This isn’t even their chief means of stealing from the 99%, is macroeconomic. The moment the pandemic hit, Trump and Congress bailed out Wall Street... since then, billionaire net worth is up over 20%. Even if you don’t pay taxes, you pay for that concentration of wealth through inflation, depressed growth and the bursting of the inevitable bubble. This is the largest upwards redistribution of wealth since the last bailout. And let’s not forget that small businesses have been destroyed by our pandemic response. If I lend a share of company A from a broker, assuming there is only 1 share of A on the entire market, because I want to short it (but I don't sell it) and then I lend it to you because you want to short it, the short interest is 200% because it was "shorted" 2 times and only 1 share is available. This is possible without naked shorting. It's mind boggling how people accuse "foul play" without knowing the intricacies of the game. Is it possible that some of the shorts were naked shorted? Absolutely! Is it the only factor at play? Absolutely not! The hedge funds were complete morons for doing this and I don't defend them but accusing them of fraud when there is no evidence of wrong doing is intellectually dishonest. I remember I was told my stock portfolio should be diverse. That's why a company has different divisions and subsidiary companies to diversify itself. If one performs badly, you have others that can recoup or help handling the loss until it raises back up again. Like that one phrase, "don't put all your eggs in one basket ".

Not a meme stock anymore. GameStop sells 10% of their stock, they have 3.5 billion. They shift gears and go to remote console gaming as a service, they will reduce number of consoles needed by 94%, reduce need for downloads, and Highest quality games available instantly. The entire world could access their virtual arcade. EZ as that.

There's no evidence that the increased interest in Gamestop stock options was >95% redditors and retail investors using leverage the way some media is still presenting it. It could easily have been a trend started by them but then amplified by institutional investors who have algorithms in place to recognize trends and potential short squeezes as well as the capital to keep buying enough to keep the rise going. Gamestop may have been over-shorted, but you still need a pretty big portion of WSB to stop talking and start buying with thousands of dollars to make an impact on the stock price of a multinational corporation. People writing as "financial journalists" several days after the event you should be able to point that out. Also, the whole "short a stock that you release a paper on" thing is just as much gambling even they don't have an app with confetti. Publishing the paper is like saying "bet" in a game of poker, shorting a lot of shares is like putting a lot of chips forwards. Usually when you do a big bluff the opponent folds and the stock goes down. (I'm going to call it a bluff because it's not like these papers contain some special secret information that nobody else in the market had the ability to figure out.) Sometimes they call your bluff and you end up with what is going on now. Still, it's not even close the bigger losses hedge funds have had playing this game; in 2008 Volkswagen was the largest company in the world by market capitalization for a day or so because of a huge short squeeze.
