Great to see how good Lambo is working. He's not bothered and that's a testament to how you've done some great work with him. The mare is one of those horses who takes a long time to trust the human. Gotta be super careful because she has a strong fight instinct and you sure don't want that to get fully exposed. I think once she comes around and let's down fully you'll have a solid horse. Just one of those that's not easy or a snap to train. Thanks for putting these sessions out there for us to enjoy!

Thank you for sharing this process 👍 Many years ago I had an ASH mare so like this girl in attitude. She was started by "traditional" methods at 5yr old. And I was a green (but determined) rider. This knowledge would've been gold to young me, and it sure is now! That little horse @ 14.2h, taught me everything on steroids! Even in a crisis she retained perfect light control, but poor mare was close to crisis often due to me, my lack of understanding, unreal expectations and lack of community back in the day. Did I say thank you? 👍🌻

@@libbydormouse318 errrrrr most herd animals are matriarch led. Deer elephants horses etc etc. it’s easier to shoot a stag than a hind for very obvious reasons. The females are ultra switched on. This mare is defensive but willing to boss. She will be amazing once she’s on side with her human.
@fuzzininja981520 күн бұрын
@@red80808 ? I mean they do lead the herd? Most of the time Stallions are the protectors and watchers but the lead mare decides when and where to eat and drink and deals with herd hierarchy disputes. Although horse dynamics seem to be very flexible and complicated so this isn’t always the exact scenario.

I feel sorry for Lambo having to deal with her. Where's your older horses you ride? He is a good boy. If you noticed which I'm sure you did, the mare is always wringing her tail but he is not. You have definitely convinced me to never get a mustang. Had a friend that had one she trained but he was dangerous around other people and she had to get rid of him because he was just not trustworthy around anyone but her. Good luck with this one Ryan I think she's gonna take a while longer. Stay safe guys.
@jimmyyounger61821 күн бұрын
This isn't exclusively a mustang issue. I got my cow bred AQHA gelding as a coming 2 year old and never thought I'd have any such worry with him. Within weeks he decided he was herd boss and then challenged me a couple of times, approaching high headed with ears penned. The fix for that was some old school, rigorous workouts in the round pen. (This old school practice would certainly put me in the dog house with modern trainers, but arguments against things that have worked for me and perhaps saved a horse make me smirk.😋) From that point on, he was always as gentle as an old dog with me, but uncannily possessive and protective around others. It's an inconvenient character flaw, but because of the way he is with me I could never part with him. He's retired now and we're going on 25 years of memories.

First, Lambo is an absolute legend! I felt like Marley was a perfect example of "horses are going to horse." I have no doubt that this extremely intelligent survivor has had a long history of bossing other horses around- maybe even foals. How dare this young GELDING try to make her yield space? It was handled so beautifully, but I'm not at all surprised about her level of defensiveness being much greater with another horse vs a human. She's been controlling other horses with little more than eye contact and subtle body language, and when it didn't work, she went bigger. Really nice to see her let down and relax. Fantastic work.

Progesterone, progesterone + estradiol, or oxytocin are hormonal options to control heat cycles. I’d rather use supplements to calm the mood and any tenderness but things like vervain are prohibited by the FEI. I don’t use hormonal options myself, but I’m just an AA who does lower-level dressage. I likely would if I were competing at higher levels.

I would have had her with another horse after 7 days.

My horse bit me for the first time this week. She has never showed any aggressive behavior towards me since I have owned her, (around a year), I mean never pinned her ears at me even, not for any reason. I was going to clean her udders (which I do pretty regularly, she enjoys being rubbed here normally), I just barely touched them and she whipped around and got me right on the butt, It turned black and blue by the end of the day I haven't been able to sit right all week. I was in so much shock that it happened, I think my feelings were more hurt than my butt, she hasn't been 100% herself lately after an allergic reaction which resulted in some edema on her belly, I have been doing light body work to work the fluid out and I can tell it is uncomfortable for her so I limit the sessions to keep her as comfortable as possible. She is not outright aggressive when I do this just swishes her tail and occasionally moves away and I can tell by her face it is not fun for her. She has been on the mend overall but that one instance really knocked down my trust for her with my back turned, and was honestly quite a confidence knock. Has anyone experienced something similar? How did you recover from this with your horse? I did not correct her when she bit me because I took it as a pain response, I did move her away when it happened but it had to have been 10 seconds or so after, I was in a lot of pain. she left for about 30 seconds then came back wanting attention and seemed to be saying "sorry".
