Hopefully Pinocchio and Fantasia will be shown in theaters again for their 100 anniversary and while we’re at it Fantasia 2000 (I know it technically premiered in 1999 but it’s wide release was in 2000) and The Emperor’s New Groove need to be shown again for their 40th. Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 could be shown as a double feature I mean combining the two is still shorter than the 3rd LOTR film and the extended versions of the trilogy. If people can watch those in one sitting people can definitely see this

I love what a flirty little temptress the main hippo is. She's so clearly utterly convinced of her own irresistible-ness. Then again; the main 'gator seems to be super into it, so maybe she's right. You go girl. As a kid, though, there was this weird charge to this whole segment that gave me confused feelings. To this day I don't know is the 'gators are taking all of the women to eat them or ravish them. Hopefully not both. 'Gators: they're here for your women...

For those wondering the meaning behind this dance: Walt Disney created this as a parody of overly dramatic and horribly-acted operas. Disney never saw the appeal in making a play whose sole purpose was to make you feel depressed instead of sending a message or providing satire. This piece of Fantasia contrasts as a funny, light-hearted dance in comparison to the heavier and more serious songs to show that even the most serious of cases can take an easier turn in life. Gators and Hippos are natural enemies in the wild, but here they're running around, falling in love, and dancing with each other.
@russellbowes99736 жыл бұрын
Erm....... its a parody of ballet, not opera. Granted, the music itself comes from an opera, but within the opera it accompanies a ballet sequence
@DreamDancer826 жыл бұрын

@lhadzyan73006 жыл бұрын
the music is a ballet contained in a very dramatic and tragic yet beautifull opera indeed (La Gioconda from Ponchielli) however at the heigh middle of the story happens a parenthesis in the play to set up a ballet "the Dance of the Hours" which has an a story in his own way, which has both lyric and dramatic moments and everything ends well contrasting with the opera main story. Perhaps Disney only got the whole opera as reference, and didn´t thought about the ballet itself, although there is a lot of references from the play at the ballet at this animation as it happens to be the five momments of the play: the Dawn Hours (the ostriches), the Day/Midday Hours (the hippos, although their music is part of the music already used on the ostriches yet in an amusing arrangement), the Dusk Hours (the elephants) and the Night Hours (the crocodiles), where it also happens a love story between the two leading dancers (Hyacint Hippo and Ben Ali-Gator) and a frantic ending with all the dancers. The same things happen in ballet just not as amusing as here.

The allegator and hippo are commonly used as symbols of the Leviathan and the Behemoth, mentioned from the bible, and they had often been put together usually to allude to harbingers of the apocalypse, no doubt a concept derived from Talmud writings. Not sure if that was Walt Disney's intention for making them Allegators and Hippos, but that's usually been the case with putting together these two creatures. Would not surprise me if it was part of his intention though, what with all the Freemason/OTO big wigs around. Those guys literally jerk off to apocalyptic scenarios and reference, which is not surprising that these same kind of people tend to be really into "population control".

Some of the animators who worked on this segment (such as Preston Blair and Ray Patterson) would later leave Disney for the MGM cartoon studio and work on many Tom and Jerry and Tex Avery cartoons. I can definitely see the sensibilities of those toons in some of the more slapsticky moments here.

It was made in 1940 and the majority of people who went to see movies were adults. They tended to put everything into boxes (classical music in one box, theater in another, movies in a 3rd) and didn't like anything that was considered "out of the box thinking." Fantasia was too different for that time. If it had been released about 10 years later they would've gotten more kids in the audience and had more success. Kids' imaginations are more abstract and therefore enjoy stuff like hippos dancing ballet
