Well playing a defensive style doesn't mean never being offensive, it means waiting for the greatest chance to attack such that you can win the point. There's a big difference between classic and modern defence.

He actually started winning because Mikka stopped playing backspin to his backhand. Emil got pretty good at chopping loops with his backhand but lost every single point (6 times) when Mikka pushed to his back hand

@JOHN-vs1vo6 ай бұрын
This video was exactly what I needed to watch. I've been playing table tennis for about four years, but not regularly. I used to have an aggressive playstyle and even played in city tournaments. But since starting college, I haven't been able to play as much. I hadn't played for a whole year. Last month, during our semester break, my old high school teammates invited me to play again. My playstyle changed; I was playing passively, just pushing and slicing the ball close to the table. I used to do flicks and forehand or backhand shots, but it felt like I forgot how. I thought it was just because I hadn't played in a while and needed to warm up. After 4-5 days, I realized my aggressive plays weren't coming back. None of my shots were landing on the table, whether they were soft or hard strikes. Even my old coach noticed and said my playstyle had become more passive. A week has passed, and I stumbled upon this video. For context, I had been watching Pongfinity almost every day back then, but I never really got interested in this one until now. Seeing Emil try a new playstyle amazed me. His confidence as well. It got me thinking, what if I try the same thing? If I enjoy it, I'll pursue it; if it doesn't work, I'll work hard on it. Though my old aggressive plays won't disappear, I just needed something new. I'm starting next week to adopt this new playstyle, and I'm hoping to enjoy it. Thanks to Emil and to Pongfinity for this video.

I did the same as you but am four years in now. In my experience there are three important things to learn, most important is as you said pushing. Step two is then to be able to vary between chopping against heavy topspin and no spin balls whilst maintaining a good distance to the table. The third step is then to keep the ball low(ish) and be able to place it intentionally. From the few clips in the video I'd recommend stick to steps one (the technique as you mentioned) and two (stand closer to the table, try not to let it drop as far as you do) for now, the third then comes almost by its self.

my best friend (and doubles partner in my team) also plays long pimples. Started doing this two years ago, when we came out of our youth team and broke into our adult team. The first like half a season was horrible for us, we lost almost every doubles match by him pushing seemingly easy balls into the net - and one time I was quite annoyed (my bad, apologised afterwards), I said to him "thats like the 10th easy return slice you missed". In the next training session he lent me his racket and told me to practice those "easy slices". I turned very quiet after that (got almost no ball over the net). Nevertheless, we're now one of the best doubles in the league and both join a higher ranked team in the summer, so practice indeed makes perfect😉

Maybe you should use short pips, for example tsp super spin pips chop 2 1.5mm sponge. You also can chop with short pips and the pushing is like normal rubber. So you can push better and attack to. The Super Spin Pips Chop 2 is a very great rubber because you can create a lot of backspin (also at push) Try it Emil

Emil for me i am an offensive and defensive player. Do not push it all you can do is strawberry it so the ball can have heavy side and top spin. Since i've been observing the spin it is clearly that the long pimples generates a lot of spin once you know how to use it. I am a 15 year old kid who played table tennis for a splended 9 years. But take my advise don't play defensive only. Try to have a long pimples in one side and an ordinary rubber on the other side so you can add a lot more approach on the ball. If you gave up on chopping just change the rubber side so the tactics can be confusing for the opponent to play you.

If you have a problem with the return getting too high... there are some rubbers available that fixes/helpes that by delivering a lower throw angle than other LP-rubbers. But when using them you must be avare of the risk geting stuck in the net, and hateful bounces "net-and-out"... due to a way too flat line when you're chopping. In other words... there are no free lunches, you can't both keep the cockie AND eat it. That being said, all rubber are somewhat of a compromise, you can't have it all. Still, if you learn to master such a rubber (often shortpips actually...), you deliver more difficult and "hard-to-hit" strokes to the opponent. The thing is to determine which properties in the rubber you benefit the most from. If you for example have a strong backhand attack, maybe you should choose a rubber with properties that allows hitting the ball to some extent, rather than chopping on EVERY ball, in all situations.

For long pips you need to top spin push all chops. It creates a fast loop even at short distances. Then chop all loops. The long pips top spin push is very effective. Keep chopping their loops until they make a mistake then capitalize.

Super interesting, thanks guys. So I have tried doing a defensive play with normal pips-in rubbers that are actually meant for attacking and that already is a very interesting way of playing as it allows me to swap between defense and offence , though I mostly play offensively. But i think i would also like to try long pips at some point in time too, my coach uses long pips and has been training me in how to return balls played with long pips (i've always stuggled with it) but perhaps I should try playing with them. He mentioned that the thickness of the sponge in playing with long pips also makes a difference in playing, perhaps look into that as well as you progress through this year.

Very cool idea. I am looking forward to the progress he can make. But let's be honest. There is a question I just can't live without knowing the answer to it. What LP rubber and which thickness did you choose? I assume throughout your yourney you might eventually switch blades and try out different pimples but I really like to know your thoughts about LP rubbers. Since roughly 8 months ago I also "switched" to defense with LP but I still got an inverted blade and just in general seem to be unable to use the same equipment for longer then 2 weeks.
