The gun is overrated in modern combat and can't really penetrate modern battle tanks, but it can wreck softer targets. It is not "awful," however, it is a cost effective weapons platform for CAS.

The official name for the A-10 is the Thunderbolt II, but it has earned the nickname "Warthog" from USAF pilots and crews This nickname for Republic-Fairchild jets dates back to 1949 with the Republic F-84 Thunderjet which was nicknamed "Hog". The subsequent F-84F Thunderstreak was nicknamed the "Super Hog" and the F-105 Thunderchief (the infamous "Thud" of the Vietnam War) was given the nickname "Ultra Hog".

Also, the guns are only used in anti-insurgency role as any decent military force will have some effective tanks which the A-10 can no longer reliably penetrate and a few forms of surface to air missiles, which will eat A-10's for lunch, so in a conventional war it's mostly relegated to being a AGM-65 Maverick truck.

It was the job of SEAD and other multirole planes such as F-111 Raven, F/A-18 Hornet, and etc that suppressing Iraqis AA network hard enough that they couldnt retaliate properly which allowed A-10s to be brought in the first place.

Fun fact: with how long Pomu fired the one burst we got to see, if it were a real A10 she would have crashed because there is so much recoil on the main gun that the aircraft would fall out of the sky due to lack of lift.

The GAU-8 generates slightly more recoil than the thrust of a single of it's turbofan engines. It's capable of flying with a single engine, and it was already at speed and some altitude. Gaining altitude would be hard, but it'd definitely be able to maintain or slowly lose altitude for more than a few minutes.

The A-10 turned 50 last year, and they're looking like they'll be in service until at least 2035. That's a hell of a run, especially considering how many times people have tried to replace it and failed. Granted, the USAF wants to keep the B-52 in service for a full century (they're currently replacing the engines on the fleet).

I think that just speaks more about how much power congress has over the military. The ones to move to decommission the A-10 is the airforce they don't want the A-10 because they know it sucks at its job. Congress has been keeping it in service because they aren't interested in preformance. They just see how cheap it is. It's not impressive its concerning that the plane people are telling congress that it is bad and can't be used in a modern war. And are being told they have to use it.

There is absolutely no reason to replace them with a much more expensive plane when a military force to contest them hasn't even materialized. Even Russia's military, the second-best funded military in world, lags behind the US severely. There's a reason why there are so many "blowing up a $6 tent in the desert with $300,000 taxpayer dollars" memes and it's because of people like the ones who want to replace the A-10 (read: defense contractor lobbyists who are sad that they aren't selling more new crap to the government)

@@CrizzyEyes thats a fine argument. I will admit I forget the fighter mafia still exists in some form and pushed everything to the fault of congress. However the A-10 only functions in an air superiority environment that has no anti-air capabilities. That is at this point exclusively insurgents. This aircraft has been shot down by air systems that were thought to be outdated and had to operate at air altitudes higher than it was supposed to to avoid being shot down leading to worse preformance. Its not that the A-10 is a capable aircraft that cuts costs. It had a small niche to be more cost effective for terrorists, and that has ended now that we have decided that the war on terror was ineffective and pulled out. Other than that it is out performed by the f-35 and spending money on an outdated aircraft to keep it operational for a single niche is just as a drain when there is better use of funding.

Fun facts about the A-10 Warthog (Thunderbolt II): The GAU-8 30mm Avenger is the main weapons platform of the A-10 that takes up 1/3rd of the entire plane. The size of the Avenger ammunition compartment is about the size of a Volkswagen Beetle while the entire gun pieced together is the size of a pickup truck. The Avenger was also developed by General Electric, the same company that makes washing machines. The plane was purposely designed to make the gun fly, so in essence it's not even a plane it's a flying democracy dealer. Because of the fact the GAU-8 is so god damn massive the actual plane itself had to be built around the gun. The 30mm rounds are bigger than beer bottles. The "Brrrt" we hear after the loud cracks and poppings is the sound of the gun reaching the observers ears moments after the rounds had reached its target hence the saying "If you hear the gun, then you weren't the target." The USAF wanted to get rid of the Warthog because they're idiots and don't realize how effective it is at its job. It's so slow a P-51 Mustang from WWII can outrun it. The Warthog is such a tank it is said it can lose an engine and a wing and still fly.

@@chaosknight9131 the problem of the A-10 is that we all think of it as a gun that pops tanks while it cannot really do well. Its guided missiles were the ones destroying tanks. And it got outshined by multirole fighters like the F-15 in the gulf war in its own role: close air support. Sure it’s beautiful to see an A-10 strife. But it’s more secure to perform CAS in a multirole fighter as they can do it while still being at a higher altitude and can still perform air superiority depending on the load out. In the first video, the pig talked about a live fire test in 1979 where the A-10 had optimal conditions for the gun and did 10 strifes against 10 M48 targets in an arrow formation. Only 8 were touched, 3 were immobilised, 3 were destroyed. If it were T-72s, the A-10 might not have popped one and an AA tank behind would shoot it.

Fun fact: the A-10 was designed primarily to fit the GAU-8 Autocannon. They were so successful in this aspect that the A-10 can't fly effectively without the gun. Attempts to replace the gun with weights to make a gunless version weren't successful due to the fact that now the planes can't fly effectively
