My grand-dad had an old 1-gal bucket he kept a brush and oil rag in. Every time we finished for the day, and brought the farm tools back to the barn, we brushed all the dirt off them, then wiped them down with the rag. Next time we used the tools, they'd always be nice and clean. One day I showed my kids how this worked by making them make a mess in their room before they went to bed. Waking up and not being able to find anything really made an impression on them. Especially when they DID find something, and discovered it was dirty (with a little help from an 'elf' who snuck in while they were asleep!). Love keeping up this tradition!

one tip that i was taught many years ago - when using wood saws - to have a candle handy and to rub it along each edge - as it acts like a lubricant - keeping the cut smooth.

It's little things like the saturated balistiol rag in a tight tin that that most people now a days are completely unaware of, as far as stretching out your money and minimizing waste goes. I am pretty sure the companies that make things like balistiol would be pleased if everyone just wasted it and kept buying the stuff, but overall, it is better for you and me if we consume slowly and frugally. It's better in a few ways that also ends up helping the environment too, even though I am by no means a tree hugger. Just thought I'd throw that out there. I remember older people doing things like the rag in a tin from when I was a kid in the 70's, so it it nice to see you spread this idea.

You know I had a tin with a rag in it from my Grandfathers tools soaked in what I thought was perhaps 3 in 1 oil judging by the odour... I didn't give it much thought at the time but now I realise that I was a fool to throw it away... Not to worry, it's something I'll have to start again but I'll pass the knowledge on more carefully ... Thanks Cody ... You gave me a nugget about my Grandfathers common sense approach to things I had missed completely.. what a gift :o)

I watched Paul's videos of him making this bench, I like the bench so much that I'm watching your's now. I found out about you through the comments people were making on his videos. I just started traditional woodworking and I'm loving it! I'm going to be building a bench soon, can't wait to see your finished product! What types of vices are you going to equip the bench with? Please include the installation process, because I'm still not sure how the installation process goes. Thanks!

Try putting an old spray bottle top on the ballistol, like from a windex bottle and you will have alot more control over the flow of the oil, you might have to cut the straw if it is to long but it works very well

Based on your enthusiasm, I ordered a small container of Balistoll. Seems their office is just across Toronto, but busfare there and back would have been not much less than postage. It just arrived, so I tried it on my Opinel knife. The blade has always been dark, I guess it's high carbon. I thought it would work gradually over the next few days, but I rubbed it on and wwiped it off, and the blade was instantly brighter! Wow. I dug out a tin of Twinings loose tea that's been sitting in one of my kitchen cupboards, so my cloth has a home.If the bottle were a little smaller, it could go inside, too, but not quite.

Regarding the leather strop, the best leather for the business is horse upper rump leather because of the fine grain and uniformity. It's what is used for traditional razors. Ballistol is indeed a magnificent oil and it has other uses.

For cutting off tendons I prefer a Japanese style saw which cuts on the pull rather than the push. I agree with the others who have said to stay away from mineral based rust preventatives and lubricants. One drop will stain or spot a finished piece and spoil the look. Thanks for the good channel. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

There's NOTHING like owning tools of the finest quality money can buy. All of my prized tools come from well-known quality brands, e.g. Estwing hammers and hatchets, Channellock pliers and cutting tools, Klein and Xcelite hand tools, Stanley chisels, ...the list goes on. Two things in common with all these brands: 1.) quality steel from the USA, UK, any of the Germanic/Nordic countries (take your pic -- they all have the finest steel), etc., and 2.) most importantly, *attention to detail*. Not just when you first pick up the tool and it just feels right in your hand, but as you use the tool *over time* -- as the tool breaks in and wears -- that's when any lack of attention to detail comes to light. One minor nit, though; I tend to prefer tang chisels than socket chisels. I tend to grip my chisels by pinching the blade between my thumb and first two fingers; never by the handle. If you've ever used a chisel in a PRECISION way -- i.e. to cut tongue-in-groove or dovetails in cabinetry -- you'll find that socket chisels are top-heavy. Tang chisels are easier to hold in this manner, because they don't have that club of steel at the top (i.e. the socket). A quick search while typing this revealed the following article, which I certainly agree with: "Socket vs Tanged Chisels - Which is Easier to Use For Fine Joinery?" toolsforworkingwood.com/store/blog/146/Socket%20vs%20Tanged%20Chisels%20-%20Which%20is%20Easier%20to%20Use%20For%20Fine%20Joinery

I read a few replies and haven't seen anybody who mentioned this... The metal can with the cover that you use is essential when storing rags saturated with petroleum distillates. They can spontaneously combust. I've never seen it but my friend owns a furniture repair store. They apply stain with a rag and he insists that they are left outside at the end of the day to dry because a rag in a pile burst in to flames and almost burned his shop down. We also have a special lidded fireproof container in the machine shop where I work for used, oily rags. It's an insurance requirement. Trust me, I'm not a "Safety Sally". This is a real danger. Closed metal container is a must for oily rags stored inside.

Wrangler, the picture of the chisels for this video have no handles,is that the way they are supposed to be? I have some of Grandpa's that just need sharpening and I wasn't sure if they needed handles. I was ready to make them on my shave horse since I don't own a lathe. They look nice the way they are and feel good in my hand, but the smaller one's could use something to hold onto.~Dolly

I have noticed that over-application of the ballistol is a problem with firearms as well. The only thing that I think might be a problem when using a cotton rag in this otherwise great recommendation is the worry of spontaneous combustion. My thought is that a synthetic microfiber cloth may be a preferable fabric to use. Any thoughts? Anyone?
@Ham68229
@Ham68229 10 жыл бұрын
In wood working, or even metal, with any type of "fluid" such stains, paints, lube, even protectants, if a rag is used, place it in a concealed container. No chance of spontaneous combustion.
@khookieman
@khookieman 10 жыл бұрын
I think the can plays a big part, in that it either stops the possibility of spontaneous combustion, or if for whatever reasons it still manages catches fire, it shouldn't be very big and contained in within the can....I think.....

Sorry this is so far in the future, but a couple episodes back Cody removed the lacquer from the chisels. The lacquer coating was meant to help prevent pitting and rusting of his tool. Why would he strip it off if it just means more maintenance?
