I had a soldering iron I bought from radio shack that had a forked graphite tip with a 9v battery. You had to bridge the tip to connect the circuit to heat up the tip element. It would get hot enough to solder. By it's nature, you had to feed solder into the joint and it works but stick to the tip. It was pretty convenient for small jobs.

You can do this as shown in the video. sort of. Connect 2 or more car batteries in series for more voltage + to -, Then using a set of jumper cables connect the positive to the carbon rod and negative to the metal. Offroaders keep some welding rods around for emergency repairs using this trick. It's actually how the first welders were made. You can parallel two more batteries for more current.

you use carbon for Air Carbon Arc Gouging, i.e. melting metal and gouging material away with aid of electricity and an air compressor. For welding a bead like in the video, you need a filler metal which the graphite rod doesn't contain. Not to mention the weld bead looks like a fairly standard stick weld with a traditional welding electrode AND there is slag which requires the electrode to contain a coating of flux which, again, the graphite rod doesn't have.

Their is a process known as carbon arc gouging. Its basically the opposite of welding, but for the purpose of welding. The carbon rod gets heated to a point it melts the fused weld essentially removing the weld with pressurized air. I guess an example of this would be welding a big expensive sheet plate to a wall then realizing your 2 inchs off, instead of scrapping the entire piece you could remove the fusion of the metals using this method, to allow least amount of damage. But at the same time its not very much used in many places except maybe welding schools just to learn it and have that knowledge. Only ever touched it maybe 10 times my entire career.

You can weld with graphite but it wont be pretty and you need filler material and a lot more power. Ive actually used graphite rods to melt metal for pouring before
@lukasbok46522 ай бұрын
I mean technically there is a type of welding that uses a graphite electrode. It works a lot like TIG welding, which means that the electrode doesn't add material to the weld. It's just a source of heat. The added material needs to be added separately.
