Man I loved Bonanza when I was a kid and still do today . Should of never tore down the house , could of been used as a center piece to a nice park are something . The show meant a lot to a lot of people , still does .

I was unaware that it no longer exists! I visited there in the late 70's and was inside the ranch house. Why in the world would they tear down such an iconic site!?

I've got some updated info about the ranch house... indeed, it was dismantled and is no longer on site. However, it is all saved and in storage, to be rebuilt at another location, yet to be determined. The organization in charge, the Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society, tells me that the local Tahoe regulatory agencies won't allow it to be rebuilt in the Tahoe basin, so where the house ends up is anybody's guess. I'll try to post an update here if/when I hear one!

This ranch at Incline VIllage was not the only Ponderosa Ranch House because Lorne Greene built a replica with modern conveniences for himself in Mesa, Arizona. It has been designated a historic landmark and so it's going to be around for a long time. It's located at 602 S Edgewater Drive in Mesa, Arizona. There's even a KZbin video of it.

My kids and I got to go there while it was still around. They were all pretty little so we went early, had the pancake cookout breakfast and enjoyed the park before it got too hot, (Incline Village gets toasty in August). Lots of fun and interesting too. Too bad it's gone.

Yes. It's in a town called Lake Incline, NV which is near Virginia City. It's on land that actually was part of the Ponderosa in the famous map from the TV show.

Believe it or not, there were no rooms upstairs at the real ranch house. The stairs led to nowhere. Poor planning on Adam's part I guess. They actually shot all the upstair shots at a studio.

There is a shot of Little Joe in a bar room fight, he flies through the swinging doors and lands on his back. That was filmed in the rain at night, then spliced. Sometimes they show Mt Davidson in the background. That looks like a backdrop picture. Hollywood magic.

From what I understood, most of the ranch scenes seemed to be shot indoors on a soundstage mock-up in a studio at Paramount. You can tell the difference between indoor and outdoor scenes by the reverbation and ambiance of the sound as well as lighting. Outdoor and indoor sequences have entirely different sound and lighting characteristics.

It's supposedly all still there. You can find it on Google Earth. While their "official" web site says there are currently no plans to reopen the site, the Washo Co. NV planning board lists an expanded theme park with a themed resort hotel as part of its development goals. You can find a link to the map by searching "Ponderosa Ranch" on Wiki.

So they mix and match outdoor with indoor sequences. Yes, I've noticed that in many other series of the day. You may find this interesting: I was watching The Brady Bunch not too long ago. It was the episode where they're on vacation out west and happen upon a ghost town. It looked like the same street scene of Virginia City as seen in Bonanza, with the jagged mountain peak backdrop. I may be wrong but I'd like to review that episode again to make sure. Could be a movie ranch? Not sure.

Most of the exteriors were shot in Chatsworth and Canyon Country on what were then Iverson ranch in chatsworth and im not sure of the others name. Iverson sold to various developers in the mid 60-s and 70's so that the 118 fwy could be put in. The other sections are now condos, which are visible from the fwy, and the other side in now large multimillion dollar homes; which are partially visible. The opening sequence of the Cartwrights on horses in front of Lake Tahoe is the only real 'Bonanza' filming done in the Lake Tahoe area.
