Yvette There has been two instances were this happened: 1989 vs TPAB and 25 vs Lemonade One side talks to the part of Americans that don’t see any issues whatsoever with life other than heartbreak and love, 1989 was a great pop album by a great artist but it was nowhere as close to TPAB from a political standpoint and significance but this could also justify thinking that TPAB doesn’t appeal to such a broad demographic as 1989. But then we have Lemonade vs 25, again an album by another great artist but with the same vanilla tone and message of love/heartbreak the clear bias and blatant disregard comes from the fact that Lemonade was also about Love and heartbreak so it appealed to a very broad demographic, but it had so many layers to it, Formation showed a Pop artist like Beyoncé take a stand on police brutality and black identity with proud and strength, it became one of the best albums ever and yet it didn’t won. This is coming from someone who isn’t black and loves all of the artists above but I’m sorry you have to be willfully blind if you still believe there isn’t a racial bias, we still have a lot of work to do as a society to integrate people who aren’t white and give everyone the same level and opportunities, my best friend is black and he has been pulled over 21 times for no reason at all, I’ve been pulled over once but I was going 85 in a 70 and the police officer let me go with a warning even though I didn’t had my license with me!! What the actual fuck.

I guess you could show him something like redbone by Donald Glover, or depression and obsession by xxxtentacion. Those songs aint really rap but you can introduce them, see if he like em, then tell him their actully rappers. I did that with my dad and he gave the genre a chance after seeing how open it could be. Or show him some rap adjacent songs like kanye and bon iver, or kid cudis music. Hilariously, 2-Pac and Kanye West are bottom 20%. The top 20 guys that feature there are all artists I like. Also for me, Aesop is (for me) the guy who's my favourite abstract / layered meaning rapper. Labour Days is one of those "well, this changes everything" albums for myself. Best rhymer? MF DOOM, no question and he features on my favourite popular collab album, Madvilliany. Best Indie album/single album of all time? For me, Cannibal Ox - Iron Galaxy. I also love Non-Prophets - Hope. Best known group is the Wu, and indie group is the Weathermen. And best album you've never heard of? TES x2 from 2003 - esp this track (kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4mrppuCis2GhJI) I've listened to a bit of Lamar. Find him very RnB/pop for my liking. Alright isn’t optimistic, that refrain people took at face value is criticizing people’s tendency to “tough it” and just try to make it through without trying to change anything.

As Lamar puts it, "There was a lot going on - still to this day there's a lot going on. I wanted to approach ['Alright'] as more uplifting, but aggressive. Not playing the victim, but still having that 'Yeah, we strong.'"

I remember when I was watching Fantano's review of TPAB & he said that whole time Lamar was having a conversation with Tupac by editing his old archives with his questions. It really just blew my mind and made me check out the whole album. P.S - This was 2 years back when I was trying to get more into rap and found out about Lamar.

I still dont get how people put Jcole near Kendrick i love them both but Jcoles pen game is nowhere near Kendricks.
@BrotherMalMusic4 жыл бұрын
achronos178 The answer to your confusion is that “pen game” isn’t the only aspect of artistry, and J. Cole doesn’t have to be a super-complex lyricist to be considered among other great artists. He may not be as intricate of a rapper as Kendrick, in a TECHNICAL sense, but his music can still hit you a certain way because he has other qualities that make up being a great artist. It’s honestly that simple.
@livingonamar4 жыл бұрын
J. Cole has a more mainstream style and it gets a lot of listeners. J. Cole has easier stories to connect to when speaking generally about the masses, and it's easier to emotionally connect with J. Cole's songs. And when people feel they have a personal connection with the writers music and with them they become their favourites. And the GOAT status doesn't mean anything more than ''my favourite artist'' nowadays. So he gets called the best a lot.

Poly is talking about the decade as a whole not just the hip hop sound, Kendrick music is bigger than just his influence on hip hop. It’s his influence on the world within this decade.
@M360-w6o4 жыл бұрын
TruMusic89 In terms of Drake being the main reason rappers are more emotional on their tracks because of him. Although he contributed, I disagree that he’s the main reason, 808 and heartbreaks birthed Drake’s signature sound especially So Far Gone and Take Care and influenced many other artists that debuted this decade like Future, Uzi, Travis Scott, Juice Wrld etc. Drake is an amazing artist but he adapts well to trends that other artists start, rather than stating them himself I.e Kanye, Migos, Weeknd etc. Cudi also deserves credit for rappers tapping into their emotions more based on his contributions to 4 songs on 808 and heartbreaks as well as Man on the moon. Migos and Thug have been the most influential hip hop artists in the past 4-5 years. Also Kendricks GKMC, TPAB and DAMN have influenced culture and artists from multiple genres, not just hip hop.
