Hi Chris, I would love it if you went into this subject a little further. You showed us the natural roll of the ball with top spin but what if it had bottom spin? You showed the shot into the corner and side pocket but there is one shot that everyone I know has trouble with, and that’s when your object ball is on the center shot at the end of the table and your cue ball is in the center of the table at the other end. If you put your object ball in the corner pocket, your cue ball will scratch in the other pocket. What’s the best way to avoid the scratch on that shot? Many will do a bank shot to avoid the scratch on that same shot, however, if you miss then you will usually leave a good shot in the corner for your opponent. How do I avoid this?

Great video, best explanation of the tangent line i've seen. I've heard numerous people say the tangent line is the line "from the center of the ghost ball perpendicular to the object ball", but no one ever say the line is at "a 90 degree angle from the path of the object ball." So much easier to see a line of the path of a ball then try to find the center of a ghost ball. It just clicked after watching this. So, thank you! Question.. would the routine be, when lining up for a cut shot, to visualize the tangent line, determine if that is a good path, whether it be to not scratch or to get position, then play top or bottom English to adjust that path if need be? And is it possible for the cue ball to be sliding more than one foot? Such as the length of a table, or would you just on some shots plan for the cue ball to be rolling forward which would adjust the tangent line forward? Sorry for the long question / comment, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

xlxcrossxlx if u play backspin on a cue ball 🎾 on a long distance object ball 🎱, by the time the cue ball reaches the object ball it loses all the backspin n then slides for moment n starts rolling forward naturally. So just by controlling the amount of backspin on the cue ball, u can make it hit the object ball at sliding speed or rolling speed.
@jessieshores48655 жыл бұрын
There is a reason the ghost ball is used to explain this, as the latter explanation leads to poor aiming. It is important that you know both the angle the ball will travel AND where the ball is starting from. As a ball traveling the same angle from two different starting points will get very different results. If someone aims their position play with the right angle, but measures that angle from the location of the object ball INSTEAD of from the position the cue ball will be in at contact (ghost ball) they will be off a large margin. It's a game of inches after all, so it is imperative to not only understand tangents, but to apply them from the origin of the ghost ball. As for the question. That's a complicated one. If you strike an object ball with a cue ball that has spin on it, it will indeed affect the trajectory. That said, the amount of spin(how high or low you strike the cue), distance, and speed of the shot are big variables. The friction of the cloth will deteriorate the spin as it travels. For greater distances you can increase some combination of speed or spin to compensate for this. You can make the ball not slide at all, with very slow high top spin shots, or you could make it slide the full length of a 12 foot table with high speed high bottom spin shots. If you want to perfectly follow the tangent line your cue ball must be sliding when it strikes the object. That said, the same way that the follow on a straight shot from a center hit is not that much, cutting an object ball with a ball that is rolling naturally forward wont throw you off much. In my experience what you should do is change your thinking. Instead of thinking of stop as the middle, and spin as the two extremes, think of a running cue ball(center hit) as the baseline. Learn how your ball moves without manipulation. Once you can see that it becomes a great deal easier to determine how to alter it's path. Get a measles ball or practice with a stripe ball so you can see the spin, and practice straight in stop shots at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 feet. You can practice altering the speed of the shot first, and then try doing the same drill with similar speeds, but altering how low you hit the ball. Then combine them. This will really help with understanding how those two variables affect slide, and the measle/stripe will let you see the transition from backspin to natural roll. Gluck :)

So is that irrespective of the angle? Wouldn't the "amount" of contact affect the tangent line?
@LilChrisPoolPlayer4 жыл бұрын
Only if the cue ball is sliding, rolling forward, or rolling backwards is the tangent line affected. The amount of contact does not affect the tangent line.

A rolling cue ball does not have to slide first as it takes the path of least resistance. Striking the cue ball roughly 2/5ths above center creates a rolling ball from the get go. No real offence to the author his geometry is off. On the corner demo while he believes he is striking the middle he is not striking through the middle plane but below on the opposite side creating back spin and false natural 90° angle as he did not take into consideration his approach angle was not 180°.
@theoldgreenbaizecom-fd2zp5 жыл бұрын
A stun shot (or one sliding because its hit with pace) will always go off at 90 degrees a (L) shape - white and OB (but it depends how you hit when hit it with no bottom top or side (or English) )and roughly 30 degrees when hit softly in the rolling shot as you say which a (V) shape kind of contact its a rough guide. It is basic geometry that can help you with the positional aspect. I never really thought about this before in this way I just did it but yep breaking it down you are correct. Again - well explained and demonstrated.

Great video Chris! Thanks very much, as I have said before, I use your videos for instruction for teammate coaching - one thing I would like to add, the reason it is hard to see, is that draw/follow spin effects take VERY little time to affect the cue ball. Most dissipate very soon after contact, so it is useful when teaching to treat them as near point effects. for instance, the shot you demonstrated about the side pocket hit after the incomplete skid shot, the ball appears to travel in a straight line, so it can be difficult for inexperienced players to grasp. You show an exaggerated line, good demonstration of the effect, but if you watch the video, the actual line is very different.

So, if the cue ball strikes the object ball while sliding, it comes off at a 90 degree angle. But if the cue ball strikes the object ball while rolling forward, the cue ball will come off at a sharper angle like 80 degrees?

I have to ask, what about table conditions? Does this "rule" still apply? I played in a league where one team (all the officers and the best players) always used Pledge furniture polish on the table before league play. It cleaned the table and made it super fast.
@LilChrisPoolPlayer4 жыл бұрын
I specifically said that, “On average, depending on the conditions of the table, the cue ball will slide about a foot” I imagine that this is only slightly altered by table conditions. Slicker conditions, like you describe will most likely allow the cue ball to slide a little farther than a foot before it starts rolling. Rougher conditions, will probably allow the cue ball to slide a little less. This would all be because of friction between the cue ball and the table. Hope that helps!

@shader264 жыл бұрын
Great info here! Makes me wonder though, is the same thing happening on the object ball when the cue ball hits it? Is the object ball sliding at first, then rolling in the same rotation the cue ball was (and not opposite as it would if it were gears) I think it must be because otherwise the normal rotation would make the object spin opposite, but that doesn’t happen. Also am wondering what the range (soft hit = 6” or less slide? Hard hit maybe 1.5’ ?
@LilChrisPoolPlayer4 жыл бұрын
The object ball will only slide briefly if the cue ball slides into it. If the cue ball is spinning in any way as contact is made, then then opposite spin is thrown onto the object ball.

In Australia most white balls are slightly smaller than the object balls. Does this change the natural roll?
@LilChrisPoolPlayer5 жыл бұрын
From the cue ball alone, no the natural roll doesn't really change. Since it's smaller, it might weigh less that what we use in America and it may or may not slide a little farther before rolling. For the most part, the natural should still be the same.

Great video, Lil' Chris! You left me confused also. Why would a cue ball stop when hitting an object ball far from it and at the mouth of a pocket? I strike the cue ball hard in the middle to avoid scratching. Or perhaps I actually do something else and don't know it.
@LilChrisPoolPlayer5 жыл бұрын
If there is distance between the cue ball and object (over a foot), and the cue ball stops on contact, then chances are you actually struck the cue ball below center. This causes the cue ball to spin backwards and before the cue ball contacts the object ball, the back spin dies out and the cue ball slides into the object ball causing it to stop on contact.

This isn't too bad for someone newer to the game. Basically start to understand what's going on. The theory is roughly correct, but you hit your example shots at different paces. The 1 foot thing can't be any kind of useful value because it's completely dependent on pace, it could be a couple inches if you hit it really soft or an entire table length if you slam the cue ball.
