‘Jagannath’, the Hindu deity whose name translates as ‘The Lord of The Universe’, has a rich and vibrant history. Apart from Hinduism in which the Jagannath Tradition enjoys a distinct identity, Lord Jagannath is also considered as an important part of Buddhism and Jainism. According to the Vaishnava Hindus, ‘Jagannath’ or ‘Jagannatha’ is a form of Mahavishnu and also represents an Avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu alongside his elder brother, the incarnation of ‘Sheshanaga’, Lord Balabhadra (Balram) and their sister, Devi Yogamaya, known as Goddess Subhadra. As per Shaiva and Shakta sects of the ‘Sanatana Dharma’, who worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti respectively, Jagannath is the symmetry-filled tantric representation of Bhairava which shows his significance in occultism. In Buddhism, he is the symbolic representation of the Buddha in the ‘Buddha-Sangha-Dhamma’ whereas some Jains consider that ‘Jagannath’ and his rituals have been derived from Jeenanath of Jainism tradition.
