Pompeii Ruins Travel Guide: Tips to See Everything in One Day | Italy

Pompeii is SO big, but we were determined to see all of it. Follow along as we show you all the ruins, the amazing mosaic floors, and life as it was for Pompeiians 2000 years ago. This travel guide will walk you through all the sites in Pompeii, from the amphitheater to the House of the Geometric Mosaics to the incredible Casa del Menandro. From the Temple of Apollo and the Temple of Isis to the Forum and the plaster casts of the victims of the Mount Vesuvius eruption. We'll also give you helpful tips along the way to save you time and make sure you have a great experience when you visit the Pompeii ruins.
We also wanted to show you how to get from Naples to Pompeii. Taking the train to the Pompeii Archaeological Site can be a little complicated because there are multiple train stations in Pompeii, so we show you exactly what tickets to buy and where to go to catch the train.

We went on a guided tour for about 3hours it was very cheap, informative and worth every penny ( highly recommended ) and then approximately 3hours on our own. A guided tour is a great idea here. Especially if the tour guide could get you into some of the locked places like Casa del Menandro. We're usually happier with the audio guide, but a tour guide may have been more useful in this case. And then sticking around afterward to explore on your own - you guys definitely did it right. This was so great to watch! As a young boy back in the 60's I remember reading my first book from the library on the story of Pompeii.... and I dreamed of someday getting to visit this place. It took me nearly fifty years but I did finally get there! Absolutely one of the coolest things I saw while in Italy.

Amazing point of view, guys! I'm a tourist guide in Pompei, I used to spend my life in there before covid. I guided thousand tourists doing tours. Very good information about Circumvesuviana, I know how many times people get wrong direction from Naples. Pompeii is huge, right! How its history is deep in times. Its unicity is give us deeply information about the roman dailylife. we know their names, we know their business, we know how they used to live. I fell in love with pompeii when i was a little girl and never will stop to love her.

I love the history. Of Pompei and found your video. Well I feel like I’ve been there! Loved it. You are both chill and informative. So fascinating to realize they were not so different. No technology for them but they created luxurious baths and homes and theaters. Had water sources and sewers. It was a metropolis that catered to a variety of tastes. It looks just like it does in the movie. But to see it in person is very special. Thank you for providing this great view of Pompei.

We visited Herculaneum the next day. I'm editing that video now and I'll post it soon. I agree that it was more fun because it was smaller and less crowded, and nothing was locked up like in Pompeii. Both are different enough that they're both worth doing, for sure. -Brian

Hi guys and baby Kai! It is wonderful to hear from you and what a spectacular video. Well, they're always good .I can imagine how much more time you would have spent there if you didn't come across the locked areas. But what you have shown me today ? This has got to be my favorite! All the beauty and structures from the painting on the wall to the mosaics on the floor, I mean you saw it so you know what you've brought me! I kind of know the history behind it but you have brought it in a way where I can understand it if that makes any sense. And when I say that ,I'm just talking about how how beautiful it is I've never seen it in that way before. I feel like it's up close and personal . It's always some television documentary type thing. But this place is unbelievable! But it also has its sadness about it also. This is one of those places that you have to see it to believe it. I mean I'm seeing it through a video and I'm overwhelmed. It is more massive then I thought. I'm sure I'll watch it again that's usually what I do because I always feel like I miss something LOL. Thank you so much for sharing this one. You guys take care of each other and you know Kai, as little as he is, may or may not remember certain things of places that you've been, and this age but I think it's never to early to fill their heads with knowledge and being a part of what you're doing. Some years back, I imported/bought online, a massive book on Pompeii. Unfortunately, the government authorities (one of those in S.E.Asia) confiscated it without giving a reason (I suppose due to nudity in some murals). I thought the book would be a sort of substitute for visiting the place, given limited financial and time bullets. Now I think I'll just have to squeeze in Pompeii (and/or Herculaneum) into a future tour of Italy.

We tried to go over there, but it was closed. We asked an official and they said they were currently excavating or cleaning or something, so it was not open to the public. Next time, hopefully we can go see it. We definitely want to! -Brian

The public quad you mention at 8:22 was where the gladiators trained and lived. If you look, there are a number of doors each are to a cell for a single gladiator.

We spent the entire day at Pompeii and likely still missed a few things. It is possible to hike Vesuvius and visit Pompeii in the same day, but you definitely won't have enough time to see all of Pompeii, it's just too big. 10:30, sorry to report the bones are inside if they were the original casts 😔 the casts were formed when the archeologists were digging and started hitting air pockets with bones. Then they decided to fill the air pockets with plaster and that created the casts we see today. I think it was the ash that compacted around the bodies and then they decomposed to form the molds. Apologies for any inaccuracies, it's been a few years but that's what we studied in school. Would love to visit Pompeii sometime!

Hi Jaslyn, you're correct. I should have clarified in the video, the specific casts we were looking at, the ones next to the Forum, are not the original casts, they're replicas, so there were no bones in them. The originals are located throughout the Archaeological Park, mostly in ruins that were locked, so they didn't make it into the video. -Brian

wow what a nice video. if you want to visit another archaeological site in Campania, I recommend Paestum. There are Greek temples from 500 BC . If you go there one day, don't forget to taste the buffalo mozzarella. as food and art, we Italians are the best. ... for all the rest, we are a disaster 😅

True. We didn't book ahead because we had some flexibility on which day we'd go, and we wanted to make sure to go on a sunny day since you're exposed to the weather all day in Pompeii. You can't change the date if you book your tickets online.

We bought the ticket to Pompeii when we arrived. There's always a crazy line because the entire train has to buy their tickets at the same time. So get in the front car of the train and go immediately to the entrance so you're in the front of the line. See how we did it at 1:08 in the video.

Buy everything there. The train tickets at the station, and the Pompeii entry tickets at the ticket booth on arrival. No need to buy anything in advance. And that will give you some flexibility in case plans change last minute.

How there is no any English signs!! In Egypt they count for tourists, they have English signs even in the metro and train stations!!!

I think it's because Italian is written in the same alphabet as English, so even if it's in a different language, we can still _read_ it. As opposed to in Egypt, your signs would be in Arabic, right? So English speakers would have no idea what the signs say.

That a 3 way road ! Romans had problems eith so called water coming from high gronds So those road where doing 3 jobs ! Collecting , the stones accros where sopposed clean the water from big debris ( trees grass bushes ecc ecc ) as well as pedestrian crossing and high way for Charriots ! Infact if you look on ether side of the roads you can see the imprints of Carri wheels . Grazie

_Any place_ is a place for flipflops if you're crazy enough. I once hiked onto a glacier in flipflops because I forgot to pack my sneakers. 🤦 But yes, I totally agree with you.

Yes, I'm glad we had time. We knew we _had_ to go to Pompeii because, you know, it's Pompeii. But we really wanted to go to Herculaneum, too, because it's better.

No, we tried to go but when we were there it was closed to the public because they were actively excavating or restoring it. I'd love to see that, though. So hopefully next time we're in the area it'll be open.

Parking is 10 Euro per day at Pompeii, but if you park at one of the restaurants nearby, and eat at the restaurant before or after your visit to the ruins, they let you park for free.

Pompeii actully people turned to stone due to the huge eruption there are dead bodies ya dont know that

You're close. The people were buried in ash and pumice which hardened around their bodies. The ash left a cavity where their bodies were, and the archeologists poured plaster into those cavities. All the "stone" people you see in Pompeii today are plaster casts of real people (and dogs) that died in the eruption.

Love the video but one comment, not so much. Only an American would say “not stroller friendly” why is it that Americans can’t accept that everything doesn’t have to be perfect.

We never expect anything to be perfect, especially when traveling. Our videos help other people plan their trips, so when we saw another family struggling with their stroller, we felt compelled to advise all the families with young children that might watch this video while preparing for their own trip to Pompeii to not bring a stroller, but opt for a carrier like we did. It was meant to be a helpful tip, not a disparaging comment about Pompeii.
