i love "it's Persephone" because in the myth, her name used to be Kore as the goddess of spring, and i believe it meant maiden, but as the queen of the Underworld, she took on the name/title Persephone, meaning destroyer. she was more wildly feared than her husband.
@nekocup5524
@nekocup5524 Жыл бұрын
Not really? Underworld gods were generally something people avoided all around, but Hades was the one most avoided, getting an infinite amount of epithets so people wouldn't have to say his name in risk of obtaining his attention. "Kore" is just as well almost certainly just another name to avoid Persephone, and we are lucky to have the name at all, but in most myths with her she is the kinder counterpart to Hades strict order, and usually when leniency is given, its because of Persephone.

As a huge fan of Greek mythology and the Olympus gods as a whole, I really appreciate Persephone’s story a lot. It was the first one I heard of and it made me fall in love with the lore in Greek mythology. Persephone, Daughter of Demeter and goddess of Spring, falls into a trap set for her by the Ruler of the Underworld (Her uncle from both sides). The trap was a beautiful flower, almost as beautiful as her, but, when she picked it, it opened a hole under her and made her fall in his kingdom. The Nymphs with her couldn’t catch her in time and had to run to Demeter to tell her. When she got hungry, Hades gave her pomegranate seeds to eat. There were 12, and she ate 7 of the pomegranate seeds. That trapped her in the Underworld for 7 of the 12 months, only leaving five of those for her to visit her mother. Demeter, being the goddess of Agriculture, would let the soils die out when she wasn’t with her daughter, as the heartbreak was too much to bear. But, when her daughter was with her, the humans could enjoy bountiful harvests.

THE LITTLE REFERENCES OH MY GOD “You picked me like a flower” - to attract Persephone, Hades sprouted a flower - a really beautiful one which attracted her. Upon her picking it, a crack opened up in the ground which sucked her into the underworld “Didn’t expect the thorns” - She’s a daughter of Demeter “Tearing down your tapestries” : She struggled with Hades a lot at first “It’s funny that you still think you’re the king” : Same thing “Pomegranate lips” - She was trapped in the Underworld forever when Hades gave her pomegranate seeds to eat. Also, she’s the goddess of spring :l “Baby, I don’t owe you [redacted]”, “karma is a [redacted]” these emphasise the struggles in Hades and Persephone’s forced wedding; the fact that Zeus, her father, approved without her knowledge, (which was acceptable in ancient times) “It’s Persephone” - Her standing up for herself and basically become a bad4ss “Nine circles of hell” these are legit, search them up “I can cut right through a soul with a snap, don’t need a spell” - When she became trapped in the Underworld, she became the Queen of Death “I’m the Queen of Death and Life” - being Demeter and Zeus’ offspring, she is the Goddess of Spring. When she came into the Underworld, she became the Queen of Death as she was Hades’, the God of Death’s wife. “Bite the seed” - She was bound to the underworld by pomegranate seeds “Kiss of death” - not sure, but she could probably kill with a kiss :0 WOW

well Zeus was the one who orchastrated and told Hades he approved of it and told him to kidnap Persephone, even in the original myth Zeus is blatantly said to be the one at fault for basically saying "Hey I'll give you my daughter, shes totally on board" (ps she wasnt) but in the end after Hades discovered that he gave her a choice to stay or leave and gave her pomegranate seeds, then after that the tablet containing that part of the original myth was broken and we dont know what happens after that. But the next tablet which was relatively unbroken showed that Persephone gets officially maried to Hades but can still go above ground for half a year and only needs to spend half her time in the underworld, so it wasnt all that bad.

It is indeed about Persephone, who was kidnapped by Hades with her father's endorsement, then grew to love him while Demeter was causing famines to try and force Hades's hand and get her back. That whole myth is essentially both of her parents being under the impression that they're allowed to dictate her life, and this song seems to encapsulate how Persephone would disagree.

@soedragons3582
@soedragons3582 2 ай бұрын
@@annettenazaroff3636 First, in no part of the myth it is implied that she was a child, that was Helen when she was kidnapped by Theseus and the other idiot (yeah I don't even bother to remember his name). Second, If we go for the homeric hymn of Demeter (well the part that isn't torn anyway), the seeds are mentioned twice and they contradict each other, the first time it's when Hades accepts letting Persephone go, there he puts them in her hand and promises that her rulership, honor and power will be equal to his, she'll be a queen of queens, that he will try to be the best husband to her (that's why I don't really like the character of Nico as a demigod son of Hades in Percy Jackson, because it's a contradiction with the characteristic trait of Hades of treating promises, even without swearing by the Styx, as law and the only way to make him bend his laws is if the one who asks is Persephone herself) and that he will make sure to punish those who disrespect her personally, that's something Hera (whose domain as goddess of marriage was disrespected by her own husband almost daily) or Amphititre (who only has the position of her kids as heirs and her position as Poseidon's wife secured) don't have and Helios said earlier in the hymn that sooner or later everything will end up in the Underworld; the second time is when Persephone is reunited with Demeter and when she is asked if she ate anything in there, she says that Hades forced the seeds in her mouth with a kiss; which is rather interesting, since it implies that the Iron Queen lied to her mother. Third, what makes the relationship rather wholesome is not how it began (still better than how Hera's started, at least he didn't sexually assault her, and when even Ovid, who hated authority, gods and Athena with the passion of a thousand suns, doesn't add that, we can totally exclude that possibility, also the kidnapping was Zeus' idea too) but how it ended, Persephone is not the goddess of Spring, she is only the Queen of the Underworld, she is a RULER (on caps) of one of the three Greek Mythological Realms, and the only one who can object to her decisions it's also the only one who can't say no to her, out of the three wives, Persephone was the one who won the lottery both literally (Hades was also the god of Riches and he promised her everything) and metaphorically (she ended up with her own kingdom and, according to Helios, sooner or later everything else)

For those who are wondering about the symbolism as a Greek Mythology nerd I will Break it down. Pomegranate lips is a reference to Persephone who was abducted and taken to the underworld to be the wife of the best god in Greek Mythology ever, Hades. She turns from a the goddess of spring to the goddess of Death. She eats a pomegranate seed and is forced to come into the underworld every half of the year and this is how we get winter. Been through nine circle of hell is a reference to Dantes inferno where there are nine circles of Hell that Dante and the poet Virgil must travel through and get to the ninth, which houses the frozen body of Satan. Youre welcome and I love this song.

It's worth noting that Persephone and Hades had the most stable relationship of the gods; by all accounts the whole 'kidnap your wife' thing was basically in style at the time (and given how often Zeus pulled that exact stunt, it was), and neither were prone to philandering. Hell, Hades was actually really protective of his relationship, and when a couple of Greek Heroes decided to kidnap Persephone, Hades trapped them in the underworld for eternity. So yeah. Loving couple that lived generally blameless lives and worked hard to ensure their duties were tended to.
@shadow_phoenix_alex

The guy that wasn't actively trying to kidnap and marry his wife did get rescued later on and Persephone was similarly protective of Hades. In some myths even the crueller one of the two (minthe).
@torazely
@torazely 2 жыл бұрын
Technically, by Greek law, he didn't kidnap her. He approached Zeus, her dad, expressing a desire to marry her. Zeus gave his approval and basically ordered Hades to take her, since he was hesitant. Hades went to claim his bride, as basically ordered by Zeus. If anyone is to blame, it's not Hades.

@torazely
@torazely 2 жыл бұрын
@@kellyryan9866 there is actually no true version of the myth like that. Persephone willingly entering the underworld was made up by Charlene Spretnak in 1978 as a way to make the original myths more appropriate for her 4-year old daughter. Charlene later had her story low-key stolen by Marjorie Graham. Though both women claimed that the story is a pre-Helenistic version, there has been no evidence thst such a version ever existed before 78.

This is quite a good reflection of the myths around Persephone. People tend to forget that the ancients were happy to invoke Zeus, Poseidon, even to invoke the Eumenides, but they actively avoid the attention of Hades and Persephone. Considering how rarely they show up in myths, it suggests that people feared both Dread Persephone and her husband.

"Kore", aka "Young Girl/Maiden" in her role as Demeter's daughter and "Desponia", aka "Ruler/Queen" in her role as Queen of the Underworld. I highly recommend their channel. I have to think so much about Persephone from Orv, that woman is badass and deadly. I'm in love with her dynamic with Hades. Shes the boss that does negotiations or generally the talking, is daring and is definitely the top in the relationship and Hades the introvert (and because of that let's her do the talking) who loves his wife dearly, but when he needs to shows hes still a powerful god. I saw her in the comics and was: "Woah love her 😍!" and started reading the Novel just in hopes of seeing her make an appearance anew and I'm very close to that part. So i'm definitely going to hear this song on loop when she(or Hades) shows up again!

Love the song and was wondering if the characterisation of Persephone in the song is any way related to the theory that she may have been a far older and originally more important goddess of death than her husband Hades. Especially the "It’s funny that you think you’re still the king" and "Baby I don’t owe you shit" lines really work well with that idea. Regardless, a banger.

If someone wants to know, the story of Persephone starts with her and her mother, Demeter, goddess of agriculture. Persephone picked a flower (the story here can change) and was sucked into the underworld to be Hades wife. Persephone resented her life there and wished for the fruit of the over world, so she ate 6 seeds of a pomegranate. After eating the seeds, she be came the Queen of Death. Demeter in the over world neglected her duties of giving life to earth,so the amount of seeds were the time Persephone was aloud to leave. For 6 of 12 months, Persephone was with her mother, Demeter gave life to earth in these times, making Spring for the people, and when she visited her husband, she was depressed, creating winter. (Persephone didn’t want to be hades wife, leading to lines of tearing down tapestry’s in anger.)

I love this song so much! Persephone and Hades are my favourite Greek god(esse)s. The Greek interpretation of the underworld is by far the most interesting, and Hades and Persephone actually have the most healthy and stable relationship out of the entire Greek pantheon. Whenever one of them it kidnapped or attempted to be seduced by some stupid mortal results in the other immediately saving them. They never cheat, they're actually happy with each other, it's surprisingly wholesome. Even fun-er fact! Even though Hades kidnapped Persephone, he did so because Zeus told him to. At the end of the legend, everyone had placed the blame on Zeus.
