Actually introduction of characters in the movie ps1 isn't clear that's why this confusion may be they will clarify explain nicely in ps2 ( hoping mysteries will be covered in ps2) Simply put some what close to mahabharatha Just understand the family tree (Characters n their names) The story revolves around who will be the next king ... Father decides other son Sunder chola as king ( capital tanjavur) which rightfully belonged to Madhurantaka. Sunder cholas son Aditya karikalan( heir prince) to be the king and now elder brother's son madhuranthaka wants to be the king and upset . Sunder chola has 3 kids adityakarikalan ( Vikram) heir prince . Kundavai( trisha) arun mozhi varman ( jayam ravi) who is in Lanka in ps1..ponniyan selvan. Karti( vanthiyathevan) trusted aide of Vikram ( adityakarikalan) was sent to know about the Phazuvettaryar brothers n who else are in favour of madhuranthaka as Aditya karikalan's spy.
