Thank you, sir - I love this method! I mean, the idea of reclaiming and refining precious metals with laboratory equipment and chemicals is cool. But doing it with stuff from the local hardware store, garden supply store and thrift stores is badass. This is even cooler than acid-peroxide. All you have to do is stick a chunk of IRON in the copper solution to make it crash out as copper metal.

Yes. Ive used a stainless steel spoon to recover copper from acid solution, but after a while the spoon dissolves. I guess iron is a cheaper alternative.

I think that drain opener is only 53-70% concentrated from what I've read online. I have some I'm getting ready to distill and looked it up. Still strong enough for most uses.
@ryanallen1014 Жыл бұрын
Depends on what drain opener. Around here we have 97-98% virgin concentrated sulfuric acid for $9.99 a quart. Even if you dont have that concentration and or additives in your acid you can clean it by heating you h2so4 and adding drop wise cold concentrated hydrogen peroxide. Continue heating to steaming off water until you reach the maximum concentration of 98%.

Lastly, cpu pins, kovar, I am guessing this works on that as well? Thanks my friend!

Does it have to be hot to get tge silver out?? Or how
@GeoONE5 жыл бұрын
This material will not have silver. If you are working with material that has silver, the silver will dissolve just as it would using nitric acid. To recover the silver, add a chloride such as non-iodized salt or hydrochloric acid. Or you could cement the silver out of solution as a metal using a piece of copper metal.

@@GeoONE thank u for your fast reply. Which is better using hcl or copper. With hcl dont u need to convert it? But the copper will contaminate the cemented silver a alil

I am trouble telling when its done. It is finely divided material and its hot. Some bubblez but i cant tell if its from heat or reaction
@light_yajami_68324 жыл бұрын
Did it work on the silver? And I’ll be bringing it back with copper I think that might be best, but I could be wrong! And should I leave it heating up as the copper is in. I have about 4 ounces of 925silver ???

Why do u need sulfuric if ur usng nitrate
@GeoONE6 жыл бұрын
The sodium nitrate will not decompose and release NO2 without the sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid is a catalyst. It decomposes the nitrate salt releasing nitrogen dioxide which is absorbed by the water creating nitric acid in the process. It will not work without the sulfuric acid.
@adambuysyuckyhouses6 жыл бұрын
Geo im sorry i dont understand, other ppl do it different or use different nitrate???
@adambuysyuckyhouses6 жыл бұрын
Also is heat required for a reaction
@GeoONE6 жыл бұрын
The sulfuric acid breaks the bonds between the sodium and the nitrogen releasing nitrogen dioxide. The NO2 is absorbed by the water in solution and is turned into nitric acid all in one go. Yes, heat is required for the reaction to take place.

Hi Geo so after doing this process and filtering to have just the gold coils how would we dissolve the gold. I thought Nitric acid dissolves gold. Isn't this poormans nitric acid?
@GeoONE5 жыл бұрын
Gold foils can be dissolved a couple of ways. Hydrochloric acid and chlorine bleach will dissolve gold foils and powders. Hydrochloric acid and nitric acid will dissolve gold of any type. Nitric acid alone will not dissolve gold. It must be in combination with hydrochloric acid. Aqua regia is a mixture of 3 parts hydrochloric acid and 1 part nitric acid.

@GeoONE6 жыл бұрын
Since it will dissolve silver, I would not use urea as it can form an explosive compound with dissolved silver.

Hello Geo, amazing video and explanation. I also cannot find 16-0-0 and the cost to buy it and ship it to me is just as much as buying nitric, which I have a case of but would rather not use up so fast. Would 16-0-1 work? Will that 1% potassium be an issue?

There's way easier ways toake nitric acid. Get some calcium nitrate or some other water retning nitrate salt. Then just add sodium bicarbonate, boil it down to supersaturation and let it cool down to room temperature. Collect the sodium nitrate crystals and biol it down some more to crystallize the rest. Edit: it has to be distilled with H2SO4 to get 68% nitric.

Can you use ammonium nitrite?
@GeoONE4 жыл бұрын
Short answer is, yes. But safety concerns says, no. Ammonia and dissolved precious metals do not react well together and there is a chance of creating an unstable compound.

Can this poormans nitric be Pre made and stored?
@GeoONE6 жыл бұрын
Yes, store in a cool place out of the sun lightly capped. Do not seal completely. It only reacts when there's metal that can be dissolved.
@goldentrashdk68516 жыл бұрын
Geo what would the mix ratio be?
@GeoONE6 жыл бұрын
Since I don't premix, it would be hard to say. Solid sodium nitrate equals nitric acid very closely though the needs 1.2 gram to 1 gram of nitric acid. The sulfuric acid is mixed in relation to the water used. I normally mix it 10% concentration roughly. A gallon is 3,785 ml's. A gallon of tech grade nitric acid will dissolve 2.5 pounds of copper. 2.5 pounds is 1,132 grams. It takes 3.3 ml of tech grade nitric acid to dissolve 1 gram of copper metal. 1.2 X 3.3 = 3.9 grams of sodium nitrate to dissolve 1 gram of copper metal.

in his beaker from what I can see, it is a 16:1:1 (1600 ml of tap water, 100 ml of Sulfuric, and 2x 50ml beakers of Nitrate for 100 "ml" of Nitrate to approximately 800 'ml' of material to be dissolved. Best I could guess.
