But it sucks. The better, professional players option is to bank the 8 with follow so if you DO miss the 8 "trying" to go 3 rails at least your opponent can't make his ball as easy as in his example. If I played him and he missed I'd have position and win instant. That's not thinking of your opponent and actual game play .

I've been in thousands of tournaments and rarely anyone lets you use the 8 ball as neutral so this wouldn't be much help.

You should bank off the corner of the pocket and carom off the back of the 5 ball. Use a medium stroke with right English so the cue stays by the head rail and the 5 goes down table, if you miss.

The correct shot here would be one that both attempted to make the eight ball and put it behind the five ball (in or out of the pocket) but also brought the cue ball up table to the top right corner as we see it. Shoot it with right hand English trying to hit the outer edge of the pocket to get it to cut behind the five and drop in. If it doesn't, it'll be in your opponent's way and the cue ball by using right hand English and a little bit of energy will go all the way up table off two rails and back towards that right hand corner pocket. Not leaving them an easy shot on the five if any.

It doesn't take 5 days to learn the 4 rail bank shot. My captain taught me how to do it in 4 shots. It's not that hard to make one you learn where to aim the first bank which is right at the first diamond.

You could practice this situation but it doesn't come up much. A safety shot leaving the 8 in front is easier. Just remember you have to hit a rail for the shot to be legal.

A pro would play a ONE rail bank shot into the upper right pocket as we see it. Draw the cue ball, to avoid double kiss. Efren Reyes might play your shot, but all other pros wouldn't. I guarantee it.
