " Farewell " fittingly caps off the work of " 2112 ", all the while... " Xanadu " clearly established the band's foundation for their signature sound for which We now know them. In fact, Rush really went out on a limb when they composed the first book of " Cygnus X - ! ", A true masterpiece of an exploratory saga of the Rocinante that continues straight into their 1978 release of " Hemispheres " in Book 2 of " Cygnus X - 1 ". It would be a true crime if I failed to mention the artistic mastery of " Circumstances " ( Human Nature ), " The Trees " (A great story about the forest ), y... Their greatest musical instrumental opus that will be studied for centuries to come... " La Villa Strangiato ". Last, but not least... One should NEVER overlook their protests over the loss of their privacy Along with The constant pressure from the corporate stiffs to release that formula radio crap we are all being force fed As outlined in their protest song, " Limelight". I would've smashed the " Thumbs Up " button had you Done a more thorough research on their legacy. Especially with the recent passing of The Professor, Neil Peart. Out of respect to the true Rush afficianatos besides myself, and... Until you correct your content in this video to include these known facts, I'm smashing that very rare " Thumbs Down " button in protest to Your indifferent ignorance towards Neil and Rush, As a whole. Summer of 1987. I'm at the city library looking for something/anything interesting to read. Led Zeppelin's "mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the Earth" is reeling through my brain, and 'Presence' was their in-the-foxhole reaction to all the upstart whippersnappers copping their moves. "Achilles' Last Stand" is a reaction to Rush's swirling neo-Progressivism, and Neil Peart is so influenced by Ayn Rand, so I ended up spending the whole summer curled up with the mighty 'Atlas Shrugged'. It changed my life forever.

I was pleasantly surprised by your quoting of vital signs. that song is so overlooked. I know there are time limitations, but without them witch hunt would have been a perfect set of lyrics to feature as well.

Witch Hunt is part of the "Fear" series of songs, a sort of subplot Neil Peart created over time which spans several albums starting with Moving Pictures. Can't remember the other songs off the top of my head, but The Weapon is one of them.

Oh, you are doing Tool's predecessors. Hahaha. Man, Rush is the epitome of prog rock Edit: have any of you guys heard Adam Jones play the riff from Passage to Bangkok on that one live video on yt? It was like an opening riff. He played it, and now it's his. Really aounds like something out of a Tool song. Awesome. If any of you guys are interested in hearing it, I'll post the link to it, or at least the name of the concert because I don't know it off the top of my head. Cheers

As others pointed out, Peart's personal views evolved away from Rand, to later become a self-described "bleeding heart libertarian" (Rolling Stone interview). He goes on in that interview to describe how when he was in London (before Rush), he came up against a formulaic music industry that was stifling of creativity. I went to a Rush show in the early 90s where tickets for the first two rows were unsold. If you brought three canned goods to donate, you were entered into a raffle to win the reserved seats. Several semi trucks were at the ready to fill with food, and the line to donate was long. That doesn't play very well against "Begging hands and bleeding hearts will only cry for more". Neil was also the same person who later wrote Nobody's Hero, which is an "anthem" to empathy. I would argue that objectivism only promotes empathy and generosity as values if we get something out of it for our own personal gain. I read Anthem at the age of 19 because of 2112. It all has a point, but is not to be taken as absolute truth. IMHO, a small dollop of Rand-ism is enough to remind one of the value of self-reliance, but it's not a magic bullet to create a successful society. Rand was an awful person in reality, and the circumstances of her life (unhappy, self-exiled from her family, most likely had a severe personality disorder) must be considered against the body of her works. My brief fascination with Rand was a learning experience, and helped me to understand those who closely identify with her.

Rush is my most favorite rock group. They've been my favorite group since i was in highschool, i got to sit down and have coffee with the three of them in my favorite coffee shop in 96'. We talked for about 50 minutes, mostly about when we were kids. We did different kinds of farm work, everyone's upbringing is different. I got to sit down and talk with the makers of the music i love the most! To me: that's more valuable than being the first to walk on mars or something. The reason is because their music is Bible based, it's very spiritual, and prophetic. The rhythm and beat of the guitars and drums emphasize the expression of the message of the lyrics, coupled with the raising and lowering of the voice. Like Biblical scripture; it all fits together in no time.

Always had a very difficult time figuring out the lyrics to their songs. Easy now, but back in the day there was nowhere to look them up. Seeing pics of them from the seventies and then in the last ten years is so great. They certainly had an interesting look (the silk kimonos that Dave Grohl mentioned at their induction?) and now Alex looks like a high school principal. Favorite band of all time. Miss them. The world lost a great one last week but it's a comfort that he has finally found peace.

Well done. Regarding Ayn Rand, this a clearly more Neil's creative interpretation and belief's coming to light that the other two guys had to get comfortable with. When interviewed they acknowledge Rand's influence but downplay it to a large extent. One thing I enjoy about Neil's lyrics is that he can make a statement but in a way that still provides an avenue of interpretation for the listener, which I think is true to the art form that sought to create.

Another thing from moving pictures is red barchetta which speaks of a “motor law” which basically bans cars that express individuality. And also from spirit of the radio, Geddy Lee speaks angrily of a salesman on the radio because that also blurs the meaning of good music and individuality.

I love that you examined the first part of Rush's career when doing a examination of their philosophy....but.... by not looking at their later music and especially Peart's personal evolution into less a Objectivist and more a "bleeding heart Libertarian" (his words) you only tell half the story. I must say this though, you did a hell of a job!

Rush is that rare kind of band whose music can make my day better, regardless of the mood I'm into on any given day; so they have always been among my favorite bands. That being said, it is my believe that Peart (even back in the days when he explicitly professed admiration for Ayn Rand and her ideas) is somebody who is careful enough to craft his lyrics in a way that it doesn't sound like proselytism and listeners still get enough room to make their very own opinions over the subject. If you listen to songs like "The Trees" or "Manhattan Project", to name only a few, you'll surely notice this. I'm not particularly a fan of a lot of things Ayn Rand espoused (only very few things here and there) and yet I do enjoy songs like "Anthem" or "2112" because of Peart's lyrical approach.
