They're not low maintenance period. Especially Standard and Medium who are hunting dogs and risk getting quite grumpy and easily annoyed if they don't get any type of work or activity to do

They are as friendly as the owner raises them to be. My experience with the toy variety was of him being extremely jealous, territorial and baiting bigger dogs into getting bitten by that poodle. He lost an eye playing that game, too, to an afgan dog (the thin ones).

​@@mollysimmons2960Unless you want that ornate cut, it's not hard to give an all-over "puppy cut," I think it's called. The little guy HATED the groomers. I think he thought their choke collar was trying to kill him. He used to STOMP around the house for two weeks afterward. My miniature poodle (normally 22#, but expanded to 33# once when feasting on a deer with the two neighbor dogs one winter -- bow hunter had hit it, then couldn't find it) used to luxuriate in my lap while I trimmed him. It was great therapy for me, too.

Our first dog was our toy poodle, Ruby. She wasn’t the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but once she learned something she never forgot. She was also a total sweetheart who would rather sit on your lap then anything else. The only issues we had with her were her nervous barking and, down the line, her dementia. I wasn’t super close to her, but I still miss her.

If you mix breeds sometimes you can get something unpleasant, naturally speaking, specially if the breed mix is between a big and small dog, it can kill the dog if the female is a small one. So this thing prevent them to go through these situations. Also, demands the owner to be careful towards this matter, castrating or just not letting the dog breed with another bigger one. It is not one colour or other, there are many issues when it comes to breed and mixing

Everything is true except for the “low maintenance” part. They require daily coat grooming. And teeth brushing daily is also a must. Still wouldn’t trade them for the world.

Oh my. I'd love a standard but thats a lot to groom and dental hygiene everyday. Are they good with being alone for long hrs? I work 12hr shifts three days a week and worry about leaving any dog alone in my house for lond periods of time.

If you do, make sure not to get them together or they will get littermate sindrome which is when they are closer to each oter than they are to you. Sorry for the long comment lol.

No, they are high maintenance but if you don’t let the hair grow too long, it’s better to buy a blower and blow through the coat once a week than brush every day - especially don’t dry brush please.

Not low maintenance! Don’t shed hair but You must brush them at least every second day thoroughly all the way to the skin, and make sure you get all matting out, especially ears and tail, or you will have to shave the hair off to remove matts. I take my girl to groomers every 2 weeks for the full trim and fluff up. I keep her body very short to help with grooming and hygiene as she sleeps in my bed. I bath her in between salon visits, and keep a slicker brush next to the couch for cuddle time brushing. Otherwise they are soft and beautiful and the most fantastic friend you’ll ever have. 🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩

Literally all poodles are just small humans that are done with life. I have a parti poodle small dog kinda but holy crap is he lazy. Anytime there’s a DROP of rain he runs to my room and jumps on my bed and shakes and I have to put a blanket around him. He hates the water and will never go out to potty when it’s raining. If there’s thunder he runs under the bed same with fireworks. These dogs are not low maintenance lol but I love him to death. I’d do anything for him.

They're also one of the smartest dog breeds, almost as much as sheepdogs are. I remember my cocker spaniel-poodle mix that I had growing up used to immediately wake up my parents whenever I had caught a stomach bug or a cold/flu as a kid. Even when he was only part-poodle, he still inherited a lot of elements from the breed.

I am not a dog owner(yet) but everyone I've met that has a poodle said their grooming was pretty high maintenance. Also should be noted that intelligent dogs need lots of mental stimulation or they turn that intelligence to mischief and destructive behavior. I used to have a coworker who had a miniature poodle named Shantee that would come with the coworker's daughter when she came to pick my coworker up after work. According to the daughter, Shantee would look for me while they were waiting for my coworker. One of my favorite memories of little Shantee was her putting her front paws on my shoulders like she was trying to give me a hug.

Every dog requires some maintenance and proper training, but in my opinion, after having a dogs my entire life ( never a poodle actually) they are the most underrated breed. They are second most intelligent, they don’t shed, they can be friendly as Labrador or golden retriever, but unlike those two breeds, poodle will actually protect you and even risk their lives for you. They are very fun and loving, quite happy to sit on the couch but also happy to go for a jogging with you.

When I was a year old, my Dad brought home a poodle to keep me company while both he and my Mom went to work. For all intents and purposes, my Pepe was my best friend and kid brother until I was 21 years old. I can attest to their intelligence and affection. It's well worth the time and money spent at the groomer every 6 weeks!

I had my first poodle a year ago and she’s not low maintenance at all! In fact, it was impossible to teach her to stay alone and I have a pool of nannies now to come over when I’m gone or to drop her off at, and it must be someone she has known a long time otherwise she gets anxious, she’s a velcro dog, something I didn’t have to deal with my labrador who was very chill. She has to be brushed everyday too because she gets matted very quickly and she is EXTREMELY sociable and craves attention everywhere we go. Because she is so smart her obedience training is also all over the place: she is obedient up until the moment she gets her treat, than she’s back to her business 😅 that said, she’s very adaptable (if you’re resting, she will rest with you, if you’re doing some activity, she will participate with you) and she is very very entertaining and lovable. Also she BARKS. A lot. To every sound outside of the apartment so you better get yourself a quiet place.

I have and always had poodles and they are not low maintenance. The hair needs a lot care, needs to be brushed, cut and cleaned. Their hair may be (I don't think is true tbf) hypoallergenic but if you don't clean it will be stuffed wtih dust and pollen which will be the doom of allergic people.

Low maintenance? My Dad bought a set of dog clippers, and learned how to keep our sweet miniature looking handsome, and thus saving time and money of taking him to a groomer. He was very smart and a quick learner. Mama eadily taught him to wait patiently until she told him it was okay to eat his food, and to wipe his feet when he came in from outside. Sweet boy. I still miss him.

It is not the dog's hair we're allergic to, it's their skin type that we are allergic to. My step-dad learned this over 10 years ago when he was part of a study for allergy shots. Of course, the skin is on the end of the hair when they shed, so in a way you could say that it's the hair we're allergic to. But it's really their skin, same with cats and all of the other type of animals with fur that we're allergic to 😊

The poodle breed has been my personal choice of dogs. I was given my first apricot poodle at age 13. I owned 5 and my beautiful red mini poodle Scarlett is is beside me as I text this. She is 131/2 years old and everyday is a blessing to have her. Needless to say that I know that time will come. I will be devastated. Yes, brushing and grooming are required but people should never get a pet without checking the pros and cons. Rather pay for grooming which can be expensive depending on where you go, non shedding is my preference over hair everywhere.

I've had several poodles only one died from old age and his name was Impy he was also deaf and had lost all his little teefy's. The other ones died from cancer, one at 5 yrs old and my sweet baby Tobie at 15 yrs old. Some people hate on poodles and say they look like rats but there is a legitimate real reason they make so many poodle mix breeds. It’s because they’re such a great breed people like to introduce poodle traits into their puppies. I had a little yorkie poo growing up and she was so adorable and such a great dog for a little girl. Poodles are the second smartest dog breed too so they’re very clever so they’re easy to train. My little yorkie poo was smarter then most large dogs I see.
